Chennai, May 6: AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa on Thursday unveiled her party manifesto for the May 16 assembly elections, promising freebies such as mobile phones to all 1.92 crore ration card holders, 50% subsidy on scooters for working women, 100 units of free power and free Wi-Fi at public places."I have fulfilled all the promises made in the last election. This time I'll do more than you can imagine (if returned to office)," she said in Perunthurai in Tamil Nadu's Erode district. After the last election, she had distributed free laptops to class 11and 12 students. Now they have been promised free internet connectivity. The `Amma bonanza' comes at a stage in the campaign when the DMK was seen to be gaining ground.

DMK's Karunanidhi had announced tablets for 16 lakh school students and smartphones for the poor.He had also promised power subsidies, lower milk prices and a waiver on educational and farm loans. Jayalalithaa has incorporated most of these, and gone a few steps ahead.

Highlights of the AIADMK manifesto, released on Thursday, include a complete waiver of all farm loans, Rs 40,000-crore loans for farmers from 2016-21, no FDI in retail, free laptops with internet for Class 10th and 12th students, free set top boxes to all Arasu cable TV subscribers, and up to 100 units of electricity free of cost to consumers, which will exempt 78 lakh domestic consumers from paying electricity bill. The poor have been promised an Amma banking card to avail of all government services while a Rs 50-crore Amma Venture Capital fund will be set up for first generation entrepreneurs. The manifesto also talks of breakfast for primary schoolchildren. PMK member Anbumani madoss, who has positio Ramadoss, who has positioned himself as an alternative to the two veterans, said, "The government has increased the financial burden on the state. This will go further up."

The TN poll debate is gradually veering away from personality cults to the themes of development and corruption, especially in urban areas.

Both AIADMK and DMK have focussed on jobs, infrastructure, start-ups, industry and investments. DMK's leader-in-waiting M K Stalin agreed that jobs mattered more to young voters than freebies. For the first time, both parties have promised an anti-corruption ombudsman.

Ahmedabad, Mar 15: Four Congress MLAs in Gujarat have tendered their resignation to Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi ahead of the election to the four Rajya Sabha seats in the state to be held on March 26.

The four Congress legislators tendered their resignation on Saturday, which Trivedi has accepted.

Trivedi told this to PTI on Sunday.

He said he will announce the names of the legislators in the Legislative Assembly on Monday.

"Four Congress MLAs tendered their resignation to me on Saturday, and I will announce their names in the Assembly tomorrow," he said.

With this, the strength of the Congress party in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly has come down to 69 from 73.

The Congress had on Saturday shifted its 14 MLAs to Jaipur fearing horse-trading by the ruling BJP ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls.

The BJP has fielded Abhay Bhardwaj, Ramila Bara and Narhari Amin for the election.

Given its number in the Assembly, the ruling party can only win two seats unless it manages cross-voting from the opposition camp or ensures defection of Congress MLAs to win the third seat.

The Congress has fielded senior leaders Shaktisinh Gohil and Bharatsinh Solanki.

New Delhi, Apr 11: As India battles the Covid-19 crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a video conference with chief ministers primarily to take their feedback on whether the 21-nation-wide lockdown be extended beyond April 14 to stem the tide of the infections.

The Central government is understood to have also obtained views on the issue from all the relevant agencies and stakeholders involved in the efforts to contain the spread of the pandemic.

The video conference, which began at 11am, comes amidst indications that the central government may extend the nationwide lockdown with some possible relaxations even as Punjab and Odisha have already announced extending the lockdown beyond April 14 when the current spell of 21-day shutdown across the country ends on Tuesday.

The Union Home Ministry has sought views of state governments on various aspects, including whether more categories of people and services need to be exempted. In the current lockdown only essential services are exempted.

This is for the second time the prime minister is interacting with the chief ministers via video link after the lockdown was imposed.

During his April 2 interaction with chief ministers, Modi had pitched for a "staggered" exit from the ongoing lockdown.

A PTI tally of numbers reported by various states as on Thursday at 9.30pm showed a total of 7,510 having been affected by the virus nationwide so far with at least 251 deaths. More than 700 have been cured and discharged. However, the last update from the Union Health Ministry put the number of confirmed infections at 7,447 and the death toll at 239.

Addressing floor leaders of various parties who have representation in Parliament, Modi had on Wednesday made it clear that the lockdown cannot be lifted in one go, asserting that the priority of his government is to "save each and every life".

According to an official statement after the Wednesday interaction, the prime minister told these leaders that states, district administrations and experts have suggested extension of the lockdown to contain the spread of the virus.

Before the lockdown was announced on March 24, the prime minister had interacted with the chief ministers on March 20 to discuss ways and means to check the spread of the novel coronavirus.
