AERA hikes Bangalore airport charges; IATA opposes the move

In a latest order, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) also fixed charges for aircraft landing, parking, housing and other charges from July 1 till March 31 next year and higher tariff rates from April 1, 2015 till March end 2016.

While only UDF levels were lowered for 2015-16 to Rs1,226 for embarking international passengers and Rs 306 for domestic passengers, all the other tariffs were hiked for this period.

Terming the move as "a double whammy to Indian aviation", IATA's Regional Vice President (Asia Pacific) Conrad Clifford said in a statement that international airlines operating to Bangalore would now face "a steep increase in their operating costs with a 145 per cent increase in landing charges and a 105 per cent increase in parking charges".

The official of the global airlines body said it was also "disappointing" that AERA "deviated from the single till approach" in the case of Kempegowda International Airport which was "contrary to what AERA had previously opined that the single till approach was most appropriate for India".

"This deviation in policy can increase costs for airlines and passengers, thus negatively impacting traffic. This will hurt an already fragile Indian aviation industry," Clifford said, adding that funding airport development was "not a valid justification to deviate from the single till approach."

Under the 'single till' principle, airport activities, both aeronautical and commercial, are taken into consideration to determine the level of airport charges. By contrast, only aeronautical activities are taken into consideration under the dual till principle.

Maintaining that funding of the airport could be done through other means like equity, loans and bonds, Clifford said: "Instead, airport users are being penalised by being a convenient source of funding. They are unfairly made to pay for facilities that have yet to be built."

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has been stressing that aviation should be treated as a strategic national asset that would pay dividends to the Indian economy.

Aviation supports 8.8 million Indian jobs and underpins 1.5 per cent of GDP, as per IATA figures.

"This could be a lot more. And the more globally connected that India is, the more opportunities will be created for jobs, trade and inward investment. AERA's decision is a step backwards for Indian aviation," the IATA officer said from Singapore.

Defectors should be banned from holding public office for 5 years, fighting next poll: Kapil Sibal

New Delhi, Jul 19: Amid the political firestorm in Rajasthan following Sachin Pilot's rebellion, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday called for amending the anti-defection law to ban all defectors from holding public office for five years and fighting the next election.

Sibal also said that the "antibodies" against the "virus of corrupt means" to topple elected governments lie in amending the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution (anti-defection law).

His attack comes in the wake of Pilot's open rebellion against the Ashok Gehlot government, which has been on shaky ground since, with at least 18 legislators backing the rebel leader.

Pilot was sacked as deputy chief minister and the state Congress chief earlier this week.

The Congress has accused the BJP of making efforts to topple the Gehlot government by indulging in horse-trading.

"Need for Vaccine: Virus of 'corrupt means' to topple elected governments has spread through a 'Wuhan like facility' in Delhi," Sibal tweeted, in an apparent swipe at the BJP.

"Its 'antibodies' lie in amending the Tenth Schedule. Ban all defectors from: Holding public office for five years, fighting the next election," he said.

Taking a swipe at Pilot over his claim that he is not joining the BJP, Sibal on Thursday had asked what happens to his "ghar wapsi" and whether Rajasthan's dissident legislators are vacationing in Haryana under the "watchful eye" of the saffron party.

In the house of 200, the Congress has 107 MLAs, including the 19 dissidents who have been issued notices of disqualification by the speaker and they have challenged them in the high court.

The Congress has maintained the claim that the Gehlot government has the support of 109 MLAs, including the two BTP MLAs.

Delhi: Cong promises unemployment allowance, cashback schemes, 300 units free power

New Delhi, Feb 2: The Congress on Sunday released its manifesto for Delhi polls, promising to implement unemployment allowance of Rs 5,000-7,500 per month and cashback schemes for water and power consumers, if voted to power.

Presenting the manifesto, Delhi Congress chief Subhash Chopra said the party will provide free power up to 300 unit per month.

The manifesto also committed to spend 25 per cent budget each year on fighting pollution and improving transport facilities.

An unemployment allowance of Rs 5,000 for graduates and Rs 7,500 for post graduates per month will be provided under the Yuva Swabhiman Yojna, he said.

The Congress will launch flagship cashback schemes for power and water supply to benefit consumers saving these resources. The party, if voted to power, will open 100 Indira Canteens to provide subsidised meals at Rs 15, Chopra said.

The Congress will challenge the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Supreme Court and demand the Centre to withdraw the law. The party will also not implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the existing form of the National Population Register (NPR), if voted to power in Delhi.

One has to go to jail to gain respect and become a leader: BJP MP Dilip Ghosh

Jan 30: BJP leader and West Bengal party head, Dilip Ghosh has yet again made a controversial statement. He said that one has to go to jail in order to gain respect or become a political leader.

"You will not be a leader if you don't go to jail, if Police don't take you, then you must go there yourself. If they don't give you any scope, you do something to go to jail, only then will people respect you. There is no place for soft people in politics," ANI quoted Ghosh as saying.

Earlier, Ghosh had triggered a controversy by saying that anti-CAA protestors in Assam and Uttar Pradesh were shot dead "like dogs", and similar punishment should be given to protestors in Bengal.
