New Delhi, Sept 27: Five acid attack victims and a transgender today joined their jobs in the Delhi High Court, which, in a unique gesture, gave them employment after their plight was brought to the notice of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal.

A source close to Justice Mittal's office said this was a "path-breaking initiative" by the high court, which could be an example for other institutions in the country to follow.

Confirming the decision, a senior member of the high court administration said "this is the first of its kind when such a decision has been taken. All the six, who joined on Wednesday, have been given clerical jobs as per their qualification."

The judicial officer, who did not wish to be named, said: "We have taken this step, not only to give them a job but to give value to these people".

He said the decision was taken after the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) sent a proposal earlier this month to explore job opportunities for these victims while highlighting their plight.

Pursuant to this, Justice Gita Mittal had interacted with the six persons before proceeding to offer them jobs at the High Court on a contractual basis.

"All of them had faced discrimination and failed to get jobs due to their physical condition, which had prompted the DSLSA and the High Court to intervene," the official said.

All the six, while sharing the commonality of being outcasts in the society, told PTI that they were extremely happy with the high court's decision as they had approached various government bodies for jobs, but to no avail.

Narrating their woes, Babli (29), the transgender, said she was forced to leave her home due to her gender which was not acceptable even to her family members. "No one gave me a job because of my gender," she said.

Nasreen Jahan (38), who have passed 10th standard, has to look after her two daughters as a single parent as she is a divorcee. She was allegedly attacked by her erstwhile husband six months into their divorce.

Another acid attack victim Sapna (25), who recently passed her Class XII exam, was allegedly attacked by a relative who wanted to marry her even after she refused.

With a graduate degree in her hand, Kamar Jahan (27) is clearly the most qualified among the lot. Jahan got married in 2009, but her husband left her and remarried. She was allegedly attacked by her husband's second wife and her relatives.

24-year-old Shobha is the youngest among the group and she has passed the 10th standard. She calls herself lucky after having bagged the job in the high court.

Mamta (29), who has studied till class eight, too felt the same. She said normally acid attack survivors have to face discrimination when it came to getting a job.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has congratulated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal for his party's stupendous victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, saying the people of the national capital will continue to benefit from his leadership.

Responding to the Dalai Lama's statement, Kejriwal in a tweet on Wednesday said, "Am humbled by the kind words and blessings from His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Thank you very much @DalaiLama."

Referring to the Happiness Curriculum for government schools in Delhi, the Dalai Lama said he has a deep admiration for the efforts the AAP government has made towards "shaping better, happier human beings with improved values".

"These measures will have a positive impact on children's overall education, as well as helping the poor to fulfil their dreams of improving their lives," he said.

He also lauded the AAP government's initiative to incorporate aspects of inner mental development into the school curriculum.

"Through such initiatives, you are showing a path to the rest of India," the Dalai Lama added.

In a near-repeat performance of 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday retained power with a stunning victory, winning 62 of the 70 assembly seats and leaving the BJP with just eight seats.

New Delhi, Jan 11: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday said that he has never seen innocents like the Indian people, who believe the claims made by the government on the implementation of its programmes. The former Union Minister, addressing a literary event, said, "I have never seen innocents like the Indian people. If something appears on print (and named two newspapers also), we believe it. We believe anything."

Claims like all villages having been electrified in the country and toilets built for 99 per cent of families in India were being believed, he said.

Similar was the case of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or PM-JAY is a flagship health care scheme of the Centre), he alleged.

Stating that his Delhi-based driver's father had to get a surgery done under the scheme, he said, however, it could not be performed.

"I asked him (car driver) if he had the Ayushman card and he showed a card and I told him to take it (to hospital). In hospital after hospital, they said they were not aware of anything like that (Ayushman scheme). But we believe that the Ayushman scheme has come to the whole of India," he said.

Further, he said "we believe that for any disease, treatment will be done (indicating the Ayushman scheme) without shelling out money. We are being innocents."

Many news items and data were contrary to the truth, he added.
