AR Rahman turns 48, musicians pay tribute

January 6, 2015

Mumbai, Jan 6: On the 48th birthday of Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman Tuesday, singers like Lata Mangeshkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy have hailed the talent of the ‘Mozart of Madras’, who has given Hindi cinema some lilting melodies and memorable numbers throughout his career.

AR Rahman

Here’s what they have to say of the musician, who won two Oscar awards for his work in international film ‘Slumdog Millionaire':

Lata Mangeshkar: A.R. Rahman is very talented. I’ve sung very few songs for him. I love ‘Jiya jale’, ‘Khamoshiyan gun-guna lagi’, ‘O paalan haare’ and ‘Luka chuppi’. Rahman and I came together for the first time for the evergreen ‘Jiya jale’ in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Dil Se..’. Then we collaborated for a prayer-song ‘Ek tu hi bharosa’ in ‘Pukar’. It was a very special song. Because I sang it on screen myself. But I must admit ‘Jiya jale’ was a very special song too. It became such a rage. And I’m asked to sing that song at every concert that I go to.

I think he was a little intimidated by me when we did ‘Jiya jale’ in Chennai. But he allowed me to do it my own way. And when I started humming an impromptu alaap at the endA of the tune, he told me to just go on. He recorded that as well. Subsequently I recorded other songs with Rahman. My duet ‘Luka chuppi’ with Rahman for ‘Rang De Basanti’ became so popular. It’s rare nowadays to get a good song like it.

Prasoon Joshi: Artistes and human beings like Rahman are rare. All my work with Rahman is very special to me. Much as I enjoyed writing fun songs like ‘Masti ki paathshala’ and ‘Masakalli’, I cherish exploring the spiritual side of my creativity in the songs ‘Arziyaan’ and ‘Zariya’. May god bless him with some of the happiness that he has given us through his music.

Ayushmann Khurrana: A.R. Rahman is a living legend. He has always been ahead of our times. His melodies have a phenomenal range. They’re always filled with surprises. He carries in himself the sure signs of a master composer. My favourite movie soundtracks of A.R. Rahman are ‘Delhi-6?, ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Rockstar’. I wish the most reverred music director of our times a Happy Birthday.

Kavita Krishnamurthy: He’s a very talented and innovative music director. And a joy to work with. My favourite Rahman song is my own ‘Tu hi re’ in ‘Bombay’.

London, May 8: Actor Florence Pugh says the most terrifying aspect of starring in the upcoming superhero film "Black Widow" was doing the Russian accent.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe's stand-alone film, the Oscar-nominated actor plays Yelena Belova, a sister-figure to Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff/ the titular Black Widow who was trained in the Red Room.

"I was scared because my Russian accent was going to be out there and I didn't know what it sounded like.

"I'm also playing a character who no-one's seen before but they've read about her. I didn't know whether people were going to hate me!" Pugh told ELLE UK for its June issue.

The 24-year-old actor also said the idea of joining the MCU itself was quite "daunting".

"When you think of Marvel, it's big and daunting. Especially being a relatively small actor to look at it and go, 'Oh! I'm going to be a part of this', that's a big decision," she said.

"Black Widow", which was scheduled to hit the theatres on May 1, will now release on November 6 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Directed by Cate Shortland, the film also stars David Harbour and Rachel Weisz.

Mumbai, Jun 17: A lawyer on Wednesday moved a criminal complaint against 8 persons, including Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and producer-director Karan Johar, in a local court regarding the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The court had fixed July 3 as the next date of hearing.

In his complaint filed in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha alleged that these eight persons forced Sushant to commit suicide under a conspiracy which, he pleaded, amounted to murder.

Others named in the complaint are Aditya Chopra, Sajid Nadiadwala, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Bhushan Kumar, Ekta Kapoor, and director Dinesh.

The complainant claimed that these persons did not let Sushant's movies get released under a conspiracy and the late actor was not even invited to film functions because of these people.

Ojha said that Sushant Singh Rajput's death had not only hurt the people of Bihar but the entire country.

He said the complaint had been filed under Sections 306, 109, 504 and 506 and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranawat had been listed as a witness in the case.

Sushant Singh Rajput had allegedly committed suicide at his Bandra flat in Mumbai on Sunday.
