Andhra CM Kiran Reddy resigns over creation of Telangana

Reddy_resignsNew Delhi, Feb 19: Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday submitted his resignation to governor ESL Narasimhan to protest the UPA government's decision to bifurcate the state and create Telanagna, India's 29th state.

Telangana was created on Tuesday after the bill was passed in Lok Sabha with the BJP coming in support of the UPA to clear the Andhra Pradesh State Re-organisation Bill amid din.

"I'm resigning for failing to fulfil my duties," said Reddy at a press conference in Hyderabad.

His close aide and state social welfare minister Pitani Satyanarayana on Tuesday had confirmed that Reddy will not relent.

Andhra Congress sources said the chief minister's office had on Tuesday made phone calls to several party leaders, informing them about Reddy's decision.

HT was the first to report on February 16 that Reddy has made up his mind to step down from the post.

"The game is not over till the last ball is bowled" had been Reddy's refrain till now but the passage of the Telangana bill appears to have sealed his fate.

The names of state cabinet ministers Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, Ramanarayana Reddy and Raghuveera Reddy are doing rounds as his possible successor.

The buzz in political circles is that Reddy might either form his own political party or join Samaikyandhra Party, but state Congress leaders pointed out that the chief minister has now developed cold feet.

Apparently, a section is of the view that the proposed new party would have no desired impact as Reddy "took really long time" to step down and did not stall the bifurcation.

Half a dozen ministers and several legislators who had rallied behind Reddy were feeling let down by the CM.

"He played a big game with us," said a minister.

Ministers Erasu Prathap Reddy, Ghanta Srinivasa Rao and TG Venkatesh resigned on Tuesday, while others, including Dokka Manikya Prasada Rao and Kondru Murali declared that they were loyal Congress soldiers.

"The CM is only capable of addressing press conferences, not forming a party," said Rao, a minister from Seemandhra.

The Congress leadership had recently issued a stern warning to Reddy to "fall in line" or "face consequences" if he continued to create problems for the party on Telangana.

Kolkata, May 11: Murshidabad district, one of the biggest contributors to the army of migrant workers from West Bengal, received news of unnatural deaths of three of these people since Saturday. While two died in Kerala, one was found dead in a rented house in Odisha.

Residents of Baliaghati village in Murshidabad’s Suti police station area said Safikul Sheikh (31) was killed in a road accident in Kerala. Sheikh’s associates called up his family on Sunday morning and said he had gone to a local market, violating lockdown orders, when the accident took place. Sheikh wanted to return home before Eid but got stranded.

Mohammad Hafijul, one of Sheikh’s relatives, said, “A few days ago a special train from Kerala carried migrant workers to Murshidabad but Safikul did not have the money to buy a ticket. We do not know how his body will be brought back.”

In another incident, a 24-year-old resident of Domkal allegedly hanged himself in Kerala on Saturday. He used to work in a brick kiln. His mother said, “My son was depressed as he could not buy a ticket to board the special train that came to Murshidabad. We have appealed to the local administration to bring back his body.”

In the third incident, Bakul Sheikh (24) died under mysterious circumstances at Sonepur in Odisha where he went five months ago to work as a mason. Sheikh hails from Kohetpur village in Shamserganj. His relatives told the local police that his associates called up and said he was found dead inside the toilet of the house where he was living with other migrant workers.

New Delhi, Feb 3: The Allahabad High Court on Monday granted bail to former BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand in the alleged rape case of a law student. He was arrested in September last year after the 23-year-old woman accused him of sexual harassment and blackmail.

The woman was a student of the Chinmayanand-controlled SS Law College in Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Chinmayanand is facing charges under Sections 376C (sexual intercourse by a person or persons taking advantage of their official position), 354 D (stalking), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed on the directions of the Supreme Court.

The case came to light after the woman posted a video on August 23 last year on social media alleging that “a senior leader of the saint community” was harassing and threatening to kill her. The law student went missing a day later, after which her father lodged a complaint, accusing Chinmayanand of harassing his daughter.

Chinmayanand was expelled from the BJP after his arrest.

The SIT had, on November 6, submitted chargesheet in the case.

In a parallel case, the woman was charged with trying to extort money from Chinmayanad. The Allahabad High Court granted her bail in that case in December last year.
