Air India flights delayed as VIPs fight

January 10, 2016

New Delhi/Bhopal, Jan 10: An Odisha MP sitting on a midnight dharna and passengers venting anger at Madhya Pradesh PWD Minister Sartaj Singh accused of using his influence to reschedule a flight set the Delhi airport on the boil.

airindiaThe airport witnessed high drama on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday with Bhubhaneswar-bound passengers protesting against Air India for rescheduling their flight to Bhopal, which they felt was done at the behest of the minister and two judges.

The fliers had reached the airport at 7:30 pm on Friday but were informed that the flight would be delayed. It would have landed in Bhubhaneswar around 9-9:30 pm but it reached the destination only at 4:30 am on Saturday after the ordeal.

All hell broke lose when the Air India authorities on Friday late night announced the boarding for Bhopal after initially cancelling the service. The Bhubhaneswar fliers were in for a rude shock when they found out that pilots and crew assigned for their flight were being shifted to the Bhopal flight.

BJD MP Tathagata Satpathy, who was flying to Bhubhaneswar, sat on a dharna.

“It is sad that Air India is behaving like this. Just because there were some VIPs, one BJP minister and two judges, the Bhopal flight will go but the Bhubhaneswar flight will not go,” he said.

He, however, did not name Singh or the judges.

Two international flights, a British Airways flight to London and an Indigo flight to Dubai were also delayed.

Other fliers got into an argument with the airline officials, who assured that they would be flying soon to their destinations. Senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, who was also flying to Bhubhaneswar, tweeted, “It’s close to 1 am; neither Bhopal nor Bhubaneshwar AI flights have left; dharna continues; this is India’s national carrier!”

Meanwhile, Singh, who was in the eye of the storm, denied his involvement in the episode. “I did not speak to Air India top bosses. When I was talking to Air India officials to understand why a decision to cancel Bhopal flight was taken due to shortage of pilots, an MP and a co-passenger gathered support from other passengers and politicised the entire issue,” Singh told Deccan Herald in Bhopal.

Air India denied any wrongdoing, saying: “At no time did AI give any preference to any particular flight. The available crew’s duty time remaining as per regulations was checked and was scheduled for flights based on time and sequence.”

Lucknow, Jul 2: Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti Thursday appeared in person before a special court here conducting trial in the 1992 Babri mosque demolition case.

The special CBI court is currently recording the statements of 32 accused under CrPC section 313 (court's power to examine the accused), a stage in the trial that follows the examination of prosecution witnesses.

The 61-year-old saffron clad BJP leader is the 19th accused to depose before the court in the over 27-year-old case. Thirteen other alleged accused, including former deputy prime minister LK Advani and senior BJP leaders MM Joshi and Kalyan Singh are yet to be examined at this stage. Their lawyers have indicated to the CBI court that they prefer to appear through video conferencing.

The mosque in Ayodhya was demolished in December 1992 by 'kar sevaks' who claimed that an ancient Ram temple had stood on the same site. The CBI court is conducting day-to-day hearings to complete the trial by August 31, as directed by the Supreme Court.

Ghaziabad, Jul 28: Days ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, Nand Kishore Gurjar, a BJP MLA from Loni assembly constituency in Ghaziabad, has stoked controversy as he asked people celebrating the festival to "sacrifice their children instead of animals" on the occasion. He also claimed that "meat spreads coronavirus" so people should not be allowed to sacrifice innocent animals.

"People who want to sacrifice on Eid should sacrifice their children. I will not let people consume meat and alcohol in Loni. We will not let people sacrifice innocent animals because meat spreads coronavirus," the BJP legislator said while speaking to reporters.

"The way people have followed the guidelines of the government by not offering prayers and namaz at temples and mosques to contain COVID-19, in the same way, they must not give the sacrifice of animals on this Eid," he added.

"Earlier, sacrifices of animals used to be done in Sanatan Dharam as well. However, now coconut is offered instead. I request the Muslim brothers not to give 'qurbani' of animals. We will stop those who will perform the ritual animal sacrifice. We will not let this happen in Loni," he said.

Idukki, Aug 7: Several people lost their lives and dozens of tea estate workers are feared trapped under soil in Kerala’s Munnar after torrential rains triggered a massive landslide on today.

As many as five bodies have been recovered and rescue workers are fighting inclement weather to remove the debris.

According to rescue workers, four lanes of quarters and a church are buried under mud and around 80 people are feared trapped.

Seven people have been rescued so far and shifted to the hospital.

Sources said a portion of Pettimudi came crashing down on the workers colony with a deafening roar in the wee hours of Friday.

As people were sleeping in the quarters, there was little time to escape.

Further, with the Periyavara bridge being washed away, it became all the more difficult for rescue workers to reach the spot.

The construction of a new temporary Periyavara bridge however, is underway.

The bridge was previously destructed during the deluge of August 2018. Later during the north west monsoons and the south west monsoon of 2019, it suffered damage again.

The present bridge, which got damaged on Thursday after Kannimala river levels rose, was constructed under the leadership of Coir fed.

Although a new concrete bridge has been constructed near the temporary bridge in Periyavara, vehicle  movement has not been possible because the authorities are yet to build its approach via road.

The new bridge is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 4.75 crore from Devikulam MLA S Rajendran's fund.

The entire area has been cut off from outside world and communication networks have also crashed.

Teams of Fire and Rescue personnel, NDRF, revenue officials, estate workers and police are struggling to conduct rescue operations.

Meanwhile, District collector H Dhineshan said a team of rescue personnel was sent to Pettymudy after he was briefed about the mishap and search operations to locate and rescue people are underway.

Facilities have been arranged at the hospitals nearby to provide necessary treatment facilities to the people being rescued.
