New Delhi, July 9: AAP MLA Manoj Kumar, who was arrested in connection with a case of alleged cheating and land grabbing, was today remanded to two-day police custody by a Delhi court.MANOJ

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Saurabh Pratap Singh Laler sent Kumar, MLA from Kondli in east Delhi, to police custody till July 11 after investigating agency said some recoveries were to be made from him.

The police sought seven days custody of Kumar saying he has to be interrogated and several recoveries, including documents, money and stamps, have to be made from him.

It also said that Kumar had sold a plot to the complainant for Rs six lakh in November 2012 but later, he came to know that the land did not belong to the MLA.

It argued before the court that the fake document claims Kumar to be the owner of the property and the deal was finalised at Rs 21 lakh. But the owner of the plot was one Chandrakala who has given a statement to the police saying the property was never sold to Kumar.

The police custody plea was opposed by senior advocate H S Phoolka, who appeared for Kumar, saying no notice was issued to the MLA and he had joined the investigation whenever he was called to the police station.

The counsel also argued that the FIR was lodged on May 19, 2014 and asked why the police did not arrest Kumar earlier. He also alleged that Kumar was a victim of differences between Delhi Government and Delhi Police.

"The police arrested me (Kumar) because I am an AAP MLA now. I am a victim of increasing differences between Delhi Government and Delhi Police. Why did they not arrest me earlier when I was not an MLA," the counsel argued.

He also said that no recoveries were required to be made from Kumar.

Kumar was first questioned in New Ashok Vihar Police Station in connection with the case and later arrested.

Kumar is the second law-maker of AAP to be arrested. On June 9, then Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested on charges of possessing fake degrees. He had later resigned from the Cabinet and has been in judicial custody.

Police said Kumar's was an old case relating to land fraud which was registered against him last year. A case of cheating was registered against Kumar following allegations that he duped his business partner Vinod of Rs six lakh.

Vinod had alleged in his complaint to the police that Kumar used to work as a property dealer before venturing into politics.

Vinod claimed that he was Kumar's business partner and had given Rs six lakh to him to purchase a plot in November 2012 but the property did not belong to him.

Apr 11: India has sent back 20,473 foreigners who wanted to return to their countries following the Covid-19 global pandemic, it was revealed on Friday (April 10).

"So far, we have successfully evacuated 20,473 foreign nationals as of yesterday. This is an ongoing process," said Dammu Ravi, Coordinator on Covid-19 issues at the Ministry of External Affairs, MEA.

"This involves several countries," Ravi said during the daily government briefing on Covid-19, although he could not list the countries offhand. "We are receiving excellent cooperation from governments all over the world for this process."

Many foreigners, especially tourists, were stranded in India when domestic and international flights were abruptly cancelled last month in a bid to curb transmission of the coronavirus.

The Ministry of Tourism has asked stranded foreigners to get in touch with the government through a special portal started for the purpose, through their embassies in India and other sources to facilitate their evacuation if they wished to head home.

As of Friday evening, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had confirmed 6,761 Covid-19 cases in India, of whom 515 patients have been cured.

There were 206 deaths reported from across the country.

Two states, Punjab and Orissa, have extended the ongoing lockdown until April 30.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will consult state chief ministers on Saturday to decide whether to extend the country-wide lockdown, which is due to end at midnight on April 14.

New Delhi, Jan 29: The Janata Dal (United) today expelled its vice-president Prashant Kishor and senior leader Pavan Kumar accusing them of "anti-party" activities.

Both the leaders have been attacking the party leadership over its pro-CAA stand.

The spat between Nitish Kumar and Kishor was out in the open yesterday when the former reminded the political strategist that he was inducted into the party on the recommendation of Union home minister Amit Shah.

It all began when Nitish, while talking to the media here, said, “I don’t have any problem if he (Kishor) wants to leave the party. But if he wants to stay, then he will have to follow the basic structure of the party.”

Varma had also questioned the JDU's alliance with the BJP in Delhi Assembly polls while Kishor has more than once voiced his differences with the party known on the issue of CAA and NRC.

New Delhi, Jan 7: Services at various bank branches and ATMs are likely to be affected as hundreds of employees will go on a bank strike across the country on Wednesday.

The bank strike is part of the Bharat Bandh call given by trade unions to protest against the labour reforms and economic policies of the Central government, according to reports.

The protestors' main demand during the Bharat Bandh is that the Centre should drop the proposed labour reforms.

A Bill in this regard was passed and proposes to merge 44 labour laws into four codes -- wages, industrial relations, social security, and safe working conditions.
