arvind-kejriwal-overnight-protest

New Delhi, Jan 21: Leading a group of an estimated 150 cadre from his Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal defied prohibitory orders on Monday to launch an unprecedented protest outside Parliament House, demanding executive control of the Delhi Police and the transfer of police personnel his government says defied orders from Ministers.

“Some people say that I am an anarchist and that I am spreading disorder,” Mr. Kejriwal said, as police cordoned off large swathes of central Delhi, leading to girdlocked traffic in central Delhi. “I agree that I am an anarchist. Today, I will create anarchy for Mr. Shinde.”

Mr. Kejriwal charged Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde with corruption, and called on police personnel to shed their uniforms and join his protest.

A visibly-angry Mr. Kejriwal also said his party would not be responsible for any disruption to the upcoming Republic Day parade, the route for which passes just metres from the protest site. He also said his party would “teach a lesson” to the Congress, which supports the AAP government in Delhi, in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Kejriwal’s protests come days after Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti controversially led a vigilante group which forcibly detained four Ugandan and Nigerian women, alleging they were involved in prostitution and drug trafficking. The Delhi Chief Minister also accused the police of mishandling a gang-rape of a 51-year-old Danish tourist early last week.

Delhi Police officials defied Mr. Bharti’s orders to raid premises involved in the alleged rackets. Later, forensic tests cleared the forcibly-detained women of narcotics use.

Even as chaos mounted in central Delhi, Mr. Kejriwal did not give a timeline for the protests, but said he had come prepared to continue the sit-in for “up to ten days.”

The Union Home Ministry has said it will expedite a probe into the conduct of the police officers, but an FIR and been registered against unknown perpetrators involved in the vigilante action. Mr. Shinde dismissed Mr. Kejriwal’s demands, and asked the chief minister to await the findings of a judicial inquiry ordered by the Lieutenant-Governor.

The AAP has met with growing criticism in recent days, with video surfacing of senior party leader and prospective Lok Sabha candidate from Amethi, Kumar Vishwas, saying: “Earlier nurses used to come from Kerala, kali-peeli (dark skinned), one would naturally feel like calling them sister.”

Tussle for police control

Mr. Kejriwal’s party has also been demanding that the Congress cede control of the Delhi Police, now under the Union Home Ministry, to the Delhi Government — a long-standing demand both Chief Ministers Sheila Dikshit and Madan Lal Khurana had unsuccessfully pressed earlier. The demand was rejected by both Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party-led governments at the centre.

“We are the elected government of Delhi,” Mr. Kejriwal told reporters on Sunday. “We are accountable to people of Delhi. When a crime against woman happens Delhi’s public comes to us asking for their protection. They do not go to Mr. Shinde.”

Mr. Kejriwal also defended the conduct of his Ministers, saying the Delhi Police had “failed to check drug and sex rackets.”

India is among 58 nations, including 27 European Union members, who have moved a draft resolution demanding evaluation of the World Health Organisation (WHO)'s response towards the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The European Union-led draft resolution on global COVID-19 response is set to be tabled at the upcoming World Health Assembly on Monday.

The draft resolution demands initiation "at the earliest appropriate moment to review experience gained and lessons learned from the WHO-coordinated international health response to COVID-19".

"We are deeply concerned by the morbidity and mortality caused by COVID-19 pandemic, the negative impacts on physical and mental health and social well-being, the negative impacts on economy and society and the consequent exacerbation of inequalities within and between countries," read the draft.

"We express solidarity to all countries affected by the pandemic, as well as condolences and sympathy to all the families of the victims of COVID-19," it added.

The resolution says timelines are to be evaluated regarding "recommendations the WHO made to improve global pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response capacity".

The WHO on January 23 declare a global health emergency, but did not declare it and waited for a week for its director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to return from China.

By that time, COVID-19 cases increased 10 times and the virus entered 18 countries.

According to Health Policy Watch, till as late as February, the WHO did not support countries for imposing travel restrictions to China.

"When countries began evacuating their citizens from Wuhan, the COVID-19 epicentre, the WHO said it did not favour this step".

The WHO finally declared it a pandemic on March 11.

The global health body has come under criticism not just from the US for its response being "China-centric".

Jaipur, Jul 13: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Monday unanimously passed a resolution supporting Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot-led government and accusing the BJP of destabilising the government by indulging in horse-trading of MLAs.

The CLP also condemned all "undemocratic" acts to weaken Congress party and its government and demanded action against any Congress office-bearers involved in anti-party activities.

"Feared by exemplary works and public service of Congress government, BJP-led conspiracy is trying to destabilise Congress' state government, horse-trading of MLAs and trying to murder democracy by using money and political power," read the resolution.

"It is unfortunate that BJP did not learn lessons from the defeat in the Rajya Sabha elections and are trying to destabilise Congress government using corrupt means.

This ripping off of democracy by BJP is an insult to 8 crore people of Rajasthan, they will not accept it. CLP meet expresses its confidence in Congress President Sonia Gandhi and leader Rahul Gandhi, and unanimously supports the government led by Ashok Gehlot," it said.

"This meet urges that strict disciplinary action be taken against any office-bearer or member of Legislative Party who indulges in activities against the Congress government, party or gets involved in any conspiracy," read the resolution.

As many as 107 MLAs attended the CLP meeting, which begun in the afternoon and now has been concluded.

"107 MLAs are present at the CLP meeting in Jaipur," Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's media advisor confirmed to media.

The crisis in Rajasthan Congress intensified with Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot at loggerheads. While Gehlot is blaming BJP for trying to destabilise the state government by poaching MLAs, Pilot is camping in Delhi to speak to the party leadership regarding the political turmoil in the state.

BJP has claimed that the Ashok Gehlot-led government has lost the majority in the state.

"Sachin Pilot was the rightful candidate for the post of Rajasthan Chief Minister but Ashok Gehlot took the charge; a conflict in the party began since then. What is happening today is the result of that conflict. The state government has lost the majority," Rajasthan BJP President Satish Punia said today.

Jammu and Kashmir, May 5: Awarding the prestigious Pulitzer Prize to three Indian photographers, the Pulitzer Board at Columbia University claimed that it was for their work in Kashmir as "India revoked its independence".

The award to Channi Anand, Mukhtar Khan and Dar Yasin in the feature photography category for their pictures for the Associated Press was announced on Monday.

The prizes, considered the most prestigious for US journalism, are associated with the university's Graduate School of Journalism where the judging is done and is announced, although this year it was done remotely.

Besides a certificate, the prizes carry a cash award of $15,000, except the public service category for which a gold medal is awarded.

The public service prize went to The Anchorage Daily News for a series that dealt with policing in Alaska state.

In making the award to the three, the Board said on its website that it was "for striking images of life in the contested territory of Kashmir as India revoked its independence, executed through a communications blackout".

Besides making the false claim about "independence" of Kashmir being "revoked", the board that includes several leading journalists did not explain how their photographs could have reached the AP within hours of the incidents recorded "through a communication blackout".

India's Central government only revoked Article 370 of the Constitution that gave Jammu and Kashmir a special status and it was not independent.

Indian journalists were allowed to operate in Kashmir, while only non-Indian journalists were barred.

The wording of the award announcement calls into question the credibility of the Pulitzer Board that gives out what are considered prestigious journalism awards.

The portfolio of pictures by the three on the Pulitzer web site included one of a masked person attacking a police vehicle and another of masked people with variants of the Kashmir flag, besides photos of mourners and protesters.

One of the finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism was a reporter of Indian descent at The Los Angeles Times, Swetha Kannan, who was nominated for her work with two colleagues on the seas rising due to climate change.
