Ghalib Afzal Guru, son of executed Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, is once again in news for academic reasons.

Ghalib bagged 441 marks in the Class XII exam for which the result was declared by Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education on Thursday.

Among those who have cleared the class XII exam conducted by the JKBOSE is Burhan Wani's brother Muhammad Naveed Aalam. Scoring 387 marks out of maximum 500, Naveed passed with distinction.

Speaking to media, Ghalib showed his discontent with the grades as he was expecting more marks. "But Biology and English have somewhat upset the grades. The marks in the two subjects are not to my satisfaction", he said.

Back home Ghalib's mother Tabasum Guru is receiving a steady stream of guests, who are flocking to congratulate the 18-year-old boy for extraordinary success despite crisis and tension.

"People in large numbers are coming to congratulate Ghalib.  Some are showering confetti to express their love and affection.  But Ghalib is not satisfied with the marks", said Tabasum.Ghalib was just two years old when his father Afzal Guru was arrested for parliament attack case. Guru had named him after famous Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib given his penchant for his poetry. Family sources said Afzal Guru was always reciting Ghalib’s famous couplet, `Hum Ne Mana Ke Tagaaful Na Karoge Lekin, Khaak Ho Jaayenge Hum Tumko Khabar Hone Tak ‘…

Afzal Guru, along with SAR Geelani, Showkat  Guoo and his wife Afshan Guru was charged with planning the attack on the parliament on December 13, 2001.  Supreme Court later upheld the death sentence of Afzal Guru but acquitted SAR Geelani and Afshan.

Showkat, hailing from Sopore, who was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, was released after completing his jail term in 2011. Guru was hanged and buried in Tihar jail on February 9, 2013.

After the apex court verdict, Afzal’s wife Tabasum and son Ghalib met former president APJ Abdul Kalam and sought pardon for the parliament attack convict. The mercy plea of Afzal was rejected by former president Pranab Mukherjee before he was hanged.

In fact, Ghalib qualified the Class XII when his father's fifth death anniversary is just a month away. "Obviously I am missing him today", said Ghalib.

But he is determined to realise his father's dream to become a doctor.  In fact, Ghalib has been working hard to prepare for NEET.  "I want to become a doctor.  I am preparing for it.  If I am not able to qualify,  I will prepare for civil services",  Ghalib said.

Washington, Feb 14: The United States has called for making Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed accountable for his involvement in the planning of "numerous acts of terrorism, including 2008 Mumbai attacks". "We continue to call for Hafiz Saeed to be held accountable for his involvement in the planning of numerous acts of terrorism, including 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 innocent people, including 6 Americans," US State Department spokesperson said on Thursday (February 13, 2020).

US State Department spokesperson said this while commenting on the Saeed`s conviction in terror financing cases.

The spokesperson said Hafiz Saeed`s conviction on terror financing is a step towards curtailing the operation of a terrorist group that threatens peace and stability in South Asia.

"We urge Pakistan to continue to take appropriate legal action against individuals who commit acts of terrorism, raise funds for, or advocate for terrorism," the official said.

On Wednesday, Alice Wells, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of US for South and Central Asian Affairs had termed the conviction of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed as an "important step forward" towards holding terrorist organisation LeT "accountable for its crimes".

"Today`s conviction of Hafiz Saeed and his associate is an important step forward - both toward holding LeT accountable for its crimes and for #Pakistan in meeting its international commitments to combat terrorist financing," she tweeted.

"And as @ImranKhanPTI has said, it is in the interest of #Pakistan`s future that it not allow non-state actors to operate from its soil," she said in another tweet.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Pakistan on Wednesday sentenced Mumbai terror attack mastermind and chief of the banned Jamaat-ud -Dawa (JuD) Hafiz Saeed to five-and-a-half years in prison each in two terror financing cases.

Pakistan based Dawn reported that he was slapped with a prison sentence of five-and-a-half years and a fine of Rs15,000 in each case and the sentences of both cases will run concurrently.

New Delhi, Jun 17: Petrol and diesel prices were increased in metros on Wednesday, marking the eleventh straight day of increase since state-owned oil companies returned to the normal practice of daily reviews following a 12-week pause. With effect from 6 am, the price of petrol was increased by 55 paise per litre, and diesel by 69 paise per litre in Delhi, compared to the previous day. While the price of petrol was revised to Rs 77.28 per litre in the national capital from Rs 76.73 per litre the previous day, the diesel rate was increased to Rs 75.79 per litre from Rs 75.19 per litre, according to notifications from state-run Indian Oil Corporation, the country's largest fuel retailer. In the 11-day period, the price of petrol has been increased by a cumulative Rs 6.02 per litre, and diesel by Rs 6.49 per litre.

International crude oil prices retreated on Wednesday, weighed down by an increase in US crude inventories and worries about a potential second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Brent crude futures - the global benchmark for crude oil - were last seen trading 1.0 per cent lower at $40.56 per barrel.

State-run oil marketing companies revise the prices of petrol and diesel from time to time, besides aviation turbine fuel (ATF) - or jet fuel - and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). However, since March 16, the oil companies had kept petrol and diesel prices on hold, possibly due to the volatility in global oil markets.

Fuel retailing in the country is dominated by state refiners - Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. The three own about 90 per cent of the retail fuel outlets in the country.

Jaipur, July 13: Amid deepening political crisis in Rajasthan, a crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be held at the chief minister's residence here on Monday.

The Congress has issued a whip to all party legislators mandating their presence during the meeting which will be convened at 10.30 am by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot has made it clear that he is not going to attend the meeting.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, Pilot had claimed that the Ashok Gehlot government was in minority and more than 30 Congress and some independent legislators have pledged support to him.

By doing so, he has openly displayed rebellion against the leadership of Gehlot.

However, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Avinash Pande has said that 109 MLAs have expressed confidence in the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government in the state and have signed a letter in support.

Pande said a whip had been issued asking all the MLAs to attend the CLP meeting and that action will be taken against those who skip it.

In the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, the Congress has 107 MLAs and the BJP 72.

The Congress has the support of 10 out of 13 independents, and other party MLAs like Rashtriya Lok Dal (1), which is its ally. The Congress also considers Bhartiya Tribal Party (2) and CPI(M) (2) MLAs as their supporters.

BJP ally Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) has three MLAs in the assembly.
