Airline passenger suffers burns after headphones catch fire during flight from Beijing to Melbourne

Mar 15: The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has issued a passenger warning after a woman's headphones caught fire during a recent flight from Beijing to Melbourne. The airline passenger suffered burns to her face and hands after her battery-powered headphones exploded while she was sleeping during the long-haul flight.

The woman, who was not identified, said she was listening to music when she dozed off and was awoken by the sound of a loud explosion about two hours into the flight.

"As I went to turn around I felt burning on my face," she said, the ATSB reported. "I just grabbed my face which caused the headphones to go around my neck. I continued to feel burning so I grabbed them off and threw them on the floor. They were sparking and had small amounts of fire.

"As I went to stamp my foot on them the flight attendants were already there with a bucket of water to pour on them. They put them into the bucket at the rear of the plane."

Officials identified the lithium-ion battery in the device as the likely cause of the fire, but did not identify the device's brand. The battery and cover had both melted and stuck to the floor of the plane, authorities said.

During the rest of the flight, passengers were forced to endure the smell of burned plastic, burnt electronics and burnt hair in the cabin, the ATSB reported.

"People were coughing and choking the entire way home," the woman said.

The ATSB warning cautioned travellers about the dangers of using battery-powered devices on board and asked passengers with battery-operated devices to stow them properly and keep spares in their carry-on, not checked baggage.

"As the range of products using batteries grows, the potential for in-flight issues increases," the ATSB said. A spokesman for the ATSB declined to specify the brand and model of the headphones or batteries involved in the incident, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"The ATSB has assessed that it is the batteries, as the power source, that caught on fire and are therefore the issue," the spokesman said. "All batteries contain stored energy and are therefore potentially risky."

The incident comes after Samsung recalled millions of Galaxy Note 7 phones last year following multiple incidents of the device's batteries exploding or catching fire. The Federal Aviation Administration soon banned the smartphones from being brought onto aeroplanes in October.

Samsung was forced to eventually discontinue the line and recently concluded that the fires were caused by two battery flaws rather than the devices themselves.

Over the past few years, there have also been numerous incidents involving battery-operated devices catching fire or exploding on planes.

In June last year, a passenger's phone got stuck in the reclining mechanism of his seat during a Qantas flight from Los Angeles to New York. While searching for the device, the seat was accidentally moved crushing the device. It soon began hissing and emitting smoke before catching fire.

In August, passengers were forced to disembark from a plane in Sydney after smoke was seen coming from a traveller's hand luggage in the overhead locker. It was later discovered that lithium batteries had ignited.

Unnao, Feb 26: Ever heard of someone wishing a 'bright future' for the dead? In a bizarre incident in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, a village head issued a death certificate with the wish for an elderly man who had died last month.

The incident took place in the Sirwariya village in Asoha block where an elderly person Laxmi Shankar died after a prolonged illness on January 22.

His son went to the village head Babulal and requested him to issue a death certificate that he needed for some financial transactions.

Babulal not only issued the death certificate, but also 'wished' 'a bright future for the deceased' on the document.

The village head wrote in the death certificate -- "Main inke ujjwal bhavishya ki kaamna karta hoon (I wish him a bright future)."

The letter went viral on the social media on Monday after which the village head apologised for the error and issued a new death certificate.

Mumbai, Jan 27: The country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Monday said it has increased prices of select models by up to Rs 10,000 with immediate effect to offset the impact of rising input costs.

The price change varies across models and ranges up to 4.7 per cent (ex-showroom Delhi) and are effective from January, 27 2020, MSI said in a statement.

The price of entry level model Alto range has gone up in the range of Rs 9,000-6,000, S-Presso between Rs 1,500 to 8,000, WagonR between Rs 1,500 and Rs 4,000.

The company has also increased the price of its multi purpose vehicle Ertiga between Rs 4,000-10,000, Baleno by Rs 3,000 to 8,000 and XL6 by up to Rs 5,000 (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).

Currently, the company sells a range of vehicles starting from entry-level small car Alto to premium multi purpose vehicle XL6 with price ranging from Rs 2.89 lakh to Rs 11.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Kochi, May 22: During the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown, Kerala recorded the highest number of cyber attacks followed by Punjab and Tamil Nadu, a study by anti-virus software firm K7 Computing said on Thursday.

In a statement issued in Chennai, the company said its K7 Computing's Cyber Threat Report, a comprehensive analysis of cyber attacks during the lockdown has found that Kerala recorded the highest number of cyber attacks during this period. The report analyses various cyber attacks within India during the pandemic and reveals that threat actors targeted the state with COVID-themed attacks aimed at exploiting user trust.

In Kerala, regions like Kottayam, Kannur, Kollam, and Kochi saw the highest hits with 462, 374, 236, and 147 attacks respectively, while the state as a whole saw around 2,000 attacks during the period - the highest thus far in the country.

This was followed by Punjab with 207 attacks and Tamil Nadu with 184 attacks, the company said.

The sudden surge in the frequency of attacks witnessed from February 2020 to mid-April 2020 indicates that scamsters across the world were exploiting the widespread panic around coronavirus at both the individual and corporate level.

These attacks aimed to compromise computers and mobile devices to gain access to users' confidential data, banking details, and cryptocurrency accounts.

The key threats seen during this period ranged from phishing attacks to rogue apps disguised as COVID-19 information apps that targeted users' sensitive data. Phishing attacks were noticed more in Tier-II and Tier-III cities while the metros fared better. Smaller cities saw over 250 attacks being blocked per 10,000 users.

Users from Ghaziabad and Lucknow seem to have faced almost 6 and 4 times the number of attacks as Bengaluru users.

According to the statement, a majority of the recorded attacks were phishing attacks with sophisticated campaigns that could easily snare even the most educated users. These attacks were aimed at heightening users' fears and creating a sense of urgency to take action.

K7 Labs noticed phishing attacks where scamsters posed as representatives of the United States Department of Treasury, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the company said.

Users were encouraged to visit links that would automatically download malware on the host computer such as the Agent Tesla keylogger or Lokibot information-stealing malware, infamous banking Trojans such as Trickbot or Zeus Sphinx, and even disastrous ransomware.

Other attacks included infected COVID-19 Android apps like CoronaSafetyMask that scam users with promises of masks for an upfront payment; the spyware app Project Spy; and seemingly genuine apps that are infected with dangerous malware like banking Trojans such as Ginp, Anubis and Cerberus.

"Covid-19 has created an ideal situation for various threat actors to target individuals and enterprises alike. The panic caused by the stringent lockdown measures and rapid spread of this virus has left many people looking for more information on the situation," J. Kesavardhanan, Founder and CEO of K7 Computing was quoted as saying in the statement.

"Threat actors exploit this fear to their advantage and scam users into downloading malicious software and divulging sensitive information like banking codes. The need to be cyber cautious has never been greater. This is more so in the case of corporates who have adopted a work from home policy hurriedly without adequate cyber hygiene. We have seen an increase in attacks on enterprises and SME employees as well," he added.

Such attacks are expected to continue till normalcy returns. Social engineering attacks targeted at winning users' trust will gain momentum.

Healthcare institutions, well-known government offices, and international organisations will continue to be a prime target throughout the pandemic, the statement said.
