Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 6: Union minister Arun Jaitley today met family members of slain RSS functionary Rajesh, a victim of political violence in Kerala, at his house in Sreekaryam near here.

During the visit, Jaitley spoke with the three-year old son of Rajesh and his aged parents.

Jaitley's visit is widely seen as an attempt by the BJP to bring to national focus the issue of alleged increasing attacks on party cadres by the CPI-M.

State BJP leaders, including president Kummanam Rajasekharan, accompanied the Union Finance minister.

They explained to Jaitely the concern expressed by family members, including the widow of 34-year old Rajesh, who was hacked to death on July 29 by a gang led by an alleged history-sheeter here.

The BJP has alleged that CPI-M activists were behind the gruesome murder, a charge denied by the ruling party.

BJP members recently raised the issue of political violence in the state in Parliament alleging that "Kerala has become a killing field."

Earlier, Jaitley arrived here by a special aircraft for an on-the-spot account of the political situation.

He was also likely to submit a report to the Central government, party sources said.

His visit comes in the backdrop of RSS leadership even favoring imposition of President's Rule in the state on the ground that law and order situation had collapsed under the LDF government led by Pinarayi Vijayan.

Jaitley is also slated to visit some of the BJP workers whose houses were attacked allegedly by CPI-M here in recent days.

State Governor P Sathasivam had on July 30 summoned Chief Minister Vijayan and state police chief Loknath Behra to ascertain the action taken in the backdrop of the murder of Rajesh and other violent incidents. They had apprised him of the arrests made in the murder case.

The CPI-M alleged that RSS-BJP was spreading a false propaganda on political violence.

To counter the BJP, the CPI-M today organised a dharna of relatives of 21 party workers allegedly killed by RSS-BJP activists in the district and also demanded Jaitely visit them also.

CPI-M state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan alleged that political violence had increased in the state after the visit of BJP President Amit Shah in early June.

The BJP was implementing "Amit Shah's plan" in the state by allegedly attacking party strongholds, Balakrishnan charged.

Incidentally, the Chief Minister has convened an all- party meeting this evening.
The state had been witnessing a cycle of violence involving BJP-RSS and CPI-M workers with the capital district rocked by incidents of attacks on houses of rival party men.

New Delhi, Apr 11: As India battles the Covid-19 crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a video conference with chief ministers primarily to take their feedback on whether the 21-nation-wide lockdown be extended beyond April 14 to stem the tide of the infections.

The Central government is understood to have also obtained views on the issue from all the relevant agencies and stakeholders involved in the efforts to contain the spread of the pandemic.

The video conference, which began at 11am, comes amidst indications that the central government may extend the nationwide lockdown with some possible relaxations even as Punjab and Odisha have already announced extending the lockdown beyond April 14 when the current spell of 21-day shutdown across the country ends on Tuesday.

The Union Home Ministry has sought views of state governments on various aspects, including whether more categories of people and services need to be exempted. In the current lockdown only essential services are exempted.

This is for the second time the prime minister is interacting with the chief ministers via video link after the lockdown was imposed.

During his April 2 interaction with chief ministers, Modi had pitched for a "staggered" exit from the ongoing lockdown.

A PTI tally of numbers reported by various states as on Thursday at 9.30pm showed a total of 7,510 having been affected by the virus nationwide so far with at least 251 deaths. More than 700 have been cured and discharged. However, the last update from the Union Health Ministry put the number of confirmed infections at 7,447 and the death toll at 239.

Addressing floor leaders of various parties who have representation in Parliament, Modi had on Wednesday made it clear that the lockdown cannot be lifted in one go, asserting that the priority of his government is to "save each and every life".

According to an official statement after the Wednesday interaction, the prime minister told these leaders that states, district administrations and experts have suggested extension of the lockdown to contain the spread of the virus.

Before the lockdown was announced on March 24, the prime minister had interacted with the chief ministers on March 20 to discuss ways and means to check the spread of the novel coronavirus.

New Delhi, Mar 14: A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to three alleged members of the Popular Front of India (PFI) -- Parvez (Delhi President), Iliyas (Delhi Secretary) and Danish -- in connection with the organization's role in the northeast Delhi violence last month.

Metropolitan Magistrate Prabhdeep Kaur granted bail to all three accused on furnishing personal bail bonds of Rs 30,000 each.

The court said that "Investigating Officer (IO) has nowhere mentioned that any of the non-bailable offences has been disclosed or has come out during investigation till now, therefore, accused be enlarged on bail."

According to police, the three men were arrested for allegedly spreading fake propaganda during the anti-CAA protests.

Delhi police, while opposing bail and seeking remand, stated that police custody is required because accused were involved in a conspiracy of communal riots which resulted in the death of 50 innocent people and injuries to approximately 300 persons and huge loss of government and public properties.
