Anna Hazare silent on Kiran Bedi's U-turn

January 22, 2015

New Delhi, Jan 22: Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare literally snubbed Kiran Bedi, his former aide, to show his displeasure at her for joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), by not taking her calls and declaring on Wednesday that he would stay away from “political dirt”.

bediThe septuagenarian Gandhian had done the same thing – couple of years ago — when his other aide Arvind Kejriwal floated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to fight a political battle. Hazare remained inaccessible for Kejriwal for a few days. Kejriwal and Bedi were part of the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement that Hazare launched in 2011.

However, now in the Delhi Assembly polls – the two tallest figures are fighting against each other and are engaged in a war of words.

At one point of time, Anna, Bedi and Kejriwal sat in core committee meetings in Ralegan Siddhi—his village in Ahmednagar —and chalked out future strategies.Hazare’s displeasure was clearly visible when he said he does not want to comment on Bedi’s move. “I want to stay away from political dirt,” he told reporters in a brief chat at Ralegan Siddhi.

On being asked to react to Bedi’s move and over reports he refused to take calls from her, Hazare said: “I do not wish to comment.”

Bedi, after being declared a CM-candidate on being asked about Hazare, had said: “I called Annaji on telephone, sometimes he was sleeping and sometimes he was taking rest. I tried calling Annaji…and would call again.”

To repeated queries, the 77-year-old veteran again said: “Please keep me away…..I do not want to get into political dirt.”

In December 2013, when AAP decided to form government in Delhi, Hazare had taken the same stand of not making any remark. “Let them do what they think good, I do not wish to comment,” he said.

On the issue of Jan Lokpal, he said that he would decide the future course of action after the Delhi polls.

While his closest aides have taken the political path, Hazare, a former soldier, has managed to stay away from politics.

Before the Lok Sabha elections last year, another aide Gen (Retd) V K Singh, the former chief of Army Staff joined the BJP, fought and won the Lok Sabha elections, and he is now the Minister of State for External Affairs and Minister of State (Independent Charge for North East Region).

New Delhi, Jun 30: Short video making app TikTok, one of the 59 apps banned by the Central government on Tuesday, has said that it complies with all data privacy and security requirements under the Indian law and has not shared any information of its users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Tiktok India posted the statement issued by Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok, India.

"The Government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and we are in the process of complying with it. We have been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and has not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government," reads the statement.

"Further, if we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity. TikTok has democratized the internet by making it available in 14 Indian languages, with hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers depending on it for their livelihood, many of whom are first-time internet users," the statement further reads.

Amid border tensions with China in Eastern Ladakh, the Centre had on Monday banned 59 mobile apps including Tik Tok, UC Browser and other Chinese apps "prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity and defence" of the country.

A senior official at the IT ministry said the prime reason to block the apps under section 69 A of Information Technology Act is to stop the violation and threat to the security of the state and public order and to plug the data leaks.

"Almost all of them have some preferential Chinese interest. Few are from countries like Singapore. However, the majority have parent companies which are Chinese," the official said.

This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace, Ministry of Information Technology said.
