Amit Shah re-elected BJP chief; Advani, Joshi skip event

New Delhi, Jan 24: BJP chief Amit Shah has been re-elected as the party President. The announcement was made after top party leaders led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a bevy of Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states proposed his name for the party President's post during the nomination process today.

Among others who have proposed Shah's name are Union minister Rajnath Singh, Anant Kumar and J P Nadda, M Venkaiah Naidu, besides BJP chief ministers Vasundhara Raje, Raghubar Das, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and others.

BJP Parliamentary Board is scheduled to meet on January 28 evening to welcome Shah into his new term.

This will be first full term, which is for three years, for the close confidant of Modi.

Shah had taken over as the party chief during midway of Rajnath Singh's term after Singh joined the government as the Home Minister in May 2014.

Top BJP veterans including LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, now members of the party's Margdarshak Mandal, skipped the nomination process and Shah's subsequent felicitation at 11, Ashoka Road headquarters of the BJP in New Delhi.

Kasaragod, May 27: In a tragic incident, two persons, who were brothers, died of asphyxiation while trying to rescue a calf that fell in their well at Bandhiyod near here on Wednesday.

Police sources said the elder brother Narayanan (50) entered into the well first to save the calf that fell in the well early in the morning.

His brother Sankaran (40) also followed suit after he noticed his brother fainting deep down the well. However, he also fainted inside the well.

Mangaluru, Jul 3: Four central crime branch (CCB) police personnel tested positive for coronavirus on Friday in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka.

So far, eighteen police personnel, including an official of the ACP rank and 12 from Ullal police station, have tested positive for Covid-19 in the district in the last few days, police sources said.

A policeman from Mangaluru Rural station and another from Puttur station have also been infected.

All the personnel who tested positive have been admitted to the designated Covid-19 hospitals.

City police commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash said adequate protection has been provided to police personnel who were fighting the pandemic and the members of their families.

As of Thursday, the total coronavirus cases in the district stood at 923 and the toll 18 while the state's infection count has crossed the 18,000 mark with 272 deaths.

Bengaluru, Jun 27: Karnataka witnessed the biggest single-day spike in Covid cases on Saturday as 918 cases were recorded and 11 more deaths were linked to the pandemic. 

In Bengaluru alone, 596 more people tested positive for the infection in the last 24 hours as three more fatalities were also confirmed by the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services.
