About 19,000 students appear for JEE (Advanced) in tricity

Chandigarh, May 26: About 1,900 students from the tricity appeared for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), Advanced, in Chandigarh on Sunday to get admission in total 16 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), including IT-BHU and ISM Dhanbad, at several centres, including DAV, Sector-15, and Shivalik School, Sector-41.

It is worth mentioning that 1.5 lakh students were declared eligible for JEE (Advanced) in all over the country during the recently held results for JEE (main).

Kunal, an IIT alumni and JEE physics, said that in 2013, 1,754 candidates had appeared for the IIT-JEE (Advanced) from the tricity, of which, total 349 finally made it to the merit list.

While this year, he added, as many as 1,900 students appeared for the JEE (Advanced) and these numbers also include students from Punjab and Haryana who were taking coaching in various training centres in Chandigarh.

In 2013, three students from the tricity made it to top 100 all India ranking in the JEE (Advanced). “We are expecting good results this year and hopeful that more students will secure their place in the top 100 ranking,” said a teacher Anil Verma.

The JEE (Advanced) examination was conducted in two slots, including paper-1 and paper-2—each paper contained questions from physics, mathematics and chemistry of equal weightage.

“Physics part was relatively analytical in comparison to the other sections but overall, the entire paper stressed on basic concepts that needed simple analytical skills to score high marks,” said Keshav, a student.

Anurag Agarwal, a chemistry trainer, said, “This year, IIT focused on trivial questions as in paper-1, only two sections were asked in each subject consisting 10 multiple choice questions with more than one correct options and 10 questions were integer-based.”

He added there was no chance of clearing the JEE (Advanced) by hit-and-trial method. It is lear nt that mathematics part had tricky options, emphasising, on logical side of question.

“One could easily score 70% if he/she had all the fundamentals clear in his mind,” said a student.

The JEE (Advanced) this year was similar in terms of the level of the difficulty but most of the students opined the paper was neither too difficult nor easy. The results of the test will be declared on June 19.
