Adrift off Bhatkal coast, 23 fishermen rescued by Indian coast guards

Mangaluru, Sept 18: The Indian Coast Guards today rescued as many as 23 crew members on board a fishing vessel which had gone adrift due to engine failure.

23 fishermen, who had set sail from Bhatkal, were drifting in the high seas after their engine developed a technical snag.

Karnataka state Coastal Security police who picked up the distress signals from the adrift fishermen, contacted Indian Coast Guards.

Indian Coast Guard ship Rajdoot, on patrol off Karnataka and Goa coast was diverted to the site of drifting fishing boat, 30 nautical miles away from Mavinakurve.

All the 23 crew on board the fishing boat were reported safe. Coast Guard authorities then requested IFB Pavan Sutta (Reg no KA02MM1826) that was fishing in the vicinity for towing assistance.

At present, the fishing boat is being towed to Bhatkal. IFB SDY is also providing assistance to the Coast Guard, DIG S S Dasila, commander, Coast Guard Karnataka, said.

41 new covid-19 cases reported in Karnataka; total 794

Bengaluru, May 9: With 41 new cases of COVID-19 reported on Saturday, the total number of positive cases in Karnataka has reached 794, said the state Health Department.

Out of the total number, 386 are discharged and 30 patients have passed away. The total number of active cases now in Karnataka is 377.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases across the country is 59,662, including 39,834 active cases.

Till now, 17,846 patients have been cured and discharged and 1,981 deaths have been recorded in the country, as per the data provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

SC stays K'taka HC order granting bail to 21 PFI members accused of violence during anti-CAA protests

New Delhi, Mar 7: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the bail granted by Karnataka High Court to 21 Popular Front of India (PFI) members accused in connection with violence that erupted during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Karnataka's Mangaluru in December 2019.

On February 17, the High Court had granted bail to the accused on the bail petition filed by Mohammed Ashik.

A bench consisting Chief Justice S A Bobde issued notice to the accused on Friday after taking cognisance of the plea filed by Karnataka government against the bail granted by the High Court.

Appearing for the state government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta criticised the High Court's order stating that at least 56 policemen sustained injuries during the violent protests.

Two persons identified as Jaleel (43) of Kudroli and Nousheen (49) of Bengre had died at a private hospital following the bullet injuries they sustained in an alleged police firing during a protest against CAA 2019.

Bengaluru gym owners gear up to reopen after 5-month hiatus

Bengaluru, Jul 31: Gyms in Bengaluru carried out sanitation work on Thursday following the Centre's nod to reopen gyms from August 5, after several weeks of COVID-induced lockdowns.

"We are taking all the precautionary measures prescribed by the government and will follow the guidelines very strictly. A thermal scanner, oximeter and hand sanitizers have been placed at the entrance of the gym.

We request all other gym owners also to follow the guidelines strictly to keep their members safe and healthy," said Prasad Kumar, a gym owner in Bangalore.

He added, "The last few months have been very difficult for us gym owners and fitness instructors. We are very grateful to the government for allowing us to re-open.

We are going to be very cautious when we open. Even before this COVID-19 pandemic, we used to sanitise all the equipment before and after every use so hopefully, this won't be too difficult for us. We are getting rid of the air conditioners to allow cross ventilation and open the space a little more."

According to Chandu Gowda, an actor and frequenter of the gym, working out at home was not the same as working out in the gym with the proper equipment.

"I'm very glad that I get to come back and work out as I used to before this lockdown. For an actor, working out is extremely important, not just for my physical health but also mental health.

Doing exercises at home is never as good as exercising in a space dedicated to one purpose. I hope other members of the gym follow the rules and regulations religiously," Gowda said.
