After raids on premises, Delhi-based jeweller jumps from DRI office, dies

New Delhi, Apr 26: A Delhi-based jeweller allegedly committed suicide after jumping off the sixth floor of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) building in the national capital, after a raid was conducted at his store and residence in the city.

The jeweller, who has been identified as Gaurav Gupta, was found lying in a pool of blood after jumping off the building at around 12:00 p.m.

He was immediately shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by the officials present at the CGO complex but was declared brought dead on arrival.According to the DRI officials, the man was neither summoned nor arrested after the raid. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the case.

The DRI said in a release, "A total of Rs. 13 crore smuggled goods were seized from Gaurav Gupta's possession. But unfortunately, the owner of the smuggled goods jumped through the window of the visitor's room at around 12 p.m. He was neither summoned nor arrested by the DRI. The person was immediately taken to the Safdarjung Hospital by officers of DRI and CISF of CGO complex, but his life could not be saved."

However, the wife of the deceased, Stuti Gupta, has written a letter to the SHO of Shalimar Bagh to take stringent action against a DRI official Nishant and his team. The wife has also alleged that Gaurav was murdered by the said DRI officials.

The police have said that the deceased's body will be given to the family after a post-mortem examination.

"During the search operation on April 24, the officers recovered around 6 kgs of foreign marked gold and 213 kgs of Silver Bullion from the residence," states the press release of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

"During the further search operation on April 25, the officers recovered 35 kgs more foreign marked gold concealed in the door panel of the safe on one of the shops of the same person. In total 41 Kgs of foreign marked gold, 213 Kgs of bullion and Rs 48 lakh cash," the press release further states.

Panipat, Mar 3: A 22-year-old man was charred to death after he came in contact with a live electricity wire while posing for a TikTok video near the Matlaudha railway station here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday evening when Vikas, a resident of Dharamgarh village, climbed a pole over which the wire was passing and posed for the video, police said.

His three friends were standing below when the accident took place.

Vikas came in contact with the wire carrying 25,000 volts current and was burnt, police said.

Police have sent the body for a post-mortem and started investigation into the matter.

New Delhi, May 26: A massive fire broke out on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday in the slums of the Tughlaqabad area in south east Delhi in which over 250 shanties were gutted, however, no one was injured, fire officials said.

Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer, told IANS, "We came to know about the fire in the slums around 12.15 a.m. following which 28 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. And the fire was brought under control by 4 a.m."

He said, the Tughalaqbad slums have over 500 shanties, out of which over 250 have been destroyed in the fire.

He said, it took time for the fire tenders to reach the spot as it was on the hills, but the fire was doused within four hours and by 8 a.m. cooling off procedure has also been completed.

When asked if there is any casualty in the incident, he said, "No injury or casualty has been reported."

He also said that as of now the actual reason for the fire is not known. "But we are trying to find out the reason of the fire," Garg added.

South East Deputy Commissioner of Police R.P. Meena said, "In the night it seemed that almost 500 shanties were gutted. However, in the morning it became clear that only 250 shanties have been gutted in fire."

He said, the South East district police after receiving the call also rushed the ambulances and the local police team in the area for rescue operation. Meena further said that very few people were residing in the shanties, and the people came out of their shanties after the fire broke out in one of them.

Kozhikode, Jun 26: A man, who had returned from Bahrain on Thursday and has been under quarantine at his house in Villyapallai near here, has been stabbed on his arm by an unidentified person.

Police sources said the assailant, with a masked face, had ransacked the man's house by break-opening the door at midnight lat night and stabbed Lijeesh on his arm and fled from the scene.

The nearby residents took Lijeesh to a nearby hospital and was put back on quarantine.
