Any film I star in will become bigger: Shah Rukh Khan

September 29, 2014

Mumbai, Sept 29: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has had a tryst with off-beat films with 'Maya Memsaab', 'Swades', 'Chak De! India', but does not understand the concept of this genre as he feels his presence can turn any unconventional film into a mainstream money-spinner.

Shah Rukh KhanThe 48-year-old actor, best known for his romantic hero act in films, said he did take a few risks with his movies but since he is such a big star, his experimental films also find audience.

"What is an off-beat film? You put me in an off-beat film and it will become on-beat. Like 'Chak De! India' was an off-beat film and it did really well money wise. It is the biggest success of my career," Shah Rukh said.

"I think any film that I am part of will become bigger than it was meant to be as I am big movie star. Even if it is an off-beat movie, people will watch it and so it will become on-beat. I did 'Maya Memsaab', 'Oh Darling Yeh Hai India', 'Darr', 'Baazigar', 'Swades', 'Chak De! India' and others so I do off-beat films whenever I feel like doing it," he said.

However, Shah Rukh said that he is cautious about starring in off-beat films and will never take up such projects just to comply with what others want him to do.

"I will never do anything that others want me to do. I have enough money, I am a rich star, I am famous and have enough awards. I will do films that make me happy like I did 'Ra.One' because my children likes superheroes. My father played hockey so I wanted to do 'Chak De'. It is important to feel excited about doing what you want to," he said.

Shah Rukh said that his forthcoming releases YRF's 'Fan' and Rahul Dholakia's 'Raees' fall in the category of off-beat cinema and he is happy to be a part of them. The star, who has been in the industry for over two decades, said even at this stage of his career he does not worry about his work as he knows he is evolving as an actor with each passing day.

"I have no worries at all. I am good at the craft, I am at a good level. I know my choices and do my best. I have no worries as every day you evolve as an actor. Actors don't worry and if they do they are not actors they are stars. And I am an actor. My stardom overshadows my work," he said.

Shah Rukh is aiming to usher in a crackling Diwali at the box office with his upcoming multi-starrer film 'Happy New Year'. The movie will see the reunion of SRK and choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan after the success of 'Main Hoon Naa' and 'Om Shanti Om'.

The actor said during the making of the film, which also stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah, he learnt many important lessons especially the virtue of being patient.

"I have never done an ensemble film where everyone has an equal part. When you are trying to entertain people you have to get bigger and better. 'Happy New Year' is a venture which we all have tried to take it to the biggest level possible to entertain people so that they are happy on Diwali.

"As an actor who has worked for 20 years and who could lose patience easily I think what this film has taught me is you got to be patient. Every good thing comes with patience. It doesn't come with speed, aggression. I think patience is another name for creativity," Shah Rukh said. 'Happy New Year', produced by SRK's banner Red Chillies Entertainment, will hit theatres on October 24.

Bihar, Mar 5: A complaint has been filed before a court in Bihar against lyricist Javed Akhtar over his remarks on the FIRs being registered against expelled AAP councillor Tahir Hussain in the wake of Delhi riots.

The complaint was lodged on Wednesday by Amit Kumar, a local advocate, before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Thakur Aman Kumar.

On the basis of a newspaper report, the complainant has alleged that Akhtar's remarks were seditious and promoted religious hatred.

The media report was based on Akhtar's tweet of February 27 that "So many killed, so many injured, so many houses burned, so many shops looted so many people turned destitute but police has sealed only one house and looking for his owner. Incidentally, his name is Tahir. Hats off to the consistency of the Delhi police."

The violence in northeast Delhi claimed at least 42 lives and left over 200 injured. The former Rajya Sabha member was heavily trolled for the tweet.

In a subsequent tweet, Akhtar who asserted that he is a non-believer and a rationalist, had clarified that he was not asking "why Tahir but why ONLY Tahir and not even an FIR against those who have openly threatened violence in the presence of the police".

The matter is likely to come up for hearing on March 25.

Mumbai, Apr 8: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has started the process of transferring funds into the accounts of daily wage workers of the film industry, the Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE) said on Wednesday.

The actor had recently pledged to financially support 25,000 daily wage workers who have been badly hit by the 21-day lockdown to contain the coronavirus spread in the country.

According to B N Tiwari, FWICE, President, Salman has made an initial payment of Rs 3,000 each to the daily wage workers of the film industry, starting Tuesday.

"We had given him the final list of 23,000 workers so far, who were in dire need of financial help. He is going to transfer money in installments as he doesn't want people to misuse it. He has transferred about Rs 3,000 to every worker yesterday and he will transfer money again after some time. We are thankful to him for helping our workers," Tiwari told PTI.

A source close to Salman said the superstar will continue to support the workers until the situation improves in the country.

"We have started the process from Tuesday. We will be giving sufficient money to workers monthly, we will also give money next month and if the situation is still the same, we will continue to financially help the workers till it doesn't return to normalcy," the source said.

FWICE said Yash Raj Films have also provided a financial help of Rs 5,000 to around 3,000 workers.

"Besides Salman, a lot of people from Bollywood have come forward to help the workers, including Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty, who have given Rs 51 lakh each. Boney Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor too have given money and there are few more who have offered financial assistance to the federation. We also received Rs 1.5 crore from the Producers Guild of India on Tuesday.

"The federation has received a total amount of Rs 3 crore from film industry people. We are yet to receive money from Netflix, which they had announced for daily wage earners and also from Amitabh Bachchan, who is going to provide ration to one lakh workers. He is going to provide coupons which we should receive in a day or two," Tiwari said.

He further said Bachchan's ration coupon for workers will also be given to other associations across the country, such as in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Karnataka.

Tiwari said FWICE is in the process of making another list of needy workers and then they will begin the process of transferring money.

"The Rs 3 crore that the federation has received will be distributed among our five lakh workers in Maharashtra. We will start sending money from April 14 in phases. Those who haven't received any financial aid will be helped first. We are in the process of making a list of such workers for the same," Tiwari said.

"FWICE has also begun distributing ration to workers in suburban Andheri and Jogeshwari. So far we have distributed 5,000 packets of ration and we will give more, he added.
