Bengaluru, Jun 6: C M Lingappa, Congress leader from Ramanagaram and MLC has hit out at Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G. Parameshwara for extending the party’s support to the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate in the Assembly byelections in Ramanagaram constituency. He said such a move would ruin the Congress’ growth in the State.

“We are ashamed to say that he is our State Congress president. After becoming the Deputy Chief Minister, he has forgotten Congress leaders and workers. All these attempts will lead to the selling out of the party and its workers,” Mr. Lingappa said.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the JD(S)’s H.D. Kumaraswamy won from both Ramanagaram and Channapatna constituencies, and he chose to vacate the Ramanagaram seat. The Election Commission is soon expected to announce bypolls to Ramanagaram segment.

Addressing mediapersons, Mr. Lingappa, former MLA, said the KPCC chief did not even have the courtesy to discuss the issue with the District Congress Committee office-bearers. “Mr. Parameshwara, who has become the Deputy CM, has no ambition of becoming CM in the Congress government,” he alleged.

A few days ago, Mr. Lingappa, a close associate of senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar and his brother, made a sensational allegation against BJP national president Amit Shah. He said that when Mr. Shivakumar had taken the lead in keeping Gujarat Congress MLAs together at a resort in Bidadi in August 2017, Mr. Shah had called and asked him to send four Congress MLAs to the BJP camp. Later, income tax officials raided the resort.

Bengaluru, Jan 23: City civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) levied a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for using single-use plastic cups during the recent India-Australia one-day international match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

"Despite many awareness meetings, BBMP has found that single-use plastic cups were used during yesterday's cricket match and has fined KSCA Rs 50,000 as penalty," tweeted the civic body commissioner BH Anil Kumar.

The state cricket association treasurer Vinaya Mruthyunjaya said the civic body gave a general notice without detailed information on plastic use.

"We have been environmentally friendly for the last many years and at all gates, security has made sure no plastic or flex was allowed inside the stadium," Mruthyunjaya told media.

Mruthyunjaya said KSCA sought information from the civic body as to where the single-use plastic cups were found in the stadium during the India-Australia match.

On January 16, KSCA president Roger Binny inaugurated a plastic bottle shredder at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, in addition to other green initiatives at the cricket ground such as solar panels, sub-air system, biogas unit, rainwater harvesting and others.

Similarly, in December 2019, BBMP cracked down on popular fast food eatery – Adyar Anand Bhavan in HSR Layout and fined the establishment Rs 1 lakh for plastic use.

In October, the BBMP fined eateries including McDonald's in central Bengaluru for using plastic.

Bengaluru, May 24: Karnataka Tourism Minister CT Ravi said that coronavirus lockdown has severely marred the tourism industry in the state and the government will revive it in a phased manner.

"It would be beneficial if hotels are opened keeping in mind few restrictions. At present, the tourism industry has fallen flat making it very difficult to promote tourism in the state," Ravi said.

"Our department has planned to promote tourism in a phased manner. In the first phase, we would focus on native tourism; then in the second phase, we will promote inter-district travel; in the third phase, we will put weight behind inter-state tourism and in the fourth phase, we would be promoting international travel and tourism," he added.

Karnataka's COVID-19 count surges to 1,958 with 216 new cases of the virus reported in the last 24 hours, said the Health Department in a bulletin on Saturday.

Out of the total number of cases, 1,307 patients are active cases and 608 patients have been discharged. The total number of fatalities due to COVID-19 in the state has risen to 42.
