Anti-fake news initiative: WhatsApp new beta checks images shared on app

San Francisco, Mar 16: To tackle the spread of fake news via its platform, WhatsApp’s new beta version shows a test feature that would run Google-powered web-checks on images being shared on the app to verify their legitimacy.

Called “Search by Image”, the feature would search an image on the web that a user either sent or received in their chats using official Google application programming interfaces (APIs) to find similar or equal images on the web.

“If you choose to search an image, WhatsApp will alert you that it will be uploaded to Google after which WhatsApp will open the browser to show the results,” WABetaInfo reported on Friday. The feature would help users understand if a news is real or fake.

“When you receive an image, you can try to search it on the web and read information related to that image on the web,” the report said.

Apart from this, WhatsApp version 2.19.73 beta update also adds emojis natively on the app keyboard. The release and roll out specifications of the features remain unclear as of now.

WhatsApp is also testing an in-app browser on the platform to allow users to open links within the platform itself.

Puttur, June 19: A 32-year-old woman in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district died due to complications caused by dengue yesterday.

The deceased is Naseema (32), wife of Nazeer Master, a resident of Parpunja village in the taluk.

She was not well for past few weeks and she was diagnosed with dengue fever with chills a week ago.

Initially she underwent treatment at a hospital in Puttur. After her condition worsened, she was shifted to a private hospital in Deralakatte.

However, she breathed her last without responding to any treatment last night.

Naseema is the second victim of the mosquito-borne infection in Puttur taluk this month. Last week, dengue had claimed the life of a woman in Bettampady village in the same taluk.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Saturday initiated Phase I clinical trials to use plasma therapy for COVID-19 patients at city-based BMC Victoria Hospital.

Sriramulu was accompanied by Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar.

"Karnataka has taken a lead role as we initiate Phase I clinical trials to use Convalescent Plasma Therapy for severe COVID-19 infected patients. BMC Victoria hospital took the first step today. We are determined to vanquish this enemy of mankind," Sriramulu said in a tweet.

"I wish our team of doctors at BMC Victoria hospital and team led by Dr US Vishal Rao a great success. This will be a torchbearer in our fight against Corona," he said in another tweet.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the state has so far reported 474 confirmed cases of COVID-19 which include 152 discharged or cured patients and 18 deaths.

Mangaluru, Feb 28: Two labourers lost their lives as they were buried alive in a landslip at Karangalpady Junction near Bunts Hostel in the city today.

The landslip occurred when a compound wall collapsed burying at least five persons under the debris. It is feared that three people are still under the debris.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Masood (20) from West Bengal and Bhimappa (25) from Bagalkote.

Local police and fire fighters are carrying out rescue operation.
