Activists condemn minimal female representation in PTI government

Islamabad, Aug 28: Women’s rights campaigners have expressed concern over the minimal female presence in the new Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf government’s cabinets in the center, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urging the party to review its appointments.

“Pakistan’s politics and political parties are unfortunately male dominated and that’s why women lawmakers are not given the importance they deserve for being a parliamentarian,” said Farzana Bari, a gender specialist and women’s rights activist. She added that there is need to change the political culture in the country through mass awareness campaigns.

“Women make up 50 percent of Pakistan’s population and yet they are yet to be included in the decision-making process at the government level,” she said.

Bari said that activists and gender-equality organizations have been lobbying for increased inclusion of women in the country’s politics and decision-making processes, but much remains to be done.

“Legislation is the only solution for due share of female lawmakers in cabinets and other decision-making bodies,” she said, adding that female lawmakers in Pakistan have been historically more active in raising issues on the floor of parliament compared with their male colleagues.

In the July 25 general elections, PTI emerged as the single largest party in the center and the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where it has now formed governments.

The 24-member cabinet in the center appointed by new Prime Minister Imran Khan, the PTI leader, includes only three women: Dr. Shireen Mazari, Zubaida Jalal and Dr. Fehmida Mirza. In Punjab, Dr. Yasmeen Rashid is the only woman in the 23-member cabinet, and there are no women at all in the 15-member cabinet of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Alia Amirali, deputy secretary of the Women Democratic Front, said that political parties in Pakistan, including PTI, like to portray themselves as progressive and supporters of women’s rights while campaigning, but fail to recognize the importance and potential of women when in power.

“Our women are educated and vibrant and they want to play their role in the nation building but our male-dominant politics fails them,” she said. The situation for women will not change, she added, until female lawmakers of all party affiliations speak up for their rights, inside and outside the parliament.

“If the women lawmakers cannot get their own due rights, how will they fight for rights of ordinary girls and women in villages and remote areas?” said Amirali. “No nation can develop without the active participation of women, and our rulers need to realize this fact as early as possible.”

Professor Tahir Malik, an academic and political analyst, said political parties largely ignore women lawmakers when appointing members of the cabinet and other decision-making bodies, believing that they have already adequately accommodated female lawmakers simply by granting them seats in the parliament.

“The situation is likely to remain the same until more women become members of the parliament by winning direct elections, instead of being elected on reserved seats,” he added.

Azhar Laghari, PTI’s head of public relations, said that his party holds its elected women in high esteem and will give them more cabinet positions in the coming months.

“You will see more women ministers in the center and provinces where the PTI is in government after the cabinets are expanded in next few months,” he said. “Ours is the only party that has effectively raised women’s issues at all forums and we will continue doing so, besides increasing their strength in the cabinets.”

Washington, Jun 24: Twitter has once again flagged a tweet from US President Donald Trump which promoted violence by saying if protesters tried to set up an "autonomous zone" in Washington, DC they would be met with "serious force".

This is the fourth time Twitter has red flagged Trump's tweet for glorifying violence or violating its policies.

Trump has been critical of the "autonomous zone" in Seattle, an area occupied by protestors for much of this month.

"We've placed a public interest notice on this Tweet for violating our policy against abusive behaviour, specifically, the presence of a threat of harm against an identifiable group," Twitter's safety team tweeted late Tuesday.

Trump had tweeted: "There will never be an ‘Autonomous Zone' in Washington, D.C., as long as I'm your President. If they try they will be met with serious force!"

Twitter earlier labeled a video tweeted by him which mocked CNN as manipulated media.

According to Twitter, "this Tweet has been labeled per our synthetic and manipulated media policy to give people more context".

In May, Twitter labeled two Trump tweets that made false claims about mail-in ballots in California.

Twitter later labeled another Trump tweet glorifying violence in which he said, "when the looting starts, the shooting starts."

Facebook also removed a Trump campaign ad featuring a symbol used by Nazis for political dissenters, saying the ad violated its policies.

Washington, Mar 28: A US-based lab has unveiled a portable test that can tell if someone has COVID-19 in as little as five minutes, it said in a statement Friday.

Abbot Laboratories said the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had given it emergency authorization to begin making the test available to healthcare providers as early as next week.

The test, which is the size of a small toaster and uses molecular technology, also shows negative results within 13 minutes, the company said in a press statement.

"The COVID-19 pandemic will be fought on multiple fronts, and a portable molecular test that offers results in minutes adds to the broad range of diagnostic solutions needed to combat this virus," said Abbot president and chief operating officer Robert Ford.

The test's small size means it can be deployed outside the "traditional four walls of a hospital in outbreak hotspots," Ford said, and Abbott is working with the FDA to send it to virus epicenters.

The test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, and has only been authorized for emergency use by approved labs and healthcare providers, the company said.

Washington, Jun 18: US Defence officials are concerned over China's use of COVID-19 situation to gain stakes in strategically important companies of United States as the impact of novel coronavirus has left several companies in dire need of capital.

Amid the pandemic, it getting hard for the defence department to keep an eye on national security and help protect smaller companies down the chain, CNN reported.

"We are paying close attention to any indicators that China is leveraging Covid-19 to take advantage of a situation where defence companies need capital more than ever," a defence official told CNN.

In April, Ellen Lord, undersecretary of defence for acquisition and sustainment said it is paying close attention to 'adversaries' against the 'economic warfare' with the United States.

"We have to be very, very careful about the focused efforts some of our adversaries have to really undergo sort of economic warfare with us, which has been going on for some time," Ellen Lord, undersecretary of defence for acquisition and sustainment was quoted as saying by CNN.

US Committee on Foreign Investment protects its interest against hostile countries gaining ownership in strategically important companies. But the pandemic is changing the definition of national security concerns to include drugs, protective gear and medical supplies.

"These are now national security needs and we probably should have been thinking about it a long time ago in terms of biowarfare that we should have a trusted industrial base or a set of trusted allies -- the UK, or NATO allies or Japan or Korea -- who are trusted in that regard," Bill Greenwalt, a former Pentagon official.

Give the threat posed by foreign acquisition, Pentagon has been offering tools to help small US businesses defend themselves against adversarial investment and conducting background checks with other government agencies to ensure transparency.

US President Donald Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro recently told CNN if Trump wins reelection, Washington DC will likely take offshore supply chains as national security priorities.

"If we fail to do that in the face of this crisis, we will have failed this country and all future generations of Americans," Navarro said.

The US State Department has also warned US allies to "avoid economic overreliance on China" and "guard their critical infrastructure" from China's influence.

Chad P Bown, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, pointed to recent China's economic coercion of Australia on the political matter saying, "this is how China operates and everybody knows it."
