Arrested Bhatkal doctor’s wife deported to Pakistan

Bhatkal, Oct 7: The Pakistani wife of a youth from Karnataka’s Bhatkal, who is now in jail on terror charges, has been deported by the Indian authorities. 

Arsala Abeer, 32, wife of Syed Ismail Afaq Lanka had crossed the one-month deadline that the Union home ministry had set for her to return to her home country.

In fact Arsala’s grandparents were Indians and they had migrated to Pakistan during Partition.

She was handed the cut-off date after the ministry of external affairs rejected her visa renewal application in August. A senior police officer handling Afaq’s case said Arsala periodically renewed her two-year visa after she married Afaq in 2006 and settled in Bhatkal.

“The Union home ministry issued her a notice in August, seeking an explanation on why her visa should not be cancelled,” he said. 

“On expiration of her visa, the ministry later informed her that if she did not leave the country of her own volition, she would be deported.”

“We sent her back to Pakistan on a flight via Mumbai and Sharjah,” the officer said.

“She made a final appeal to the home ministry last month, asking that she be allowed to stay on in India,” an Uttara Kannada police officer said. 

“Arsala said she and Afaq have three children, a 10-year-old daughter and two younger sons, who would be orphaned if she were to be deported, because her husband is in jail.”

Police had in 2015 arrested 40-year-old Afaq, a homeopathy doctor from Bhatkal, a port town in Uttara Kannada, on the suspicion of being an operative of Indian Mujahideen.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Action will be taken against private hospitals that were violating government norms and charging exorbitant fees charges for the treatment of Covid-19 patients and suspects, said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

The government has taken action against private hospitals in Bengaluru and the same parameters would be adopted other cities, he said speaking to media persons in Belagavi on Friday.

Jarkiholi said that the government had noticed that patients were levied exorbitant charges for Covid-19 treatment. People too have complaints regarding the huge bills by these private hospitals and have demanded action.

“We are not under the obligation of any private hospital and stringent action will be taken against all erring and violating government tariffs. They will have to treat patients and follow the tariffs fixed,” he stated.

Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital had been directed to install CCTV cameras in Covid-19 wards and install monitors at reception to facilitate monitoring of treatment and condition of the wards. BIMS management was taken to task for not following the directive and have been given a deadline to install CCTV cameras, Jarkiholi informed.

New Delhi, Jul 22: Sir Philip Barton visited Bengaluru on Tuesday in the first of the series of virtual regional visits as the UK's new High Commissioner and called Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, business leaders, and startup community to pitch for new momentum in the already strong UK-Karnataka relationship.

During his virtual call, High Commissioner Barton got a 'real' taste of Bengaluru through a traditional Masala Dosa delivered to his residence in Delhi along with authentic south Indian filter coffee, which he relished over a chat with historian and commentator Ramachandra Guha. They discussed the unique UK-India "living bridge" across culture and cuisine, history and heritage, and sports and science.

Both Yeddyurappa and the British envoy restated their commitment to working together on the immediate challenges of Covid-19 and beyond.

Barton subsequently 'traveled' to Electronics City, where he met with a range of key business leaders to discuss deepening the UK-India tech partnership and opportunities for global investors in the UK.

Barton also met with a group of entrepreneurs, business founders and innovators, who were part of the first GoGlobal UK cohort to explore the dynamic UK market considered one of the best ecosystems for startups in the world. 

They had earlier attended a week-long boot-camp in London and Manchester in December 2019 that helped them bolster their business skills, build links with UK's thriving digital sector, and paved the way for future partnerships.

"I am delighted to make my first regional virtual visit to Bengaluru, the technology hub of India. My visit comes at a difficult time for everyone. So it is also a time when the excellent collaboration between the UK and Karnataka across technology and healthcare could not be important," Barton said.

"Making the most of those close links, and drawing on the great energy, innovation and entrepreneurship that Karnataka is famous for, will be central to ensuring we all recover from Covid-19 stronger than ever," he added.

Manglauru, July 30: There will be no congregational prayer on Eid Al-Adha at the historic Eidgah mosque in Mangluru’s lighthouse hill this year due to covid-19 pandemic. 

The decision to suspend the Eid prayers in Eidgah was taken as per the guidelines issued by the State Board of Auqaf, said Haji Y Abdullah Kunhi, president of Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid.

However, Eid prayer will be held at Zeenat Baksh Central Juma Masjid on July 31 at 7 a.m.

Muslims in coastal Karnataka will be celebrating Eid al-Adha on July 31 whereas Muslims in other parts of Karnataka and India are celebrating the festival on August 1.
