Akbar Moideen Thumbay Inducted into AUS Alumni Wall of Fame

Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President - Healthcare Division and board member of the Dubai-based international conglomerate Thumbay Group, has been inducted into the Alumni Wall of Fame of the American University of Sharjah (AUS), in recognition of his merit and professional accomplishments. The formal announcement was made at the at the University’s 10th Annual Alumni Reunion Dinner on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at the AUS campus.

The event, graced by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Sharjah and President of AUS, saw the participation of more than 2,000 AUS alumni from all over the world. It is the event’s annual tradition to recognize those alumni who made a difference during their time at AUS as well as those who have achieved great success in their careers, by adding them to the Alumni Wall of Fame. The honorees are chosen from a pool of candidates nominated by their fellow alumni.

Born on 18th March 1984 to Mr. Thumbay Moideen, a third generation business entrepreneur and Mrs. Zohra Moideen, a renowned artist in Mangalore, India, Akbar Moideen Thumbay completed his secondary education from the elite Indian academic institution, The Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty. After moving to the U.A.E. at the age of 15, he continued his studies with the International School of Choueifat in the UAE, and completed his graduation in Mechanical Engineering from American University of Sharjah (AUS). He later went on to continue his postgraduate studies in Hospital Management from the renowned SDA Boccioni School of Management, Milan, Italy.

After completing his studies and spending the first few months with a New York based company, Akbar joined Thumbay Group, the multinational business conglomerate founded by his father Thumbay Moideen, on a full-time basis. He demonstrated extraordinary business acumen and initiative from the word go. His vision, enthusiasm and confidence brought him greater responsibilities, and he was elevated to the position of the Vice-President of Thumbay Group’s Healthcare Division, on 1 November 2015.

Akbar looks after operations of all Thumbay Hospitals in Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai and Hyderabad (India), as well as the networks of Thumbay Clinics, and Thumbay Labs throughout the UAE and in India. Under the banner of the Retail Division, he initiated Nutri Plus Vita, a series of health nutrition and wellness store, in addition to the pre-existing branches of Zo & Mo Opticals and Thumbay Pharmacy located across the UAE. He is also credited of being the brain behind the Thumbay Marketing and Distribution Company (TMDC). One of Akbar’s key initiatives has been to promote Thumbay Hospitals in the medical tourism segment in an aggressive manner. The hospital’s world-class healthcare services and excellent facilities have brought in patients from as far as Africa and Southern Europe, seeking treatments from executive check-ups to complicated surgeries.

Akbar was honored with the ‘Champion of Change’ Award at the 7th Annual MENA HR Excellence Awards 2015 in recognition of his leadership, strategic thinking and key management decisions that benefited the organization. He was also featured in the twenty five young Business Leaders in UAE, profiled in a coffee table book GEN NEXT INDIANS. He also received the award for Thumbay Hospital being featured as the Best Medical Tourism Hospital in the Middle-East by The New Economy, a leading newspaper in the UK, in 2013. He has delivered talks at various conferences and seminars held in the Middle-East and Europe, which includes the “International Medical Travel Exhibition and Conference” held in Oman in April 2013, “Borderlines in Healthcare” event in May 2014 in Austria, Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government for the Leadership & Entrepreneurship Series 2016 and the AUS Enterprising Youth Forum at the American University of Sharjah in April 2016.

I am one of the old student who have done my schooling in Badria School Mangalore. Its been know fact that the school is not doing fwell financially. I kindly request Thumbay group to extend some help to revamp the school as per modern education system. Since Thumbay group is connected to Muslim educational institutions, it would of great help for the schools like Badria.
Once again i request thumbay group to extend the helping hand.

I would kindly request Thumbay group to help out Badria School which is going under loss past few years. This is very old school in Mangalore. This is undertaken by the Muslim educational Trust. The school badly needs be revamped as per present education system.
Its kind request from all the students who have studied in this precious school & we are proud to be Badrian's. hope the Thumbat group will take some steps to improve the school ASAP

Doha: Selvam aged 46 son of Subramanian hailing from Panakulam Village, Alangudi, Pudukkottai District in Tamilnadu province who worked as a technician, died in Qatar on April 24.

Due to challenging situation prevailing in both India & Qatar for body repatriation services, especially in Covid-19 atmosphere, Family is unable to progress further for past 2 months. At his stage Family of the deceased met Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Pudukkottai office bearers and requested to intervene and help out, and also agreed to bury the body in Qatar itself.

Hence, SDPI delegates communicated with well-known Indian Expatriate welfare Organization - Qatar Indian Social Forum (QISF). QISF General Secretary Basheer Ahamed, Secretary Abdullatheef Madikeri and team collected the required documents from the family of the deceased and managed to clear all the necessary formalities from the police department, Health Department, Embassy of India and Hamad Medical Corporation within a short period of time and arranged for a peaceful burial of Mr. Selvam in Dukhan cemetery.

Dubai, May 20: Dubai-based Karnataka Sports and Cultural Club’s humanitarian services in charge Naseer Karaje team have appreciated the efforts of Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Mangaluru Airport director, NGOs of Mangaluru, and MLA for extending a royal welcome to second batch of repatriates from Dubai that landed at Mangaluru Airport on May 18.

There was so much of confusions when 1st batch of repatriation flight landed in Mangaluru airport on 12th May due to lack of proper arrangements and co ordination.

This time due to proper arrangements and special supervision by the DC everything was driven smoothly. It has given a confidence to all the Manglurean expats of Dubai in returning to their native places, the KSCC said.

Kuwait: State of Karnataka is enriched with Daasa culture, which had contributed immensely to its literature, culture, art & philosophy. Daasa tradition in Karnataka was part of the Bhakti movement which flourished from around 15th century and it extended considerable spiritual influence over the masses. Kuwait Kannada Koota, a socio-cultural association for the people of Karnataka in Kuwait, organized its annual Daasotsava on 14th February 2020 in remembrance of these saints, thereby displaying the rich cultural heritage of the state. 

The program started with a warm welcome address by Mrs. Spoorthy Kamath, convener of cultural committee. Divine invocation prayer by Mrs. Vasantha Ashok and Mrs. Sandhya Arun set the trend for the event. This was followed by lighting of the traditional lamp by the 2020 executive committee, comprising of President Mr. Rajesh Vittal, Vice President Mr. Sandeep Chabba, General Secretary Mr. Praveen Kumar Shetty and Treasurer Mr. Pradeep Rao. President, while welcoming the gathering, spoke about the importance of Daasas in Kannada literature & history and briefed about the series of upcoming programs. Cultural programs started with fancy dress competition by Koota children comprising of all age group starting from infants to elder kids. This program stole the show as the efforts & time invested by children and their parents were clearly visible. 

2019 executive committee was felicitated by the current committee for wonderfully managing Koota affairs & programs. This was followed by the release of Koota magazine “Marala Mallige", comprising of informative articles, drawings, poems etc., entirely contributed by the association members. Event’s main attraction “Vrindavana Leelavarana", a colorful dance drama spectacularly portrayed by 54 Koota children, was very well appreciated & received by the attendees. Association children who successfully completed 10th and 12th were felicitated as a token of encouragement. Executive committee gave away prizes to Kids who excelled in the stage competitions held earlier. Audience was treated to a divine and melodious Bhajan program conducted astutely by the ladies & men. Koota women performed Bhajan Kolata, along with ladies bhajan, in a well-coordinated manner. Vote of thanks was proposed by the secretary of Koota, thanking those who contributed for the success of the event. Another attraction was a quiz competition “Rasa Prashne", conducted efficiently between the programs, by Mr. Mahesh Shiramgond. 

The whole event was planned and executed astutely by the cultural committee under the leadership of Convener, Mrs. Spoorthy Kamath. Public Relations Committee, led by Mrs. Suparna Dambal, welcomed the members in a vibrant & colorful way, showcasing a beautifully erected divine mantap. The event was sponsored by Unimoni, LIC HFL, VSPL, Geetherb, Kotak Life Insurance, Joy Alukkas, Lulu Hypermarket & Total Environment. The program ended with a sumptuous satvik lunch, sponsored by the senior Koota member, Mr. Ramachandran Seetharaman.
