AIFF U-17 boys thrash Little Angels to win Subroto Cup title

October 17, 2015

New Delhi, Oct 17: The AIFF Academy boys outplayed Little Angels Paradise Secondary School of Manipur 4-1 to clinch the Subroto Cup U-17 title at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Friday.

AIFFThe AIFF Academy cadets, who came into the final on the back of a 2-0 win against Indonesia, were off to a shaky start as the Manipuris took the lead in the sixth minute.

Not to be deterred, the AIFF U-17 boys played an aggressive game, creating chances at regular intervals. In the 11th minute Edmund found Bedeshwor in an attempt to release him on goal but the latter was tackled by the Litte Angels defence.

Seconds later, the Manipuri goalkeeper pulled off a perfectly timed save, thus denying Bodo from getting past him. By then, the AIFF boys were slowly taking over the reins and the crowd was treated to some exquisite through balls.

In the 18th minute, Edmund wriggled past the Manipuri defence, but the lanky forward's shot missed the target by inches.

Eventually, the AIFF U-17 colts equalised in the 25th minute as Jaya went on a lung-bursting run before essaying a delicious cross which was tapped home by Bodo.

The Indian colts came close to taking the lead almost immediately after the break, but Bodo's shot went agonizingly wide. Seven minutes later, the AIFF boys wasted another brilliant opportunity as Bedeshwor was unable to convert a cross from the right flank with the goal at his mercy.

With the AIFF colts piling on the pressure and dominating possession, attacks on the Manipuri defence came aplenty. An Ashraf free-kick in the 46th minute from the edge of the penalty box flew inches over the bar, after ricocheting off the Manipuri wall.

It was only a matter of time the AIFF colts took the lead and they did so in style in the 54th minute. Rahul Yadav unleashed a swirling shot from 25 yards which went past the Little Angels custodian.

Minutes later, the AIFF colts increased the lead as Edmund slotted the ball past the Manipuri custodian.

The AIFF cadets scored their fourth when Nijwm converted from the spot.

New Delhi, Mar 12: No foreign player will be available for this year's IPL till April 15 due to visa restrictions imposed by the government to contain the novel coronavirus threat, a top BCCI source told PTI on Thursday, casting fresh doubts on the fate of the event.

"The foreign players who play in the IPL come under the Business Visa category. As per the government's directive, they can't come till April 15," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The government issued fresh advisory with a ban on all existing foreign visas, except a few categories like diplomatic and employment, till April 15 in the wake of new positive cases of novel coronavirus in the country.

India has reported 60 positive cases in the outbreak which has led to over 4,000 deaths globally.

The fate of the IPL itself will be decided on March 14 at the event's Governing Council meeting in Mumbai. "All decisions will be taken by the GC in Mumbai," the source said.

Having the IPL, starting March 29, played in empty stadiums is an option being explored.

Jun 20: Bengaluru FC (BFC) have signed Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva for a one-year deal, the ISL club said in a statement on Saturday.

As per the agreement, BFC have the option of extending Silva's contract for another year.

The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent the better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China.

Silva, who also operates on the wing, became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League.

His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club.

The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn't materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move.

"I've signed with Bengaluru FC because I want to be a champion and this is a club that is always after titles. I have that opportunity once again at BFC. I want to make the club and its fans happy. I have been following the club for some time now because we were in talks a while ago. And I liked what I saw. I am looking forward to making my way to Bengaluru and am excited to meet my new teammates, the fans and embrace the city," said Silva.

Silva, thus, became BFC's first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals with Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat said Silva's addition was an important one, given his penchant for scoring.

"Cleiton has a proven track record when it comes to scoring and this is an area we needed to strengthen on the squad. The goals aside, he even has an eye for a quality final pass and we're looking forward to working with him," he said.
