Always wanted to prove that women can wrestle too: Paige

Mumbai, Feb 15: She came to WWE at a time when female wrestlers were mostly considered divas but Paige broke the stereotype, fighting perceptions and drawing home a larger point: that women can wrestle too.

Paige, real name Saraya-Jade Bevis, has emerged as one of the biggest female wrestlers in WWE but she says initially she did not realise how "male dominated" the sport was.

"But the WWE never held the women back. It was actually more of the fans not taking them very seriously. They wanted to see more male characters, many years ago. That's what they wanted. It was a male dominated sport," Paige told news agency.

The 26-year-old says things were dramatically different when she was in FCW (Florida Championship Wrestling).

"There were only five women there and 70 men. There was a lot of struggle but WWE believed in us so much."

Paige is considered a key figure in bringing 'women's revolution' in the ring, aided by her NXT Women's Championship in 2013 which gave a platform to several other female wrestlers to show their talent.

"When I got into the ring with the them, I wanted to prove myself and prove to the WWE, the fans and the male wrestlers that the girls can have really good matches and sometimes even better," she says.

"It was my kind of my mission from the get go to start doing that... A lot of the girls started to come out of their comfort zone and more female wrestlers were getting signed too. Now of course there's a revolution which is incredible," she adds.

Paige now has her life chronicled on the big screen in "Fighting With My Family", a rousing comedy about dreams and identity directed by Stephan Merchat, co-writer and co-helmer of the popular British sitcom "The Office".

The film shows how Paige, who was born into a tight-knit wrestling family, is ecstatic when she and her brother Zak get an opportunity to try out for WWE but only Paige earns a spot in the competitive training programme and she must now leave her family and face the new, cut-throat world alone.

Paige says growing up in a family of wrestlers was "normal" for her but often people around her were left amused.

"Zak and I have been surrounded by wrestlers our entire life. Everyone else thought it was a peculiar thing, it was kind of weird. But we didn't care. We loved wrestling and didn't care what people thought. That's also what the movie talks about: we didn't care about people's opinions," she says.

The film features actor Florence Pugh as Paige and has been produced by Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, who also features in a special appearance.

Johnson is by far the most popular WWE superstar, who branched out of professional wrestling and became a global name thanks to his blockbuster movies.

For Paige, there's a lot to learn from Johnson's journey, who, she says, "branded himself so correctly" with his motto of "staying humble and hungry."

"Wrestling doesn't last forever. Bodies of wrestlers are not capable to wrestle forever. So you do think 'what am I going to do next after this.' He was so smart, he built a brand.

"People got to know a different part of him apart from the wrestling. His journey is so inspirational. Like how he came to America with seven bucks in his pocket and now he's the biggest star in the world. I learnt from him that you've to be true to yourself and you can achieve anything."

"Fighting With My Family" releases in the US on February 14 and will open in Indian market in early March.

Patna, Jul 29: BJP MLA Neeraj Kumar Singh Bablu, cousin of Sushant Singh Rajput, on Tuesday said that a huge amount of money has been transferred into the account of actress Rhea Chakraborty from the actor's account.

"An FIR has been filed against actress Rhea Chakraborty by the father of Sushant Singh as a huge amount of money has been transferred into her account and they both have joint accounts for some companies through which cheating has been done from her side," Bablu said.

"This is the issue of probe and police will go there and investigate the matter after that everything will be revealed," he added.

He also said that Karan Johar should also be called in for questioning by the Mumbai Police in connection with Sushant Singh Rajput's death case.

The statement was given in the backdrop of several top film personalities being questioned in connection with the case.

On July 28, an FIR has been registered against actor Rhea Chakraborty under various sections including abetment of suicide on the complaint of Sushant Singh Rajput's father Krishna Kishor Singh, the police said on Tuesday.

It said that a four-member team has been sent to Mumbai following registration of FIR.
"A four-member team has been sent to Mumbai. The team will collect case diary and other important documents from Mumbai Police," Sanjay Singh, Inspector General, Patna Central Zone said.

In the complaint made to Rajeev Nagar police station in-charge, KK Singh alleged that Rhea Chakraborty and her relatives "committed fraud" and "pressurised the actor for financial gains".

Sushant's father alleged that Chakraborty "got in touch with the actor with a motive to establish herself in the film industry using his contacts and she and her relatives started interfering in his affairs".

Jun 8: The Shiv Sena has sought to take a different stand on Bollywood actor Sonu Sood’s help in ferrying migrants back home in the midst of the nationwide lockdown induced by the coronavirus pandemic. On Sunday evening, the actor met Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray at his residence ‘Matoshree’. The CM’s son and Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray and MLA Aslam Shaikh were also present during the meeting.

Sonu Sood’s visit to the Shiv Sena supremo’s residence came after Sanjay Raut, one of the most vocal leaders of the party, criticised the actor and sought to draw a BJP link to his help to migrants in order to show the ruling dispensation in poor light.

“Sood is an actor whose profession is to deliver dialogues scripted by someone else and make a living out of it. There are many people like Sood who would promote any political party if paid well,” Raut wrote in Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna.

Referring to the actor’s help to migrants, Raut wondered if the sudden generosity of “Mahatma” Sood in Mumbai was at BJP’s behest and said that he would “soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and become the celebrity manager of Mumbai.”

As Raut’s remarks fuelled a controversy in political circles, Aaditya Thackeray tweeted in praise of Sood in an apparent attempt to distance the party and its leadership from the leader’s remarks.

“This evening Sonu Sood met up with Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray ji along with Minister Aslam Shaikh ji and me. Better Together, Stronger Together to assist as many people through as many people. Good to have met a good soul to work for the people together.”

“The CM was glad to meet Sonu Sood and discussed the work everyone is doing for the people during covid relief. Misunderstandings don’t exist but what does is a commitment to help people,” Aaditya tweeted.

Sonu Sood too sought to downplay Raut’s remarks and expressed gratitude to all political parties for having supported him. “They (Shiv Sena) are also supporting it and it’s not about any particular party. We have to support all the people who are suffering. Every party from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari has supported me,” the actor told reporters after his meeting with the Chief Minister.

Sonu Sood has earned immense praise for providing help to stranded migrant workers during the Covid-19 lockdown. He has launched a helpline for migrants and has helped hundreds of migrants return to their native places in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Karnataka.
