Andhra CM Kiran Reddy stages protest at Jantar Mantar against his own party

February 6, 2014

CM_Kiran_ReddyNew Delhi, Feb 6: The drama over the formation of Telangana scaled new heights on Wednesday with Andhra Pradesh chief minister Kiran Reddy staging a sit-in protest in the Capital while a harried government weighed the option of a voice vote to pass the contentious legislation.

The CM doing an Arvind Kejriwal at Jantar Mantar seemed even more bizarre as Reddy was opposing his own Congress party's decision to form Telangana.

The task of getting the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Bill through Parliament looks more challenging as Reddy set an unusual precedent by leading the anti-Telangana stir even as Congress pledged support to the new state.

While Reddy and some of his cabinet colleagues protested, Seemandhra MPs from Congress, YSR Congress and TDP disrupted Parliament, forcing adjournment of Lok Sabha followed by Rajya Sabha.

It is learnt that Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader K Chandrasekhar Rao has urged the government to pass the bill by a voice vote, arguing that bills to create Uttarakhand and Jharkhand were passed in a similar manner.

Government sources said the voice vote route could be an option as the Telangana bill is not a constitutional amendment, but senior Congress leaders remain cautious, pointing to vehement opposition to the new state.

However, the political directive to Congress floor managers is clear enough. "The next Lok Sabha will have 17 MPs from Telangana and 25 MPs from Seemandhra, the die seems cast," said a minister.

The bill is expected to be cleared by the Union Cabinet on Thursday with a group of ministers having finalized a draft.

BJP reiterated that it will oppose marshalling out of anti-Telangana MPs and also demanded that the two Houses must be in order when the bill is considered, conditions that Congress felt were aimed at delaying the bill.

Meanwhile, TDP leader N Chandrababu also reached the capital to oppose the Centre's "unilateral" decision to create a new state without adequate consensus. "The Centre must take the states into confidence. But the Centre is violating all this and that is not correct," he said.

Official sources said a TDP delegation led by Lok Sabha MP Nama Nageshwar Rao expressed readiness to support the bill. Rao represents TDP MPs from Telangana region.

With the government planning to bring the Telangana bill to Parliament, possibly Rajya Sabha first, on February 12, emotions are coming to a boil with supporters of both camps coming close to blows at Andhra Bhawan on Wednesday.

The heated exchanges between Telangana and Seemandhra MPs in Parliament also threaten to spill out of hand forcing the government to consider tough action like seeking the suspension of anti-Telangana MPs.

Though government managers are cagey in spelling out plans for disciplinary action, saying the matter is for presiding officers to decide, passing the bill in the presence of Seemandhra MPs seems a rather fraught task.

The noisy and chaotic start to the continuing winter session did not bode well for transaction of business and finance minister P Chidambaram admitted as much while addressing a business conclave, saying he doubted if Parliament will pass any law.

"We have to go through the ritual of attending Parliament every day and come back empty handed," Chidambaram said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was more optimistic, saying "hiccups" over Telangana would subside. "I think these are hiccups. I hope all sections of the House will have the wisdom to set aside these prejudices and create an atmosphere conducive to harmonious working of the House," he said.

But the situation does not look promising for the government, as tough action like suspending anti-Seemandhra MPs will only increase the bitterness over the formation of Telangana.

While BJP is not making things easier for the government, the Congress will end up losing face on both sides of the Telangana divide if it backs out at this stage.

Aurangabad, Jan 29: Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of creating a conflict between Hindu and Muslim communities in the country, former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar has said the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was adding fuel to the fire.

He was speaking at a rally held on Tuesday at Pathri in Parbhani district of Maharashtra against the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). It was organised by NCP MLC Abdullah Durrani.

"Modi and Shah used to create conflicts between Hindus and Muslims during the Gujarat elections. Now they are adopting the same strategy in the country," Kumar alleged.

Citizens should keep the religious conflicts aside and question the present government about unemployment and the poor state of the economy, he said.

"Through the CAA, the government is adding fuel to the fire, which is already raging in the country," he alleged.

When anyone questions the government about the problems existing in the country, it in turn asks him about his citizenship, the former JNUSU leader alleged.

Mumbai, Apr 2: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday

urged Muslims to observe Shab-e-Barat staying inside their homes, and also suggested that the birth anniversary celebrations of Dalit icon Dr B R Ambedkar be postponed in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

Pawar said Ram Navami, being observed on Thursday, is celebrated with fervour every year across the country.

"Unfortunately, there is this threat of coronavirus this year and we have to observe some restrictions...but I am sure people must be remembering Lord Ram staying inside their homes," he said in his address via Facebook.

Shab-e-Barat, also known as the night of forgiveness, will be observed on April 8.

Members of the Muslim community visit graveyards to remember their relatives who are no more, Pawar said, and called for taking precautions to avoid gathering of people given the coronavirus crisis.

Pawar said congregation such as the one held last month in Delhi's Nizamuddin area by Tablighi Jamaat could have been avoided, and urged people to ensure there is no repeat of such meetings on Shab-e-Barat.

"The meeting should have been avoided, but it was notand others may have to pay for it," Pawar said referring to the religious meeting in the national capital.

He said the "possibility of some people who attended the meeting carrying the disease cannot be ruled out" and pressed for maintaining discipline given the situation caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Shab-e-Barat is on April 8. Muslims remember their relatives, who are not more, by visiting kabrastan (graveyard). It should be observed inside home. Precaution should be taken to see there is no repeat of the Nizamuddin meeting-like episode," he said.

The birth anniversary of Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, is observed on April 14.

Pawar said people should also think about postponing Ambedkar's birth anniversary celebrations.

"We normally celebrate it (the anniversary) for two or so months. We should think whether we should really observe the programme at this juncture (given the coronavirus threat).

If we come together, we may have to face health issues," the former Union minister said.

He said in general, 90 per cent people have been observing the lockdown, but 10 per cent are not doing so.

The Centre and the Maharashtra government may have to extend the lockdown period if discipline is not observed till April 14 (till when the lockdown is in force), he said, urging people to toe the line in the interest of each other.

Pawar also praised Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the state administration and police for working round-the- clock, and asked people to cooperate with them by staying at home.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 20: As COVID-19 count surges to 666 with 24 new cases reported on Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that if cases keep increasing in this manner, then the State will be in a 'serious situation.'

Out of 24 new patients, 12 have returned from abroad, 11 others from other States and one has been infected by a contact. Now, total positive cases in the State stand at 666 including 161 active cases, Chief Minister Vijayan said at press meet.

"If the number of COVID-19 cases increases like this, then the State will be in a serious situation. We have given more relaxations in lockdown guidelines. We need to have more strict measures in some areas," he said.

Speaking about the people who are coming to Kerala from other States, he stressed that all people coming from outside are "not carriers." However, the State has to tighten the security as some among those people are "carriers."

The Chief Minister while clearing that there is no restriction for the people to come back to Kerala, said: "Lakhs of people residing in other states cannot come together."

"There is no relaxation in containment areas. Those who came from outside have to be in quarantine. This is their moral responsibility. The State has implemented home quarantine successfully. Various level committees like ward committee, neighbours and residential associations are monitoring the people in quarantine," he said.

Chief Minister Vijayan has directed the police to visit people under home quarantine to take their report and district panchayat to make sure that all panchayats are working in a proper manner.
