All are equal before the law: Saudi Arabia executes PRINCE for murder

October 19, 2016

Riyadh, Oct 19: A Saudi prince was executed in Riyadh on Tuesday after a court found him guilty of shooting dead a fellow Saudi national, official media reported, in a rare example of a ruling family member subjected to the death penalty in the modern world.

lawPrince Turki bin Saud al-Kabir had pleaded guilty to shooting Adel al-Mohaimeed after a brawl, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement on state news agency SPA.

Members of Saudi Arabia's ruling family have global reputation. The last prominent case of a royal family member's execution was that of Faisal bin Musaid al-Saud, who assassinated his uncle, King Fasial, in 1975.

A list made by a western news agency says that the prince is the 134th individual to be executed this year. The Interior ministry said that it would ensure to everyone that the government was "keen to keep order, stabilize security and bring about justice through implementing the rules prescribed by Allah".

The victim's family denied offers of 'blood money' and demanded justice instead.

On social media, some Saudis said that they never imagined such a thing would happen while others said it indicated the quality of their justice system.

A prominent Saudi lawyer tweeted saying, "The greatest thing is that the citizen sees the law applied to everyone, and that there are not big people and other small people."

The royal family is estimated to be in the thousands. While they receive a monthly stipend, not all of them hold important government posts.

“The government.. is keen to keep order, stabilise security and bring about justice through implementing the rules prescribed by Allah...,” said the ministry statement.

Bengaluru, May 9: The bar owners in Karnataka, while welcoming the state government's decision to allow takeaway sales of liquor, said that the move is not going to benefit them much.

Venkatesh Babu, a Bengaluru-based bar owner said, "We welcome this move, our bar was closed for two months due to coronavirus crisis. We have been facing losses since then."

The owner of Pingara Bar and Restaurant, Shivamogga said, "The government has said that is for parcel only and that too at MRP. There is no benefit to our business. We are only clearing the existing stock. They have given us time till May 17 and are not even giving us fresh stock. We are only allowed to sell what we have already."

Karnataka government in its Friday order allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from May 9 till May 17, the day the third phase of lockdown is slated to end.

Bidar, Mar 4: The Principal District and Sessions Court in Bidar, on Tuesday, granted conditional bail to five functionaries of Shaheen School management — Abdul Qadeer, Allauddin Pasha, Mehtab Sait, Bilal Inamdar and Abdul Khaleq — who moved anticipatory bail in a sedition case slapped against their school recently.

Conditions

Senior advocate B.T. Venkatesh from Bengaluru argued for the petitioners. Managoli Premavati Mallikarjuna granted bail on certain conditions, including execution of personal bond of ₹2 lakh each.

The sedition case was filed against the Shaheen School management for its children staging a play as part of their annual day celebrations on January 21, in which a character had allegedly delivered a dialogue against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While Nazbunnisa, the mother of the child who had allegedly delivered the dialogue in the play, and Fareeda Begum, the headmistress of the school, were arrested, they were subsequently released on bail last month.
