All eyes on Harbhajan Singh as cricketers gather for training camp at Eden Gardens

June 6, 2015

Kolkata, Jun 6: All eyes would be on off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who is making a comeback after two years, as the Indian Test cricketers will assemble at the Eden Gardens for a training camp ahead of their short tour to Bangladesh.

Harbhajan-Singh-001The most successful Indian offspinner, who last played a Test versus Australia in Hyderabad in 2013, has been recalled for the one-off Test in Bangladesh from June 10-14 replacing left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

The Indian Test cricketers led by Virat Kohli flew in batches today as the Test team also would assemble after the series in Australia earlier in January.

With Harbhajan back in fold and India already having the regular offie in Ravichandran Ashwin, it would be interesting to see whether Kohli go for a two off-spinner line-up for the Test at Fatullah in the outskirts of Dhaka.

No seniors were rested for the Test as Kohli, who has been made Test skipper after the retirement of MS Dhoni from the longer format, will be seen at the helm with team director Ravi Shastri who has been retained for the upcoming tour.

Middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who was playing for Yorkshire in the County Championship in England, will also return for the series and look to capitalise on the conditions in Bangladesh.

Local lad Wriddhiman Saha is also set to take over regular duties behind the stumps after Dhoni's retirement, while there was also a call-up for Karn Sharma.

The fitness camp and training was originally scheduled in the morning but because of the high heat it has been postponed to 3.30pm, said a CAB official.

"The cricketers will now have a gym and pool session at the team hotel in the morning," he added.

The team will have another camp at the Eden Gardens on Sunday followed by a pre-departure news conference before the team departure at 7.45 am on Monday.

The city is also scheduled to host the three iconic former cricketers, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, the newly inducted members of the cricket advisory committee which is slated to meet for the first time tomorrow at BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya's residence.

The committee is expected to play a role in finalising the next India coach and also set road map for the team.

Karachi, Apr 14: Disappointed with Kapil Dev's response, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi has backed his former teammate Shoaib Akhtar's proposal for an ODI series against India to help raise funds for the less privileged in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Afridi told reporters in Kohat that he was surprised by the comments of Indian great Kapil and former IPL chairman, Rajeev Shukla, who outrightly dismissed Akhtar's suggestion.

"The entire world is fighting against coronavirus and we need unity in our region to defeat this common enemy. Such negative comments don't help at all," Afridi said.

"I don't see anything wrong with Shoaib Akhtar's suggestion for Pakistan and India to play cricket.

"Kapil's reaction has surprised me. I expected better from him and feel one should not talk like this in these crisis times."

Afridi said that he was also surprised at some of the "negative comments" Indian stars Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh's support for his charity foundation attracted.

"Sport is supposed to bring people together and build bridges. It is pretty disappointing."

Afridi also urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to order the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to restore departmental cricket in the country to save the livelihood of hundreds of domestic players.

"I myself played for the departments and witnessed how departments really salvaged domestic cricket in Pakistan and helped it thrive decade after decade.

"Departments take good care of the players and spend lots of money on the development of domestic cricket, so how can departmental cricket hurt Pakistan cricket," questioned Afridi.

He also questioned the PCB and the Pakistan team management for making a fitness of players a big issue.

"They are always talking about hard training and fitness tests. I have never seen fitness tests taken with such frequency and the result is that many players are getting injured and many of them are also unhappy with the situation."

New Delhi, Mar 12: No foreign player will be available for this year's IPL till April 15 due to visa restrictions imposed by the government to contain the novel coronavirus threat, a top BCCI source told PTI on Thursday, casting fresh doubts on the fate of the event.

"The foreign players who play in the IPL come under the Business Visa category. As per the government's directive, they can't come till April 15," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The government issued fresh advisory with a ban on all existing foreign visas, except a few categories like diplomatic and employment, till April 15 in the wake of new positive cases of novel coronavirus in the country.

India has reported 60 positive cases in the outbreak which has led to over 4,000 deaths globally.

The fate of the IPL itself will be decided on March 14 at the event's Governing Council meeting in Mumbai. "All decisions will be taken by the GC in Mumbai," the source said.

Having the IPL, starting March 29, played in empty stadiums is an option being explored.

Sydney, Mar 14: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson has been placed under 24-hour isolation amid the fears of coronavirus after he reported a sore throat following the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series against Australia in Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which the hosts won by 71 runs.

"In accordance with recommended health protocols, Lockie Ferguson has been placed in isolation at the team hotel for the next 24 hours after reporting a sore throat at the end of the first ODI," said New Zealand Cricket in a statement.

"Once the test results are received and diagnosed, his return to the team can be determined," it added.

Earlier, Australian fast bowler, Kane Richardson was also tested for the coronavirus, after suffering from a sore throat on Thursday. That saw him left out of the squad for Friday's game but the test was negative.
