Are terrorist Godse’s supporters patriots, asks SDPI

New Delhi, Feb 15: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI) has expressed deep concern over the students’ turmoil in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in last one week where students belonging to different political dispensation are embroiled in a fierce battle of the worst kind to down each other group in the game of one upmanship.

protest

SDPI national vice president Adv. Sharfuddin Ahmad, while condemning anti-national slogans having been raised in the JNU campus, has castigated the Delhi police for arresting JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar without taking permission from the JNU Vice Chancellor and following the legal procedures as laid down by law and slapping sedition charges. This was all done despite the fact that Kumar along with his fellow Union office-bearers had repeatedly made it clear that JNUSU neither organized the event nor raised any anti-India slogans during the said event. This amounts to be clear violation of fundamental rights.

Adv. Ahmad demanded that Kanhaiya Kumar should be released forthwith then only peace can be restored in the JNU campus. Thereafter, a thorough impartial inquiry conducted into the episode to get to the root of the matter. A dialogue can also be initiated between the warring parties to resolve the issue amicably. It appears that arrest of Kumar was done post haste by the police to please their super boss namely the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who had exhorted them to take up action, he added.

Adv. Ahmad said that slapping sedition charges against a person who wasn't even involved in the said protests is a gross over-reaction by the Union Home Ministry. It's not only unconstitutional but also looks like the government is trying to do in certain key universities all across the country so that the right-wing youth organizations like ABVP could cement their place in traditionally left wing campuses.

He said the government is wasting precious time agitating over various student activities and should leave the detailed handling to the university authorities. Rather than invoking sedition laws against students the Govt should setup counselling centres with JNU who can advise the students to rely more on their speeches and written word rather than conducting agitations on various issues.

He said that NDA’s Modi-led government is openly indulging in double standards. On 26 January this year, the "Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha" observed Republic Day as "Black Day". Is this not sedition? Why action against them was not taken. BJP's dubious nature on "nationalism" is completely a mockery of the ideal of Indian Constitution. There should be Equality before Law. The government must take action against them immediately without bias. If not, then BJP’s Nationalism is selective and a fraud on the Constitution.

Adv. Ahmad said that is praising Godse, killer of Mahatma Gandhi, the biggest terrorist of India treason or not? Is glorifying of the murderer of father of the Nation by some persons a patriotism act? Is it not anti-national? Supporters of Godse, the killer of Mahatma Gandhi, are calling the students anti-national! What an irony. Why this double standard?

The statement stated: “The NDA Government should do well to remember what Voltaire, the French historian, and philosopher, had to say about freedom of expression. People are free to voice their opinion, even if it is anti-establishment. A dignified protest is far better than violence and communal violence. The police should be utilised for better things than arresting students. Or are they only fit to arrest and harass the weak and unarmed?”

The NDA Government is under dark clouds due to the mishandling of Hyderabad Central University matter of Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula, the ban on Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle in IIT Madras and long drawn agitation over the FTII Mumbai. The direct intervention by the Central Home Minister exhorting the agencies to take unproportionate reaction against the students leaders of JNU in midst of the controversy of anti-national slogans raised by ABVP workers is highly unfortunate and taken in a hurry. In view of the record of Rajnath Singh as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh handling the situation in Kanpur on 16 March 2001 when 16 lives of youth were lost due to the firing of the police makes a person think that under his stewardship guns speak more vocally and unproportionately.

Neither we support anti-Indian slogan at JNU nor glorifying Godse, observing Repulic day as BLACK DAY, hoisting Pakistani Flag by RSS goons, undermining secular constitution of India and waging war against the state by Sanghparivar by openly declaring India as Hindu Rashtra, honouring Indira Gandhi killers, Eating Biryani in Pakistan with Terrorist Hafiz saeed or Don Dawood Ibrahim. WE INDIANS VIEW ALL THESE ARE ANTI-NATIONAL ACTIVITY. Now tell me do you consider the above as Patriotism??

While century old Congress party weighing its option to condemn Central Govt action against Kanhaiya Kumar of sedition charges ( I appreciate Rahul Gandhi's visit), 5 year old SDPI boldly condemned and questioned the foolish dastardly act of impotent central Govt. We salute you SDPI - it is the spirit of Indian Democracy and pluralism. Long live SDPI.

New Delhi, Feb 1: An extremist today fired shots at anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, just three days after another extremist fired at protesters at nearby Jamia Millia University. This is the second daylight shooting in which the police caught the man only after the shots were fired.

The man, apparently a fan of BJP leaders including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, shouted "Jai Sri Ram" as he fired shots standing near police barricades put up at the south Delhi locality where hundreds of women and children have sat on the road in protest for more than a month. He was caught by the police. No one was injured.

The shooter was also heard saying: "Humare desh mein sirf Hinduon ki chalegi aur kisi ki nahi (in our country only Hindus will prevail)." He had allegedly come to the area in an auto.

A witness said the man fired two-three times, standing right next to the police, not at the spot of the protest but close enough to a large crowd of unarmed men, women and children.

"We suddenly heard gunshots. This person was shouting Jai Shri Ram. He had a semi-automatic pistol and he fired two rounds. The police were standing just behind him," said the witness, a volunteer at the protest.

"When his gun jammed, he ran. He tried to fire again, then tossed the gun into the bushes and tried to escape. Some of us and the police caught him, the police dragged him away," he added. Protesters questioned whether the police were more focused on keeping an eye on them rather than tackling crimes like this.

Police officer Chinmay Biswal said the man had fired shots in the air. "The man had resorted to aerial firing. Police immediately overpowered and caught him," he said.

This incident - the second shooting in Delhi at an anti-CAA protest -- has chilling similarities to the one that took place just two km away at Jamia university on Thursday, when a 17-year-old Class 12 boy from Uttar Pradesh fired a crude pistol at unarmed protesters with dozens of policemen behind him, watching. The teen, who left home claiming he was going to school, took a bus to Delhi intending to target Shaheen Bagh but landed at Jamia next-door after an auto-driver dropped him off there to avoid the traffic chaos.

The shootings have taken place in quick succession after controversial slogans of "Goli Maaro Sa***n Ko (shoot the traitors)" were chanted on Monday at a Delhi campaign rally of Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of State for Finance, who was part of the team involved in Budget 2020 announced today.

Mr Thakur was banned from campaigning in Delhi for three days for egging on BJP workers to shout the "Goli Maaro" slogan.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slammed Home Minister Amit Shah, to whose ministry the Delhi Police reports to, over the two shooting incidents. "What have you done to our Delhi, Amit Shah ji? Bullets are being fired in broad daylight... Law and order is being criticised constantly. Elections will come and go, politics will keep happening, but for the sake of the people of Delhi, please focus on fixing law and order," he tweeted.

The Shaheen Bagh protest has attracted attention from across the country in the protests against the CAA or the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which makes religion a criterion for citizenship. Critics say the law discriminates against Muslims as only non-Muslims from neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh can become Indian citizens if they fled religious persecution and entered India before 2015.

Of late, critics of the Shaheen Bagh protests, mainly pro-CAA activists, have attacked the month-long sit-in on a key road in Delhi connecting to Noida. They say the protest has become a traffic nightmare for commuters.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: The COVID-19 count in Karnataka went up by 10 on Wednesday, reaching 51. The 10 new positives included two girls aged seven and nine who contracted the infection from their father.

The 34-year-old man had returned from Amsterdam on March 19 and tested positive as the 17th confirmed case in Karnataka.

Though his family were kept in isolation and under quarantine in their house, the children developed a cold. They were confirmed for COVID-19 infection while their mother is still negative.

The government remained tightlipped over whether or not a 70-year-old woman from Gouribidanuru who was put under house quarantine and died on Wednesday morning, tested positive for COVID-19. Government officials would neither confirm nor deny anything on the results of tests on the woman.

This evening’s bulletin issued by the Karnataka health department continued to indicate the strong correlation of coronavirus infection and foreign travel.

Among the positive cases identified today were

A 63-year-old Bengaluru man and his 59-year-old wife, with a history of travel to Brazil and Argentina.
Two 26-year-old men with a history of travel to Spain and arrived back in Bengaluru via Dubai.
Two others, a 63-year-old woman and her 69-year-old husband, had a history of travel to Athens and London.
A 34-year-old man, a resident of Udupi, who returned from Dubai
A 37-year old woman, a resident of Chitradurga, with a history of travel to Guyana and arrived back in Bengaluru via Delhi
Speaking to the media, medical education minister K Sudhakar said health officials were apprehensive the positives may go up tonight.

Of the corona positive cases detected in Karnataka so far, three have been discharged after quarantine, and 47 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals in a stable condition. There has been one fatality.

As per a recommendation by the high-level health committee, the government has decided to convert the Bowring Hospital into a coronavirus treatment hospital facility along with the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital for Chest Diseases and Victoria Hospital.

“The number of positive cases are growing at an alarming rate and the government needs more treatment facilities. The government is for burning of COVID-19 death cases. However, due to some religious practices, it has been decided they would be buried in 8 ft deep pits,'' Dr Sudhakar said.
