Activists like Jignesh should contest in 25 seats in Karnataka: Teesta Setalvad

Chikkamagaluru, Dec 28: Journalist-turned-activist Teesta Setalvad has obliquely called upon the activists in Karnataka to take a political plunge in the upcoming elections.

Speaking after inaugurating a two-day event organised by Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the organisation on Thursday, she said that she was seeing a ray of hope after recent Gujarat assembly polls.

“The hegemonical tendencies of Hindutva are cracking in Gujarat. Victory of Jignesh Mevani is not an individual’s victory but a sign for the need for an alternative politics,” she said. 

She stressed the need for a replica of Jignesh Mevani model of victory in Karnataka in the coming elections. “In 20 to 25 seats in Karnataka such activists should contest and win,” she said. 

Taking serious objection to Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde’s recent statement on changing the Constitution, she said the people of the State will give a fitting reply to his statements in the coming days.

“The Constitution drafted under the leadership of B.R. Ambedkar is the representation of sacrifice and aspiration of workers, farmers, women, and minorities of the land,” she said. She further said that speaking about a Hindu Rashtra itself is anti-constitutional.

Remembering Gauri Lankesh, the martyred journalist who was associated with Komu Souharda Vedike, Ms Setalvad said her memory inspires all. “The best tribute to her life and the only way we can defy the forces that killed her is to carry on the fight,” she added.

In the inaugural session of the two-day event tributes were paid to intellectuals who participated in the activities of the organisation. They included K.Ramdas, Hassan Mansoor, Yuvaraj, Pastor Anand, Ananathamurthy, Ajeej, H.L. Keshavamurthy, Gauri Lankesh and Lakshman G. Office-bearers of Komu Souharda Vedike were present.

Bengaluru, Aug 3: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee working president Satish Jarakiholi on Sunday said that as per the party sources, state chief minister BS Yediyurappa has got only six months' time and there are different teams working against Yediyurappa in their party.

The BJP high command has decided to bring down Yediyurappa, Jarakhioli said. He added, "Yediyurappa had asked BJP high command to appoint him Chief Minister for six months and due to corona, his period has been extended. But now their own party sources have revealed that he has got only another six months."

While addressing the issue of different statements by BJP leaders and ministership aspirants after five MLCs were nominated, Jarakiholi said "Yediyurappa followers are not actual followers. BJP high command has already decided to bring down Yediyurappa as per their own party sources."

While speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said there are teams formed in the names of deputy CMs and there are many who are working in their party against Yediyurappa.

He also said that it's up to their party what they think about Yediyurappa's tenure, whether they keep him as CM or remove him. Being in Opposition, now Congress is only working on strengthening the party, he said.

Udupi, Aug 1: A girl child died five persons suffered injuries in a car accident today on National Highway-66 near Ambalpady in Udupi.

According to sources, two couples and children were travelling in the car from Mangaluru to Shikaripura when the tragedy took place. 

The speeding car rammed into the road divider and flipped over after the driver lost control over it near Ambalpady. 

Among the injured, the condition of a woman is said to be critical. She has been admitted to KMC Hospital in Manipal. The other passengers escaped with minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Udupi town traffic police station and investigations are on. More details are awaited.

Bengaluru, May 29: The hotel industry is one of the worst-hit industries due to lockdown, along with the tourism industry. Bengaluru's hotel industry has incurred a loss of around Rs 1200 crore during the lockdown period however, the hotels here are likely to open in June if the State government issues guidelines for the resumption of their services.

Speaking to media, PC Rao, President, Bangalore Hotelier's Association said, "It's not only the loss of business, but we have lost the customer base as well. 
We don't expect any good future for the next six months. There will be a slow down in the business even after opening."

"We have requested our CM to give first preference to the hotels. We are going to restart our business in June if granted permission. Around 10 per cent of the hotels cannot open at all. They are in the stage of merging or closing down position. Few hotels may open after five or six months," he added.

He continued saying that many hotels are for sale but there are no buyers. There are around 21,000 restaurants in Bangalore, 3500 hotels with rooms and restaurant which has an average turnover of Rs 20 crores per day, Rao informed.

"We expect losses of around Rs 1200 crores in these two months. We are giving special online training to all the hoteliers and to our managers particularly to deal with the COVID-19 situation, including how to deal with the guests, employees, how to start the hotel services. 

Each and every manager has already been trained and we are still continuing it. We will conduct face to face meeting as well and brief the managers," said Rao.
