ABVP demands ban on CFI, PFI; Asks girls to stay away from b'day parties

Mangalore, August 3: Members of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Friday demanding a ban on Popular Front of India (PFI) and Campus Front of India (CFI) organisations.

The students participated in a procession from Jyoti circle to the Deputy Commissioner's office where they held the protest.

Speaking on the occasion Ramesh, State Secretary, ABVP, said that through organisations like CFI, terrorism is growing in college campuses. “The PFI and CFI are nothing but wings of SIMI and are carrying out terrorist activities. They have killed activists of ABVP in Kerala. They are also spoiling the college culture and atmosphere. Through the burqa and scarf issues, they have misguided Muslim girl students”, he said, demanding a ban on the organisations.

Certain college lecturers like Pattabhirama Somayaji expressing support to them is also disheartening, he said.

Mangalore is increasingly becoming a centre of drug mafia. Certain politicians too are behind it. In the name of birthday parties, immoral sexual activities are taking place. Girls should not participate in such parties, Mr. Ramesh said.

Tejas, University College Student Council President, in his address said that members of PFI and CFI are terrorists in the guise of students and accused them of having loyalties towards Pakistan.

Pavithra, another ABVP member, said that organisations like PFI and CFI have contributed in creating conflicts among the students.

NRI Habeeb Ur Rahiman Uppinangady conferred doctorate

Newsroom, Feb 10: Habeeb Ur Rahiman, a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration at Kingdom University Bahrain, has been awarded doctorate from the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi.

He has completed his thesis Influence of Quality of Work Life, Ego Status and Job Attitude on Organisational Commitment and Productivity of Bank Employees under the guidance of Prof Rashmi Kodikal.

Habeeb Ur Rahiman is the son of Yusuf and Ayisha couple from Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district.

After obtaining his Master Degree (MBA, Finance) from Visvesvaraya Technological University in 2012, he had worked in Bearys First Grade College, Kundapura and P A College of Engineering, Mangaluru before migrating to Bahrain.

Udupi fishermen catch Australia deep sea ‘spanner crab’

Udupi, Jan 30: Fishermen in Udupi’s Malpe have netted ‘spanner crab’, a rare variety of deep sea crab, mostly found in Australia and Hawaiian coast.

Hundreds of onlookers were surprised to the see the catch when it was brought to Malpe harbour by the fisherman Prashanth Kunder and others on Tuesday evening.

Dr Shivakumar Haragi, Assistant Professor at Karnatak University, PG Centre Department of Marine Biology, Karwar identified this crab variety as ‘spanner crab’ and the scientific name of this crab is Ranina Ranina.

Ranina Ranina is mainly nocturnal as it remains active during night and is found buried in sand during the day .It is easily distinguished from other crab species in its habitat due to its red carapace and elongated midsection.

Resembling a frog in its shape, this crab species is found mainly in Africa, Hawaiian coast and also in the Great Barrier Reef, located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Its lifetime is seven to nine years and each crab weighs around 400-900 grams.

Prashanth Kunder and his associates have also netted a rare fish variety called yellow-edged lyretail. Another unique variety fish netted by Prashanth is epinephelus flavocaeruleus.

KSRTC to resume AC bus service to 8 cities including Mangaluru from June 25

Bengaluru, Jun 24: Three weeks after the BMTC resumed running air-conditioned buses in the state capital, the state-owned Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced plying AC buses to eight cities to begin with, including to Mangaluru and Mysuru, from Thursday.

From tomorrow travellers can travel to Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kundapura, Madikeri, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Shivamogga and Virajpet in AC buses, KSRTC said in a statement released here.

Listing out the measures taken to check the spread of Covid-19, the Corporation said that the temperature inside the buses will be maintained at 24 to 25 degrees Celsius and no blankets will be provided in the night service buses.
