Amit Shah re-elected BJP chief; Advani, Joshi skip event

New Delhi, Jan 24: BJP chief Amit Shah has been re-elected as the party President. The announcement was made after top party leaders led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a bevy of Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states proposed his name for the party President's post during the nomination process today.

Among others who have proposed Shah's name are Union minister Rajnath Singh, Anant Kumar and J P Nadda, M Venkaiah Naidu, besides BJP chief ministers Vasundhara Raje, Raghubar Das, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and others.

BJP Parliamentary Board is scheduled to meet on January 28 evening to welcome Shah into his new term.

This will be first full term, which is for three years, for the close confidant of Modi.

Shah had taken over as the party chief during midway of Rajnath Singh's term after Singh joined the government as the Home Minister in May 2014.

Top BJP veterans including LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, now members of the party's Margdarshak Mandal, skipped the nomination process and Shah's subsequent felicitation at 11, Ashoka Road headquarters of the BJP in New Delhi.

Udupi, Jan 11: A case has been registered against Pune Billava president on the charges of issuing life threats to former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and Dinesh Amin Mattu at the Udupi Town Police station, police sources said on Saturday.

Former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake along with like-minded Billawa organisations and the Udupi Muslim Federation jointly scheduled an inter-religious Billawa – Muslims Harmony meet on January 11, at the Town Hall.

Journalist Dinesh Amin Mattu was the speaker and Vinay Kumar Sorake was to preside over the programme.

Bengaluru, May 9: Karnataka government in its latest order has allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from May 9 till May 17. The third phase of coronavirus lockdown is slated to end on May 17.

"Karnataka government has allowed restaurants, pubs and bars to sell liquor at retail prices from tomorrow till May 17. However, they can be sold only in take away form," read an order issued by the state government.

Earlier, the government had allowed the opening of liquor shops in order to mobilise revenue. However, bars, pubs, restaurants were ordered to remain close amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

As per the latest update by the State Health Department, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state is 753. "Of 753 cases, 346 are active cases. 376 persons were discharged after treatment while 30 people have succumbed to the coronavirus," the Health Department said in a release.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: An Indian Army soldier hailing from Belthangady died in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh after he suffered a heart attack.

The deceased is identified as Sandesh Shetty (34), a resident of Barya. He was serving Indian Army for the last 14 years.

As per sources, Sandesh had resumed duties a week ago after returning from vacation. He was deployed at a quarantine center at Mathura and suffered a heart attack there.
