Another blunder: Narendra Modi sends Bhagat Singh to Andaman jail

Narendra_ModiAhmedabad, Feb 28: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi once again fumbled with historical facts when he said that Bhagat Singh had spent a long time incarcerated on the Andaman islands.

In fact, it was Veer Savarkar who was imprisoned in the jail on the Andamans. Bhagat Singh and his friends were lodged in jails around Delhi. After their arrest on April 8, 1929 from the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt were first imprisoned in Delhi itself. Later, they and other revolutionaries were shifted to a jail in Miawali. After a lengthy trial, Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death in the Lahore conspiracy case and hanged in a Lahore jail in March 1931.

Modi made the gaffe while discussing his vision of India in 2022, 75 years after Independence, at the inaugural function of e-Nagar in Gandhinagar on Wednesday. Recalling the contribution of the revolutionaries who had sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle, Modi went on to claim that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru had spent time in the Andaman jail.

"The mere mention of Bhagat Singh and his friends makes our hair stand on end. Why did all these people go to the gallows? Why did they spend time in Andaman-Nicobar islands? The freedom they struggled for should be glowing in its 75th year," Modi said.

In the recent past, the Gujarat chief minister has got historical facts wrong on more than one occasion. Speaking at a function in Kheda in November last year, Modi had attacked the Congress for not bringing back the ashes of Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mookherjee from Switzerland. What he actually wanted to say was the ashes of the freedom fighter Shyamaji Krishna Varma.

New Delhi, Aug 3: President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended warm greetings and good wishes to the countrymen on the occasion of Rakshabandhan.

The President in his message said, "Greetings on Raksha Bandhan! Rakhi is the sacred thread of love and trust that connects sisters with brothers in a special bond. On this day, let us reiterate our commitment to secure the honour and dignity of women."

"Many wishes to all the countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Rakshabandhan," Prime Minister Modi tweeted in Hindi.

Rakshabandhan, which is being celebrated today, is a celebration of the unique bond between brothers and sisters. Tying of the Rakhi by sisters, symbolises love, affection and mutual trust between brothers and sisters.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 9: The Kerala government has set up five COVID-19 helpdesks for non-resident Keralites in countries which have a substantial number of Pravasi Malayalis.

Addressing a press conference here Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said: "In order to address the concerns and issues faced by the non-resident Keralites, we have set up five dedicated COVID helpdesks in countries where we have a substantial number of Pravasi Malayalis."

The helpdesks started by Norka Roots will be managed locally by persons and voluntary organisations active among non-resident Keralites. The Kerala government has requested the Indian Ambassadors in various places to cooperate with these helpdesks.

The Chief Minister also informed that online medical services would be made available to the non-resident Keralites through the Norka Roots website.

"Pravasi Malayalis can consult prominent doctors in Kerala by audio or video calls through the website, with prior registration. The services of various speciality doctors will be available from 2 pm to 6 pm IST," he said.

Currently, registration for the Norka Pravasi ID card is only available for the Malayali expatriates residing or working abroad for a period of not less than six months. "Now students from Kerala studying abroad can also avail this facility. The overseas student registration service would enable them to get Insurance benefits and discounts on flight tickets. This registration will be mandatory for all students presently studying abroad as well as for those going abroad, from now on," Vijayan said.

The Pravasi ID card is a multi-purpose photo identity card that entitles every non-resident Keralite to avail all services and facilities offered by Norka Root. The card comes with an add-on Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) coverage. Two prominent airlines are offering a discount on the base fare for air tickets booked by Norka Id card holders.

New Delhi, Feb 18: Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor on Tuesday questioned the Nitish Kumar government's development model, even as he sneered at the chief minister for making ideological compromises to stay in an alliance with the BJP.

Kishor, who has been vocal about his opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), said Kumar needs to spell out whether he is with the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi or those who support Nathu Ram Godse.

"Nitish ji has always said that he cannot leave the ideals of Gandhi, JP and Lohiya... At the same time, how can he be with the people who support the ideology of Godse? Both cannot go together. If you want to stay with the BJP, I don't have any problem with it but you cannot be on both sides," he said.

"There has been a lot of discussion between me and Nitish-ji on this. He has his thought process and I have mine. There have been differences between him and me that the ideologies of Godse and Gandhi cannot stand together. As the leader of the party you have to say which side you are on," he added.

In a direct assault on Kumar's model of governance, Kishor said Bihar was the poorest state in 2005 and continues to be so.

"There has been development in Bihar during the last 15 years, but the pace has not been as it should have," he added.
