Colombo, Jul 6: Opener Hashim Amla smashed 109 off 130 balls to steer South Africa to a formidable 304-5 in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Amla, 31, shared a 151-run stand for the third wicket with skipper AB de Villiers (75) after the visitors won the toss and chose to bat at the R. Premadasa Stadium.

Unorthdox spinner Ajantha Mendis was the most successful of the bowlers, taking 3-61 including the prized scalp of star all-rounder Jacques Kallis for a duck.

The South Africans got off to a steady start, putting on 58 before losing two batsmen in quick succession.

Opener Quinton de Kock was bowled by Angelo Mathews (1-30) for 27 which included a mighty six over the mid-wicket fence off spinner Sachithra Senanayake (1-49).

Just two balls later, Mendis trapped Kallis leg before wicket with his trademark carrom ball to reduce the Proteas to a shaky 60-2.

Amla and de Villiers however made light of the twin setbacks and steered the innings to a position of strength with their 141-ball stand.

Amla, named the new Test skipper last month, was in top form although he was dropped on 49 by Thisara Perera at long-on.

The opener also saw an appeal under the Decision Review System go in his favour, with replays remaining inconclusive about whether he had nicked to the wicketkeeper while trying to go for a hook shot.

At the other end, de Villiers played a sparkling knock, his 75 coming off just 70 balls with the help of five fours and a six.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, who was also dropped on 17, was out when he chipped a simple catch to Nuwan Kulasekara off Mendis.

Amla completed his 13th ODI century before being trapped in front of the middle stump off Mendis. He hit eight fours and a six.

Amla had also hit a century in a practice game against a Sri Lankan President's XI on Friday.

On Sunday quickfire knocks by David Miller (36 not out) and Ryan McLaren (22 not out) led the visitors to their highest ODI total in Sri Lanka against the hosts.

Jan 6: Former India opener Kris Srikkanth on Sunday said he would prefer K L Rahul over Shikhar Dhawan in the T20 World Cup later this year.

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth on Sunday said he would prefer K L Rahul over Shikhar Dhawan in the T20 World Cup later this year.

Dhawan is returning to international cricket after a long gap. During the senior left-handed batsman's absence, Rahul has emerged as one of the top contenders for the opener's slot in limited-overs cricket.

"Runs against SL (Sri Lanka) don't count. If I was chairman of selectors, I won't pick Dhawan in the T20 WC squad. There is no competition between him and Rahul. Only one winner," Srikkanth said on Star Sports.

Before the series, the 34-year-old Dhawan said that he is looking forward to a "new start" in a new year and wants to win the World Cup for India.

Mumbai, Jan 26: Boxing great Mary Kom has been selected for the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award. Olympic silver medallist and reigning badminton World Champion PV Sindhu has been named for Padma Bhushan as the names of Padma awardees were disclosed on Saturday on the eve of the 71st Republic Day.

Rated as one of the most successful amateur boxers of all time, Mary Kom won bronze at the 2012 London Olympics and has won gold at the boxing World Championships for a record six times. She has won a total of eight medals at the World Championships, the most recent of which came in October 2019 in Ulan Ude, Russia. The 36-year-old is now looking to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Sindhu became the only Indian woman to win an Olympic silver when she reached the final of the women's singles event at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazi. In August last year, the 24-year-old became the first Indian to win gold at the badminton World Championships.

She has also won two silver and two bronze medals at the World's in the past, thus making her only the second woman after Chinese two-time Olympic gold medallist Zhang Ning to win five medals in the competition.

Indian women's hockey captain Rani Rampal, who has been the face of women's hockey in the country and played a pivotal role in the team qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is among those who have been nominated for the Padma Shri award.

Women's football stalwart Oinam Bembem Devi, former cricketer Zaheer Khan, shooter Jitu Rai, former hockey captain and coach M.P. Ganesh and archer Tarundeep Rai are the other sportspersons to be selected for the Padma Shri award.
