Allow us to drive, women urge Mufti

Women_urge_MuftiDammam, Feb 5: The head of the Board of Senior Ulema has received a letter from women activists asking him that women should be allowed to drive, Al-Hayat daily reported.

A source, who preferred to remain unidentified, said the letter was received by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Asheikh’s office. It is not known whether the letter was referred to the board itself.

He pointed out that the committee reviews queries on a periodical basis and replies to senders using all communication means.

“The committee does not automatically reject any queries submitted to them and replies to any questions that concern Shariah,” he said.

The letter was submitted by supporters of the Oct. 26 campaign for women driving, which said they have yet to receive any reply.

They said that preventing women from driving has more disadvantages than allowing them to drive.

In addition, the government has the authority to implement laws and regulations to overcome any disadvantages, they said.

These activists pointed out that they were asked to refer their demands to official channels and so they submitted the letter to the Grand Mufti. The letter stated that anything that harmed women’s liberty should be tackled through a legal request that must be considered by anyone entrusted with such matters.

Enlisting the support of scholars is the right course of action because it is in line with Shariah.

The letter said that preventing women from driving has resulted in more hardships for them and their children as they have to depend on drivers who are strangers living in their houses and whose real motives are not known.

The activists also reviewed penalties that women who took to wheel were subjected to such as detainment and confiscation of their vehicles as well as the threat of prison and fines.

Mar 24: Saudi Arabia has recorded its first death from the coronavirus in a 51-year-old Afghani resident, Health Ministry spokesman Mohammed Abdelali told a televised news conference on Tuesday.

The man's health deteriorated quickly after reporting to a hospital emergency room in the city of Medina and he died on Monday night, Abdelali said.

Apr 9: The UAE Cabinet, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, adopted a resolution to grant paid leave to select categories of employees at the federal government.

This move is part of a series of precautionary measures and procedures taken by the UAE government to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control.

The resolution stipulates that married employees of the federal government may take fully paid leave to take care of their children below the age of 16. The age condition shall not apply to people of determination, as well as in cases where a spouse is subject to self-isolation or quarantine that requires no contact with family members, upon a decision from the Ministry of Health and Prevention.

The resolution also applies to employees whose spouses work in vital health-related occupations, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and other medical jobs that require exposure to infected people, as well as employees of quarantine centres, throughout the emergency period witnessed by the country.

Pursuant to the resolution, the relevant ministry or federal authority may ask employees holding essential technical occupations to work remotely instead of taking leave.

The resolution was issued in line with the UAE government's keenness to support employees and provide them with a safe and healthy working environment, as well as to protect the health and safety of government employees and their families, during the current crisis that requires greater efforts, additional working hours, and in some cases, exposure to infected people.

Beirut, Aug 4: A massive explosion has shaken the Lebanese capital of Beirut, with a very high number of casualties expected.

A warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a huge explosion, Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Several smaller explosions were heard before the bigger one occurred.

Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s General Security, said that “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the bigger explosion, with a colossal shock wave seen traveling fast across several hundreds of meters and shrouding the area in thick smoke.

The blast left enormous material damage to the surrounding buildings and structures. But it was not immediately known how big an area was affected.

There was also no immediate casualty count. Graphic amateur video from the scene showed bodies strewn on the ground, with their clothes blown off.

The NNA said rescue operations were underway. Ambulances were seen heading toward the scene in central Beirut.

Lebanese LBC television channel quoted Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan as saying that the blast had caused a “very high number of injuries” and “extensive damage.”

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said an unspecified number of firefighters dispatched to extinguish the initial fire had been killed in the explosion.

“As they were putting out the fire, the explosion took place and we’ve [lost them],” he said, breaking down on live TV.

The explosion comes at a time when the Arab country is passing through its worst economic and financial crisis in decades, and amid rising tensions with Israel.
