After 'nationalism' lectures, JNU to have presentations on 'azadi'

March 20, 2016

New Delhi, Mar 20: Following conclusion of a month-long series of lectures on "nationalism", the teachers of JNU, which is at the centre of a row over the Afzal Guru event, have now decided to hold a string of presentations on "azadi".jnu-class

After a controversy erupted over the event on campus against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised, JNU teachers had decided to hold open air nationalism classes to teach the hotly debated subject to the students.

"Now that the month-long nationalism lecture series has concluded and three of our comrades who were in jail in a sedition case for raising their voices are also back on campus, we will begin the 2nd lecture series," said Ajay Patnaik, President of JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA).

"The title of the series will be 'Azadi: Different Meanings of Freedom' beginning on March 21 and the first lecture will be taken by Partha Chatterjee," he added.

Following JNU Students Union president Kanhiaya Kumar's speech on his return to campus, an "azadi anthem" demanding freedom from various ills of the society including poverty, casteism, corruption and dowry harassment, has garnered huge popularity on campus.

The earlier series on nationalism saw eminent academicians including Romila Thapar, Harbans Mukhia, Tanika Sarkar, Jayati Ghosh, Prabhat Patnaik, Amit Sengupta, Mridula Mukherjee, Makaranad Paranjpe and Apporvanand, among others, delivering lectures at the administration block, which has been the protest venue for students ever since Kanhaiya was arrested on February 12.

Some of the topics for the nationalism lecture series were Gender and Nationalism, Dalits and Hindutva agenda of nation making, Worldview, University and Nation; Political culture of fascism; Sedition and Nationalism; Uncivil wars: Tagore, Gandhi, JNU and What's left of the Nation; History and Nationalism: Then and now.

While Kanhaiya walked out of Tihar jail after getting bail on march 4, two more students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, were freed later.

The university, whose five-member high-level committee has found a few students, including the trio, guilty of violation of discipline norms, is expected to take a final call in the coming week on the 'quantum of punishment' for the students for their alleged role in the February 9 event.

New Delhi, Jun 29: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Central government to find out the facts related to blacklisting and canceling of visas of foreign nationals who attended the congregation of Tablighi Jamaat in Nizamuddin area here.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar and also comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna asked the Centre to find out the facts related to the matter and fixed it for further hearing on July 2.

The apex court asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta "if visas of these foreigners are canceled, then why are they still in India?"

"You (Centre) can deport them. If visas are not canceled, then, it is a different situation," the court said. The top court was hearing a number of petitions challenging blacklisting and cancellation of visas filed by few foreigners.

Mehta sought more time to file a reply on the matter, after which the court posted the matter for further hearing on July 2.

The petitions, filed by the foreign nationals from 35 countries, have sought directions to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to remove their names from the blacklist, reinstate their visas and facilitate their return to their respective countries.

The petitions sought to declare the decision of the MHA of blacklisting the foreign nationals who attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation as "arbitrary".

"Unilateral blacklisting of 960 foreigners by the Home Ministry vide press release dated April 2, 2020, and the subsequent blacklisting of around 2500 foreigners as reported on June 4, 2020, is in violation of Article 21. Therefore, it is void and unconstitutional as the petitioners have neither been provided any hearing nor notice or intimation in this regard," the plea said.

One of the petitioners named Fareedah Cheema, a Thai national in the seventh month of her pregnancy, said she was quarantined in March, like other foreign nationals but was released from quarantine only in late May and is still at a facility under restricted movements, without the avenue to go back to her home nation and experience the birth of her child with security and dignity, with her loved ones.

These foreign nationals presently in India were blacklisted for a period of 10 years from traveling to India for their alleged involvement in Tablighi Jamaat activities.

The Home Ministry had said that foreign Tablighi Jamaat members, who were staying in India in violation of visa rules during the nationwide lockdown implemented to combat the COVID-19 spread, have been blacklisted.
A large congregation organised by Tablighi Jamaat in the national capital in March had emerged as a major COVID-19 hotspot in the country.

The government had said the decision of banning the foreign Tablighi Jamaat members was taken after details of foreigners found illegally living in mosques and religious places emerged from various states across the country.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has congratulated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal for his party's stupendous victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, saying the people of the national capital will continue to benefit from his leadership.

Responding to the Dalai Lama's statement, Kejriwal in a tweet on Wednesday said, "Am humbled by the kind words and blessings from His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Thank you very much @DalaiLama."

Referring to the Happiness Curriculum for government schools in Delhi, the Dalai Lama said he has a deep admiration for the efforts the AAP government has made towards "shaping better, happier human beings with improved values".

"These measures will have a positive impact on children's overall education, as well as helping the poor to fulfil their dreams of improving their lives," he said.

He also lauded the AAP government's initiative to incorporate aspects of inner mental development into the school curriculum.

"Through such initiatives, you are showing a path to the rest of India," the Dalai Lama added.

In a near-repeat performance of 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday retained power with a stunning victory, winning 62 of the 70 assembly seats and leaving the BJP with just eight seats.
