AP: TDP-BJP stalemate continues; Javadekar-Naidu meet likely

April 18, 2014

AP-TDP-BJPHyderabad, Apr 18: The stalemate over electoral alliance between TDP and BJP in Andhra Pradesh continued even as the former reportedly offered one Lok Sabha seat in lieu of six Assembly seats to the latter.

The BJP is said to have agreed to part with two Assembly seats, out of the 14 allotted to it as part of the alliance, and also agreed to change its candidates in two places.

TDP and BJP leaders will hold another round of talks today to end the stalemate as the deadline for filing nominations for the May 7 elections ends tomorrow.

It may be recalled that TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu expressed serious displeasure over the choice of candidates by the BJP in certain Assembly constituencies allotted to it.

"If they put up such weak candidates, it will only benefit the rival parties and weaken the alliance. It will also impact our prospects in the Lok Sabha elections," Chandrababu said in election meetings in Vizianagaram district last night.

He rushed back to Hyderabad late last night to sort out the issue even as BJP national spokesperson Prakash Javadekar too reached here and discussed the issue with TDP MP Y Satyanarayana Chowdary.

The TDP reportedly offered Rajahmundry Lok Sabha seat to the BJP, in addition to the four already given, in lieu of Ichchapuram, Rajahmundry Urban, Narsaraopet, Guntakal, Santanutalapadu and Tadepalligudem Assembly segments.

It asked the national party to change candidates in some other seats where it was weak.

The BJP is said to have agreed to part with only two Assembly seats, besides changing nominees in two other places.

Javadekar is expected to have a round of talks with Chandrababu before the latter leaves for Krishna district for campaigning.

Meanwhile, the TDP released its fourth list of candidates for 23 Assembly seats for the May 7 elections.

It dropped four of its sitting MLAs.

In Proddatur in Kadapa district, sitting MLA M Linga Reddy was dropped and the seat given to former MLA Varadarajulu Reddy, who defected from the Congress recently.

Controversial Kovvuru (SC) legislator T Rama Rao was also denied ticket this time while two others - Durga Prasad and Hemalatha - also did not figure in the latest list.

New Delhi, Feb 5: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday expressed his suspicion over the government using force to clear the Shaheen Bagh stretch where an agitation has been ongoing for over 50 days against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

While speaking to ANI over the phone, Owaisi was asked that there are indications from the government that after February 8, Shaheen Bagh will be cleared.

In reply, he said, "Might be they will shoot them, they might turn Shaheen Bagh into Jallianwala Bagh. This might happen. BJP minister gave a statement to 'shoot a bullet'. The government must give an answer as (to) who is radicalising."

Further speaking about NPR and NRC, Owaisi said, "Government must give a clear cut answer that till 2024 NRC will not be implemented. Why are they spending Rs 3900 crore for NPR? I feel this way because I was a History student. Hitler during his reign conducted census twice and after that, he pushed the jews in a gas chamber. I don't want our country (to) go in that way."

New Delhi, Jan 4: The Supreme Court on Thursday extended till June 12 its earlier order of May 15 asking the government not to take any coercive action against companies and employers for violation of Centre's March 29 circular for payment of full wages to employees for the lockdown period.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, S K Kaul and M R Shah reserved the verdict on a batch of petitions filed by various companies challenging the circular of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued on March 29 asking the employers to pay full wages to the employees during the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In the proceedings conducted through video conferencing, the top court said there was a concern that workmen should not be left without pay, but there may be a situation where the industry may not have money to pay and hence, the balancing has to be done.

Meanwhile, the apex court asked the parties to file their written submissions in support of their claims.

The top court on May 15 had asked the government not to take any coercive action against the companies and employers who are unable to pay full wages to their employees during the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Centre also filed an affidavit justifying its March 29 direction saying that the employers claiming incapacity in paying salaries must be directed to furnish their audited balance sheets and accounts in the court.

The government has said that the March 29 directive was a "temporary measure to mitigate the financial hardship" of employees and workers, specially contractual and casual, during the lockdown period and the directions have been revoked by the authority with effect from May 18.

New Delhi, Jan 16: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government on Thursday rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh, one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

The mercy plea was then forwarded to Lieutenant Governor, who has now sent it to Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The convicts were sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

The victim, who was later given the name Nirbhaya, had succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Singapore where she had been airlifted for medical treatment.
