AB Ibrahim cautions against withdrawal of cases against Pramod Muthalik

muthalikMangaluru, Jan 1: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim has expressed deep concern over the reports on possibility of withdrawal of more than a dozen cases against Sri Rama Sene leader Pramod Muthalik.

In a letter addressed to Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Mr Ibrahim cautioned against the proposal to drop 13 cases, including 12 hate-speech cases against Muthalik.

“Such a move would send wrong signals and demoralise the police force,” the deputy commissioner said.

It’s worth mentioning here that the Home Ministry had written to the Director of Prosecution to get the opinion of prosecutors on the proposal to drop the 13 cases, including the infamous 2009 pub attack case. Muthalik himself had expressed surprise and shock over the development.

Mr. Ibrahim, in his letter dated December 28, 2015 advised the government against giving freedom to those who indulge in immoral policing and spread communal hatred.

Withdrawal of cases against Muthalik could motivate other fringe elements to take law into their own hands, the DC said.

Bengaluru, May 28: The Karnataka government has done away with previously mandatory COVID-19 testing for asymptomatic international travellers. 

The development comes a day after the government issued a circular, which allowed placing of international travellers into home quarantine if they had completed seven days of institutional quarantine.

A circular signed by Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary to the State Government, dated May 27, says that any “person who has completed seven days of institutional quarantine and is asymptomatic can be permitted for home quarantine with a COVID-19 test (RT-PCR), subject to undergoing a medical check-up.”

This check-up equates to thermal screening (with a required temperature of under 37.5C or 99.5F and pulse oximetry of under 94%). 

The circular added that all elderly people, over the age of 60, and those with comorbidities (such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, asthma, heart ailment, renal disease...etc) are “required to be clinically evaluated diligently prior to shifting them for quarantine.”

On Wednesday, Pankaj Pandey, Commissioner, the Department of Health and Family Welfare said that these new guidelines were based on recommendations from the COVID Task Force. A member of the COVID Task Force said that new strategies had been formulated based on the latest findings on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus affects people.

Mandya, Aug 1: In a terrific incident, a college student has stabbed his own mother to death in Karnataka’s Mandya town over a trivial issue. The police have managed to nab the accused. 

According to police, the boy was irked by his mother rebuking him for staying out with his friends late in the night.

On Wednesday (July 29), she scolded him for not listening to her advice, following which he stabbed her to death, the official said. 

The student was arrested on July 30. He reportedly confessed to the crime. 

A police officer said that the woman was upset over her son frequently spending time with his friends till late in the night.

Jan 6: A Thane resident lost a little over Rs 1 lakh in an online fraud involving popular payment gateways, police said on Saturday. The complainant, a resident of Patlipada, wanted to sell his furniture and posted an ad on Facebook on December 21, an official said.

On December 24, he received a call from one Rajendra Sharma who offered to buy the furniture and wanted to transfer the amount through payment gateways — Paytm and Google Pay, he said.

However, instead of the money getting credited to his account, the complainant found that Rs 1.01 lakh were debited from him during three transactions on two payment gateways, the official said.

The complainant realised that he had been cheated when the accused assured that he would return the money and asked him for another account number, he added.

An offense has been registered against the unidentified accused under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act and further investigations are underway, he said.
