Amit Shah calls Muslim politicians of UPgoondas' in hate-filled speech

November 6, 2016

Saharanpur, Nov 6: Comparing the Muslim politicians of other parties in Uttar Pradesh withgoondas', Bharatiya Janata Party supremo has said that only his party can rid the state of such leaders.

amithshahMr Shah, who launched the first of four Parivartan Yatras that will cover all 403 UP constituencies in the next 50 days in Saharanpur on Saturday, spoke about a host of issues — from surgical strikes and the Kairana exodus to development, triple talaq and crime in the state.

In a surprise attack on some of the top Muslim leaders in opposition parties, Shah called them out by name and labelled them "goondas". "If SP has Atiq (Ahmad), Mukhtar (Ansari), Afzal (Ansari) and Azam (Khan), then BSP has Naseemuddin (Siddiqui), but there are no goondas in BJP," he said, alleging that UP's ruling party is mired in illegal mining cases and rampant corruption.

He reminded the gathering of the "good work" done during the Kalyan Singh government in the 1990s, the only time BJP was in full majority in the state, and how he had rid the state of all the goondas.

Coincidentally, on a day Shah flagged off the Parivartan Yatras, BJP strategists decided to rope in controversial MP from Gorakhpur Yogi Adityanath and firebrand leader from Faizabad Vinay Katiyar as its star campaigners for the yatra. The development comes days after PM Narendra Modi during Dussehra speech in Lucknow and Amit Shah during a rally at Etawah began their speeches with the 'Jai Shri Ram' chant.

Touching upon the issue of alleged exodus of 250 families from Kairana town in Shamli, Shah said in Saharanpur, "There are villagers who are being forced to leave their villages.

Elect us and we will ensure no exodus takes place. Instead we will force elements who are forcing this exodus to leave." Taking a dig at SP and BSP, Shah said, "Chacha (Shivpal) is abusing bhatija (Akhilesh) while bhatija is abusing chacha , and buaji (Mayawati) is abusing both... It is a choice between the devil and the deep sea for the people of this state."

Bengaluru, July 10: The Karnataka government has decided to hold examinations only for the final semester students of undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) in various universities of state and promote other semester students to the next level without holding any examination.

The decision was taken to safeguarding the students' interest as well as academic career of lakhs of students during the time of Covid-19 pandemic. The significant move by the Higher Education department was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan who is also the minister for Higher Education.

The DCM announced that the examination for final semester UG and PG students will be conducted as per the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC) by the end of September 2020.

As per the latest decision, all students who are either at the beginning or middle semester of their UG and PG courses will be promoted to next semester without any examination. The state government further made it clear that the latest decision would only be applicable for this academic year--2019-20.

The students will be promoted to the next semesters based on academic performances during the previous assessment.

Giving details of the decision, Dr CN Ashwath Narayan told media persons that the decision was taken in the interest of the students. "Keeping in mind the safety of students during Covid-19 pandemic times, the government has taken the decision. We have also discussed with education experts, former Vice Chancellors before arriving at this decision," he said.

The DCM also revealed that Governor Vajubhai Vala who is the Chancellor of all the universities has also given his consent for the decision. Students can call up on the department helpline 080-22341394 for any academic queries.

How will students be promoted?

The students who are pursuing UG and PG courses at mid semester levels will be evaluated internally based on their academic performance along with the marks scored during the previous semester or year.

"Based on this comprehensive evaluation, we will promote the students to next semester. But for the first semester students, they will be promoted entirely based on internal evaluation on academic performance," the Deputy Chief Minister explained.

In case if the students wish to improve their marks further, they can take the exams separately later. This apart, students with backlog subjects have also been allowed to carry those subjects further into the next semester subject to only the present academic year.

Kochi, Feb 29: The Kerala Non-Resident Indians' Commission on Friday passed a resolution to request the Centre and Election Commission (EC) to make appropriate amendments in the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, to ensure voting rights to the non-resident Indians working abroad. According to People’s Representation Act, 1951, None-Resident Indians (NRIs) can vote by proxy.

The Commission is a statutory body constituted for the welfare of Non-Resident Keralites working outside India.

The Centre had introduced a bill for this purpose which was passed by the Lok Sabha in 2018, but the same has since lapsed.

Therefore, the Kerala NRI Commission decided to request the Centre to consider introducing the bill in the next session of Parliament considering the interest of the NRI community at large.

The resolution was moved by commission member and NRI entrepreneur Shamsheer Vayalil, who is also a petitioner in the writ petition, filed regarding this in the Supreme Court.

"The central government may consider introducing the bill in the next session of the Parliament session considering the interest of the NRI community at large," read the resolution which will now be sent to the Ministry of Law and the Election Commission (EC).

Commission chairman Justice PD Rajan said the right to vote for NRIs is a genuine demand.

"This is the time that we step up pressure on the agencies concerned to implement this. Voting from the workplace would be a different experience for them. It would be a decisive step," he said.

This fresh development comes at a time when a petition filed in the Supreme Court on the same topic last week came before a bench headed by Justice Deepak Gupta, which considered the case and said it will be heard in April.

"We are expecting a favourable decision from the Supreme Court. We would also approach the NRI commission in other states and request them to raise the same demand," said Vayalil.

If implemented, millions of NRIs around the world would be able to exercise their franchise in the electoral processes of the nation. According to the estimate of the Ministry of External Affairs, there are about 3.10 crore NRIs.
