Appointment of Lt Gen Suhag as Army Chief final: Jaitley

New Delhi, Jun 11: Government today asserted that the appointment of Lt Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag as next Army Chief is final as opposition Congress raked up a controversy involving minister and former Army Chief Gen V K Singh and demanded his resignation.

Army Chief final "As far as government is concerned, appointment (of Lt Gen Suhag as Army Chief) is final and government stands by it," Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha.

His statement came when senior Congress leader Anand Sharma raised the issue of certain tweet messages against Army Chief-designate by Gen Singh, Minister for Development of Northeast Region and MoS for External Affairs.

Jaitley said the previous UPA government had made the appointment few weeks ago and it is a practice that "we keep" some issues outside the "realm of inter-party politics".

He said the matter should not be raised directly or indirectly.

Earlier, Sharma raised the issues of tweets and demanded Gen Singh's removal from the Council of Ministers saying the matter was "very serious" and the comments by a minister do not "augur well".

The issue was raked up against the backdrop of Defence Ministry telling the Supreme Court in a recent affidavit that the decision of Gen Singh, then Army Chief, to impose a promotion ban on Suhag, then 3 Corps Commander, was "illegal and premeditated".

Soon after the matter came to light, Gen Singh alleged that the "Defence Ministry affidavit is the same as it gave to Armed Forces Tribunal under protective and conniving UPA".

He also justified his decision to impose a Discipline and Vigilance (DV) ban on Lt Gen Suhag saying, "If unit kills innocents, does dacoity and then head of organisation tries to protect them, should he not be blamed? Criminals should go free!!."

Political design behind Jamia, Shaheen Bagh protests to ruin nation's harmony: PM Modi

Feb 4: Amid the agitations against Citizenship Amendment Act, National register of Citizens and National Population Registration across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that there is a "political design" behind all these protests including in Delhi's Jamia and Shaheen Bagh to ruin the harmony of the nation.

"Be it Seelampur, Jamia or Shaheen Bagh, protests held over the past several days regarding the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Is this just a coincidence? No. This is an experiment," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first election rally for Delhi polls at Karkardooma.

"There is a political design behind all these protests including Jamia and Shaheen Bagh. These protests are a conspiracy to divide India. These protests are going to ruin the harmony of the nation," he asserted.

Lambasting the opposition parties including Congress and Aam Aadmi Party for supporting the ongoing protests, he said: "But AAP and Congress are provoking people. Constitution and tricolor are being kept in front and attention is being diverted from the real conspiracy."

"These people were doubting the ability of our forces during surgical strikes. Do citizens of Delhi want such people in power? These people are saving those who want to break India into pieces," he added.

People have been protesting at Jamia and Shaheen Bagh against CAA, NRC and NPR. Members of the Opposition have deemed CAA "discriminatory and anti-Constitution" while the Centre has maintained that the new law has no effect on Indian citizens.

Recently, two firing incidents took place near Jamia Millia Islamia University.On Sunday night, the firing incident was reported near gate number five at the university following which people including some students of the varsity gathered outside the Jamia Nagar police station. They returned from the Jamia Nagar police station after their complaint was registered.

Earlier, a student sustained injuries after a young man fired at the protestors near Jamia.

If this situation continues, our nation will be one of the poorest countries in the world. This govt is trying to sell all Govt hold units like Railway, Insurance, etc to private companies only to help the industrialists and to get commission from them. LIC was running in profit till 4 to 5 years back, but now its running in loss. Huge amount of money from LIC is taken by Govt to hide the downfall of economy. Only God can save our country from the hands of present looters + decoits.

Out on bail rape accused brutally attacks and kills victim's mother in UP

Kanpur, Jan 18: Kanpur has witnessed an Unnao-like incident as the out on bail accused in rape case attack the family members of the victim. The mother of the victim, who later died in the hospital, was brutally attacked by the accused. The accused reportedly attacked the victim's mother and her aunt on January 8.

The actual rape case goes back to 2018 when a group of men abducted a minor girl from her own society. The accused had reportedly raped her and also beaten up her mother.

A video of mother being beaten up reportedly went viral soon after.

The mother of the victim had reportedly filed a complaint against one of the accused for abducting and molesting her daughter two years ago at a tannery falling under jurisdiction of Chakeri police station. The main accused along with five others was booked under section 354 of the IPC (sexual assault of children) and sent to jail. Around two weeks ago, the accused got bail and on January 9 they attacked the deceased and her sister.

Kolkata Port Trust renamed after Syama Prasad Mukherjee, announces PM Modi

Kolkata, Jan 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that Kolkata Port Trust will be renamed as Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration of 150th anniversary celebrations of Kolkata Port Trust, he said: "I announce the renaming of the Kolkata Port Trust to Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port. He is a living legend who was a leader for development and fought on the forefront for the idea of One Nation, One Constitution."

"This port represents industrial, spiritual and self-sufficiency aspirations of India. Today, when the port is celebrating its 150th anniversary, it is our responsibility to make it a powerful symbol of New India," Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder had set the stone for industrialization in India. "Chittaranjan Locomotive Factory, Hindustan Aircraft Factory, Damodar Valley Corporation and several others saw active participation from him," he said.

The Prime Minister also felicitated the two oldest pensioners of the Kolkata Port Trust, Nagina Bhagat and Naresh Chandra Chakraborty.
