Mangaluru, May 28: An army-man-turned Bajrang Dal leader has been arrested along with his four associates by the police on the charges of extortion and blackmail in Moodbidri on the outskirts of the city.

SantoshSantosh Poojary, a local Bajrang Dal leader, caught red-handed when he was blackmailing a resident of Puthige in Moodbidri on Saturday.

After quitting Indian army under the pretext of ill-health, Santosh had returned to his hometown to engage in real estate business. He joined Bajrang Dal and soon became one of its leaders.

According to police, Santosh had been blackmailing one Raghavendra Bhat on some issue and demanding Rs 2 lakh for some days. Mr Bhat, without the blackmailer's knowledge had informed this to police.

The police also managed to arrest four of his associates from Moodbidri, Bantwal, Addyar and Kapikkad in Mangaluru at Moodbidri bus stand.

Santosh is the second senior Bajrang Dal leader arrested by the police in Moodbidri this week. Last Wednesday, another Bajrang Dal leader, Sumit Raj, was arrested in connection with an alleged murder conspiracy.

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Karnataka Health Department on Thursday permitted District Health Departments to appoint doctors with MBBS, on a contractual basis with permission of concerned District Health Officers and Commissioners, a statement said.

The state government has also hiked the salary of contractual doctors from Rs 45000 to Rs 60000 per month.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu urged contract doctors to continue offering their services amid their demand for regularisation of services.

"I request the contract doctors with folded hands to continue offering their services. With regard to their two demands, one of salary hike and the other being permanency, I assure all of them that I stand with them and their requests will definitely be fulfilled," said Mr Sriramulu.

The Chief Minister had also discussed about the two issues yesterday and agreed to facilitate the pay hike, he added.

Panaji, Feb 6: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday told the Legislative Assembly that neighbouring Karnataka has diverted the Mahadayi river water, due to which its flow in the state has taken a hit.

He was speaking during a debate on the motion of thanks to Governor Satya Pal Malik for his address.

Goa and Karnataka are locked in a dispute over sharing of the Mahadayi river water. Goa is strongly opposing the Kalasa Banduri project proposed to be built by Karnataka on the river, which is aimed at providing drinking water to three north Karnataka districts by diverting the Mahadayi water into the Malaprabha river.

Speaking in the House, Sawant said that the flow of Mahadayi river has reduced due to the diversion of water by Karnataka.

"I am admitting that they (Karnataka) have diverted the water. We have brought it to the notice of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change," he said.

The Goa government has explained to the Centre that the water which flows into the state is "not wasted".

"We have told them that the perennial flow of water is necessary for Goa's wildlife," he said.

Sawant said that his government was serious on the issue of Mahadayi.

"Mahadayi is more than a mother to me. We have not compromised anywhere on the issue. I have been associated with the Mahadayi agitation since 2000," the chief minister said.

He said the issue would be fought before the Supreme Court, where special leave petition has been filed by the state.
