Aid to Malleswaram blast victim: HC stays contempt case against Home Min

Bengaluru, Jul 20: The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday stayed contempt proceedings initiated against the Home Ministry and the state Home department with regard to the compensation to be paid to Leesha, one of the victims of the Malleswaram bomb blast of April 2013.malleshwara

In a writ appeal filed by the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, a division bench comprising Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar directed the co-ordinate bench hearing the contempt matter not to proceed with the contempt matter during the pendency of the application for condonation of delay in filing the writ appeal.

Leesha, the blast victim had sought for Rs 1 crore compensation towards the injuries caused to her due to the blast. She had contended that she has spent lakhs of rupees on multiple surgeries on her leg and is still unable to walk on her own. A single judge bench had directed the state and the Central governments to consider her request as a rare case.

The appellant contended that compensation sought by the blast victim is very high. Giving any special consideration to any individual victim would set a bad precedent, which is against the Central scheme for assistance to “Civilian Victims/Family of Victims of Terrorist/Communal/LWE (left wing extremism) violence, cross border firing and mine/LED blasts on Indian territory.” The said scheme was revised about a year ago on August 24, 2016 wherein the compensation amount was enhanced to Rs 5 lakh, which would be given for each death or permanent incapacitation to the affected family under the scheme for the incidents that have occurred after August 24, 2016.

The appellant has sought for quashing of the single judge bench order. The division bench ordered notice to Leesha and secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs and, adjourned the hearing.

Bengaluru, May 29: A cost-effective state of the art glove box testing booth for swab collection was inaugurated by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar at Victoria hospital.

Inaugurating the specially designed booth for safer, easier and quicker testing, Medical Education Minister Dr Sudhakar said that the portable booths can be used at border check posts and hot spots.

"The testing method involves the collection of samples from inside a box of aluminium and glass. The suspected corona virus-infected individual, whose samples are being taken, has to walk up to the booth and stand in front of the glass exterior. The healthcare worker inside the kiosk collects the sample and then, follows the sanitisation process before proceeding to take the next sample. The collection process, fully contactless, gets over in five minutes," the Minister said.

Dr Sudhakar also said: "This booth significantly reduces manpower requirement and the need for PPE kits. The main advantages of this procedure are that it needs fewer healthcare workers and strictly adheres to the norms of social distancing. 

The booth is low-cost. Each model costs about Rs 15,000-20,000."
It is also portable and can be mounted on a vehicle and transported to any location.

It can be particularly useful for collecting samples in hot spots and border checkpoints, he added.

Mangaluru, Apr 23: Playing the role of a good samaritan, the owner of a commercial complex and houses has waived off a month’s rent at Panemangalore in Bantwal.

B H Complex owner Mohammed Hassan has waived the rent of 21 shops and 12 houses in the complex. Due to Lockdown, people are without jobs and are struggling to eke out a living and Mr Hassan's good gesture helps them.

Hailing from Barimaru, Mr Hassan, who was working in foreign country, has come down and settled here. He had constructed houses and commercial complex and was living on the rent he was receiving.

Kanhangad, May 10: Kasaragod district has become free from COVID-19 on Sunday.

The last remaining patient has been tested negative for coronavirus, said district medical officer Dr. A. V. Ramdas.

He added that the officials are proud to have been able to cure all 178 COVID-19 patients in the district.
