Chikkamagaluru, Jun 24: Even though the family members of local BJP leader Mohammed Anwar, who was stabbed to death by unknown assailants two days ago, claimed personal rivalry as the reason for the murder, the saffron party suspected a political motive behind it.

Anwar, 44, general secretary of the BJP’s Chikkamagaluru city unit, was attacked by two people on a bike at Gowri Colony around 9.30 p.m on Friday. A seriously injured Anwar was declared dead later in a hospital. Anwar, who was a TV cable operator, is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.

Based on a complaint filed by Anwar’s brother Mohammed Kabir, the Basavanahalli police have registered a case. He has named five people — Yusuf Aji, Mansur, Badru, Tayyub, and Farooq — as suspects in the complaint.

Mr. Kabir told reporters on Saturday he suspected it to be an act of “supari” killers. “The accused had attempted to kill my brother eight years ago. They were all convicted in the case and two of them were still in prison. A month ago, one of the accused, Tayyub, had threatened to kill my brother,” he said. Kabir made it clear that there was no political rivalry between the two. There had been differences over the years between the two families. “My brother had raised voice against corruption in the masjid committee, where the family of the accused had control,” he said.

BJP stages protest

BJP leaders have termed it a political killing. MLA for Chikkamagaluru C.T. Ravi met members of Anwar’s family. “Going by the way he was killed, it looks like it was an act of professional killers. The police should probe if those in prison in the previous assault case hired contract killers for the act,” he said.

BJP workers, led by Mr. Ravi and Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlaje, staged a protest and submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner M.K. Srirangaiah, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

Ms. Karandlaje said it was the duty of the police to investigate if it was a murder over personal enmity or political reasons. She said the criminal act had shown that there was no government in the State. “I appeal to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy not to repeat the mistakes committed by his predecessor, Siddaramaiah,” she said.

The police investigating the case have suspected personal rivalry behind the incident. K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, Chikkamagaluru, said, “We are investigating the case. We will give details once we crack it.”

Bengaluru, May 21: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today slammed Law Minister JC Madhuswamy for yelling at a woman farmer in Kolar, an incident that attracted widespread criticism.

The incident happened on Wednesday when Madhuswamy, who is also the minor irrigation minister, was inspecting the Koramangala-Challaghatta (KC) Valley project, under which Bengaluru’s sewage is treated and pumped into lakes in Kolar.

During his visit, farmer Nalini Gowda questioned Madhuswamy on the encroachment of the 1,022-acre S Agrahara lake. At one point, Madhuswamy lost his cool and yelled, “Aye! Shut your mouth, rascal,” and asked the police to take her away. Before this, Madhuswamy told her, “Make a request. I’m a very bad man. You can only air your grievance. Don’t command us.”

A video of this exchange was aired by news channels.

“What (Madhuswamy) said is not right. I have warned him. None can forgive such an explicit manner of talking with a woman. That, too, behaving like that being a minister doesn’t bode well. I will talk to that woman also and I’ll ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Yediyurappa told reporters.

The incident has come as a shot in the arm to the Opposition Congress, which is already attacking the Yediyurappa administration on the COVID-19 crisis. Condemning Madhuswamy’s behaviour, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah demanded an apology and asked Yediyurappa to sack him from the Cabinet.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar said it was unbecoming of Madhuswamy to behave like that being a senior minister. “People will ask us questions and express their problems, naturally. What’s important is how we handle ourselves. Be it a woman or anyone, they come to us because we’re into public service. Calling them ‘rascal’ and things is not right. Maybe there was some irritation, but I agree with (Siddaramaiah) that he should be dropped from the Cabinet,” he said.

On his part, Madhuswamy said he felt intimidated. “If I have hurt the feelings of any woman, I will certainly apologise,” he said. “But citizens should realise, we go to their villages to ask about their problems. If they start abusing us publicly, how can we work? My secretary and I heard her for five minutes and then told her that we know our responsibility. We asked her to close the issue. She didn’t stop and I got tempted (sic),” the minister said.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: On the last day of his four-day trip to Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum, chief minister BS Yediyurappa urged the global business community to invest in cities other than Bengaluru in the state.

On Thursday, while extending an invitation to entrepreneurs to participate in the Global Investors Meet in November in Bengaluru, Yediyurappa highlighted the “conducive investment climate” in the state vis-a-vis others by pointing to its 7% growth rate which is much higher than the national average of below 5%.

He also pointed to the state’s rich history and the fact that it is home to a number of desi MNCs such as Infosys, Biocon Wipro and Dynamatics. “At the same time, the state has one of the lowest unemployment rates compared to the national average,” Yediyurappa said.

In his address to heads of businesses, industries minister Jagadish Shettar also urged investors to consider Tier 2 and 3 cities for investment. “Land banks have been created in Tier 2 and 3 cities and regional connectivity has improved. Let us strive to place Karnataka on a highgrowth path,” Shettar said.

Lending a “helping hand”, Union minister Piyush Goyal, in his address, appealed to the community to invest in Karnataka, which “has a robust and congenial industrial atmosphere”, but also urged them to spread “tentacles” to all parts of the country.
