Amit Shah faces devotees’ ire for disrespecting Vokkaliga seer

Mandya, Aug 15: BJP national president Amit Shah came under severe criticism from devotees of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt at Bellur in the district, after a photograph of him sitting cross-legged in front of Nirmalanandanatha Swami, seer of the mutt, went viral on social media.

Mr. Shah visited the mutt, a major religious centre for the Vokkaliga community, on Sunday. He had a closed door meeting with the seer for a while and it was during this meeting that Mr. Shah is said to have shown “disrespect” to the seer by sitting with his legs crossed.

The photo was widely circulated on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter and many devotees demanded an unconditional apology from Mr. Shah.

The Vokkaliga Sangha here is planning to hold a protest in Mandya and in front of the BJP office in Malleswaram in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah took a dig at Mr. Shah and said: “He doesn’t know how to conduct himself before the seer.”

Seer clarifies

Late on Monday, Swami Nirmalananda said in a release that Mr. Shah had sat in that posture by force of habit before he noticed the seer coming into the room. He had stood up on noticing the seer and it should not be misconstrued, he said.

Konkani writer Richard John Pais passes away at 51

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Noted Konkani writer and theater personality Richard John Pais died on Sunday after a brief illness, family sources said.

He was 51. He is survived by wife and two children.

Known in literary circles as ‘RJP’, his short stories, satirical writings, and poems were very popular.

VBM repatriation flight from Dammam lands in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, June 21: The first ever repatriation flight from Saudi Arabia’s Dammam Karnataka’s Mangaluru under Vande Bharat Mission (VBM) today brought home around 165 stranded passengers.

The IndiGo flight took off from Dammam International Airport at 11 a.m. (Saudi time) and landed at Mangaluru International Airport at 6:30 p.m.

The stranded passengers included pregnant women, senior citizens and those who are in need of emergency medical treatment are on board.

The passengers were screened at the Airport before being despatched for institutional quarantine in special buses.

Even though a few charter flights arranged by a couple of NRI entrepreneurs have already repatriated hundreds of stranded people from Dammam to Mangaluru, the government of India had not operated any repatriation flight under VBM on this sector so far.

Saudi Kannadigas Humanity Forum (SKHF), an NGO which came into existence to help the stranded Kannadigas in Saudi Arabia during covid-19 lockdown had been successful in persuading the government of India operate a flight on Dammam-Mangaluru sector under VBM.

SKHF has also set up an online portal for those who were in need of emergency repatriation. In today’s flight around 100 passengers have obtained seats through SKHF.

High Court stays ban imposed by Karnataka govt on online classes

Bengaluru, Jul 8: In a setback to the State government, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday stayed the initial ban and the subsequent restrictions imposed on schools against conducting online classes from pre-primary to Class X.

Prima facie the ban and embargo imposed on online education violate Articles 21 and 21A of the Constitutionon the fundamental right to education, the Court said.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Nataraj Rangaswamy passed the interim order staying the operation of Government Orders issued on June 15 and June 27 respectively.

The Bench passed the interim order on the petitions filed by parents of children and several educational institutions questioning the legality of the ban and the restrictions imposed.

However, the Bench made it clear that this order should not be construed that the schools have right to make online education compulsory and can charge fee for offering online education. Also, the schools should not deprive students, who cannot opt for online education, the lost education when the schools reopen on regular basis.
