Age fraud: Karnataka high court notice to badminton body, SAI as 37 parents file plea

Bengaluru, Dec 1: The Karnataka high court on Friday ordered emergent notices to the Badminton Association of India(BAI), Sports Authority of India(SAI) and Karnataka Badminton Association on a petition filed by 37 parents highlighting rampant age fraud in the sport.

Justice B Veerappa also ordered notices to the ministry of youth affairs and sports, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in the petition filed by Nilesh G Prabhu and 36 others. The petitioners have sought for a direction to the BAI to consider and implement within a timeframe their representation which details several instances of age fraud and suggest some measures to check them.

“Most of the age-fraud cases are with respect to players who are already in the system. The BAI is completely silent on those who have produced delayed birth certificates while obtaining a BAID (Badminton Association Identifier — the identity document provided by BAI) and also cases where the players with BAID have later produced delayed birth certificates and got their date of birth changed,” the petitioners claimed.

“It has become the modus operandi for many players to get their BAID with one date of birth and later change it by furnishing delayed birth certificates and then play in categories open to younger age groups. BAI has not put any checks and balances in place to vet such requests before incorporating the changes,” the petitioners have contended.

According to them, the medical procedures employed to verify/ascertain the age of the players can at best be used to estimate the age and are not helpful in slotting the players in the right age groups, and this is resulting in players continuing to perform in underage categories. This, they say, is undermining the efforts of players in their legitimate age groups and also stealing their opportunities.

It has been also stated that when the BAI approached the SAI seeking funds for participation of the Indian team at Badminton Asia Junior U-15 and U-17 championships 2018, held in October at Mandalay, Myanmar, the SAI had sent back Meiraba Luwang (BAID: 6925), Tasmin Mir (BAID: 14604), Mansi Singh (BAID: 12279) and Bhargavi K (BAID: 5699) for not being of the right age to represent the country in the championship. However, despite SAI’s objection, they were allowed by BAI to play in the tournament.

The petitioners have pointed out that many top players in all age groups have delayed birth certificates and their parents are well-educated and gainfully employed; in fact, some of them are even employed in the sports departments of central/state governments. “It is these very parents who, in cahoots with a few of the unscrupulous coaches/academies, create delayed birth certificates to ensure their children get an undue advantage while playing in the underage categories. In all such instances where delayed birth certificates are registered, the place of birth is stated as “home”, “village”, “in autorickshaw”, and so on,” the petitioners have added.

Bengaluru, Feb 27: Karnataka Chief Minister and veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa turned 78 on Thursday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of leaders greeting him.

Modi hailed Yediyurappa as a "hardworking" chief minister and wished him long life and good health, while several state leaders flocked to his residence and greeted the Lingayat strongman.

"Birthday greetings to Karnataka's hardworking CM @BSYBJP Ji. He is passionately working for the state's progress, especially on farmer welfare and rural development. I pray for his long life and good health," the Prime Minister tweeted.

A large-scale "non-partisan" birthday bash will be held here later in the evening.

The felicitation function will see Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and former chief minister S M Krishna besides Siddaramaiah of Congress and H D Kumaraswamy of JD(S) sharing the stage.

Union Ministers D V Sadananda Gowda, also a former chief minister, Pralhad Joshi and Suresh Angadi will be in attendance.

BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B L Santosh and state party chief Nalin Kumar Kateel are among those who will be gracing the event.

While Santosh will release a felicitation volume in Kannada with 78 articles from a cross-section of people, including politicians, writers, bureaucrats, and spiritual leaders; Siddaramaiah and Kumaraswamy will unveil a coffee table book and documentary respectively.

Yediyurappa, on the eve of his birthday on Wednesday, had said whatever he has achieved is a result of the people's "blessings and faith" and requested well-wishers not to bring bouquets, flowers, shawls, sweets, turbans or any souvenirs to greet him.

The birthday function organised by "Yediyurappa Abhinandana Samiti" (Yediyurappa Felicitation Committee) is being seen in some quarters as an attempt by Yediyurappa and his loyalists to send a message to the party leadership that he was still "strong".

The BJP's current dispensation under Narendra Modi and Amit Shah has retired several senior party leaders who crossed the age of 75.

However, an exception was said to have been made in Yediyurappa's case after the BJP won 25 of 28 seats in the Lok Sabha election under his leadership.

In the 2018 elections, he spearheaded the campaign of the BJP which emerged as the single largest party but fell short of the majority mark following which Congress and JD(S) came to power stitching a post-poll pact.

However, the coalition collapsed in July last year, paving the way for return of Yediyurappa as Chief Minister for the fourth time.

New Delhi, Feb 29: The arsonists, who were allegedly hired by the pro-CAA politicians in Delhi to unleash violence against Muslims, did not even spare the residence of Border Security Force personnel Mohammed Anees.

While the jawan, who has spent three years guarding the borders along Jammu and Kashmir, had hoped that his job profile mentioned on the nameplate hung outside their two-storey house would discourage the vandals, he was proved wrong.

The nameplate on house number 76 in Khas Khajuri Gali clearly mentioned it was the property of a security force personnel who protects India’s borders from foreign invasions. Yet, it was burned down on the afternoon of February 25.

First, the ruthless goons set the vehicles parked outside the jawan’s house on fire, then they torched his home. Stones were also pelted at his house amid slogans of “idhar aa Pakistani, tujhe naagarikta dete hai” (Come here Pakistani, get your citizenship).

Apart from Anees, his father Mohammed Moonis, 55, uncle Mohd Ahmed, 59, and 18-year-old cousin Niha Parveen were in the house. Sensing what was about to go down next, they all escaped from the house, and were helped by paramilitary troops.

Charred remains of the house now stand where the house was till three days ago. In the two lanes of Khajuri Khas near Anees’s house, 35 houses were set on fire.

The loss suffered by the BSF soldier’s family was perhaps greater as they had kept all their life’s savings inside: two weddings in the family were to take place in the next three months.

Niha Parveen was to get married in April and Anees himself was to get married the following month. “All the things we collected all our life, jewellery – two gold necklaces, silver jewellery, it is all gone,” the family said.

“We used to buy jewellery on instalments… used to give money every month and collected this jewellery,” they said. Rs 3 lakh in cash for the wedding arrangements also got burnt along with other valuables and all their belongings.

Khajuri Khas is a Hindu-majority area, but Anees’s family says no neighbour of theirs was involved in the attack. “People came from outside.” Instead, their Hindu neighbours were asking the rioters to leave. They requested them to leave and helped douse the vehicles on fire.
