Chennai, Jul 9: BJP President Amit Shah arrived in the Tamil Nadu capital on Monday for a one-day visit during which he is set to energise grassroots level functionaries ahead of next year's Lok Sabha polls and meet a cross-section of leaders, party insiders said.

Shah, who was met with a rousing welcome by party cadres, will hold an interactive session with members of the Sakthi and Maha Sakthi Kendra, which comprise the grassroots support of the party.

While a Sakthi Kendra in-charge is vested with the responsibility of overseeing the party work of five booth level functionaries, a Maha Sakthi Kendra office-bearer is the overseer for five Sakthi Kendra functionaries.

Hoardings, festoons and banners welcomed Shah along the route from the airport on till the venue of the meeting on East Coast Road in the suburbs.

Describing the about 15,000 kendra level party workers as the pivot of the BJP at the crucial grassroots level, party sources told news agency that the key group of workers needed to be heard and energised.

"The kendra workers have the task of ensuring enrolment of more and more members. Also, they have been asked to have a personal touch with the people. This is crucial work for any party," said a senior functionary working with kendra volunteers.

Though there are functionaries at several other levels, including the party apparatus at the district, town and union level, the role of kendra workers is significant, he added.

Shah will also meet with an administrative committee of the party set up for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

The BJP chief will interact with those in charge of the party in each of the 39 Parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat in neighbouring Puducherry.

The party has appointed two office-bearers (one designated as in-charge and another an organiser) for each of the Parliamentary seats.

Besides, Shah will meet office-bearers from the Union territories of Puducherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The BJP president is also set to meet office-bearers from Sangh Parivar outfits, including the Hindu Munnani which was credited with doing complementary fieldwork during the polls in Tamil Nadu, said a party leader.

BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan termed the visit of the party's national chief a "big morale booster" for workers.

The saffron party in Tamil Nadu has been trying hard to make a dent in the largely bipolar Dravidian politics dominated by the ruling AIADMK and the principal opposition DMK.

The party is hoping to make inroads with the political scene in Tamil Nadu witnessing a churn after the death of AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa in 2016 and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi becoming politically inactive in view of his age.

As part of its efforts to become electorally significant in Tamil Nadu, the BJP had also tried to woo top Tamil actor Rajinikanth into its fold.

The actor, however, did not respond to the overtures is expected to launch his own political party.

Another leading matinee star, Kamal Haasan, has launched his political outfit Makkal Needhi Maiam.

The political innings of Haasan and the expected political entry of Rajinikanth are significant as they come following a perception of a political vacuum in view of Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa fading away from the scene.

Against this background, the BJP is hopeful of expanding its footprint beyond its traditional stronghold in several pockets of Kanyakumari district.

New Delhi, Feb 6: DMK Lok Sabha member M K Kanimozhi on Wednesday challenged popular actor Rajinikanth to raise his voice for Muslims, saying they have "already been affected" by the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and are protesting on streets against the law.

Reacting to his statements earlier in the day in Chennai that "CAA is no threat to Muslims" and "if they face trouble I will be the first person to raise voice for them," Kanimozhi, daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, told news agency that "Muslims in India have already been affected due to CAA".

"Let him (Rajinikanth) come forward and raise his voice for the affected Muslims", she said.

She said the members of the community have been protesting as the law leaves out Muslims.,

Asked whether Rajinikanth, through this pro-CAA statement, was moving closer to the BJP, the MP from Tuticorin said, "What he has said is no different from the BJP's narrative which we have been listening in parliament for the last few days".

Under CAA, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, to escape religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants, and be given Indian citizenship.

Rajinikanth had asserted that the legislation did not pose any threat to Muslims. He wondered as to how Muslims, who chose to stay back in India following Partition will be sent out of the country. Besides, the central government had assured that Indian people will have no issues in view of CAA, he noted.

He charged that some political parties were instigating people against the CAA for their selfish interests.

Jun 13: The Congress on Saturday accused the BJP-led government of burdening the common man with high taxes on petrol and diesel and earning Rs 2.5 lakh crore since March 5.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal said while international crude oil prices have fallen and are at the lowest level in 15 years, yet petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing and common people continue to suffer under the Modi dispensation.

He said instead of passing the benefit of lower crude prices to consumers, petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the seventh straight day on June 13.

"The government has earned as much as Rs 44,000 crore in the last six days due to hike in petrol, diesel prices. Since March 5, the government has earned as much as Rs 2.5 lakh crore by way of increasing petrol, diesel prices.

"If the government had even the slightest feelings for the common man, instead of benefitting the companies and the government, the prime minister would have helped the common man with reduced fuel prices," Sibal said at an online press conference.

According to a report by Care Ratings, he said the hike effectively meant that the Central government is collecting around 270 per cent taxes on the base price of petrol and 256 per cent in case of diesel.

The former union minister said petrol was selling at Rs 71.41 in Delhi on May 1, 2014, when international crude oil prices were USD 106.85, while on June 12, 2020, the price of petrol was Rs 75.16 when the crude oil was at USD 38.

He said central excise and VAT cumulatively account for 69 per cent of tax on fuel in India which is higher than anywhere else in the world. He said the tax of fuel in the US was 19 per cent, Japan 47 per cent, the UK 62 per cent, France 63 per cent and Germany 65 per cent.
