Arvind Kejriwal says 'security of people in Delhi has been left to God'

New Delhi, Jan 16: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said Delhi Police are "highly compromised", and if any crime is prevented in the national capital, it is not because of the police force but rather God's grace.

"The security of the people has been left to God, and whatever little crime incidents are not happening is not because of Delhi Police, but despite them," Kejriwal said after the recent incidents of grave crimes against women, including the rape on Tuesday of a 51-year-old Danish tourist by a gang of vagabonds.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kejriwal said he would meet police commissioner B S Bassi along with lt governor Najeeb Jung to analyze the cause of so many rapes in the capital.

Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday also asked the police to suspend four offices for allegedly refusing to act against sex and drug gangs and in a case of burning of a woman.

"We are demanding... we are warning Delhi Police," Kejriwal told the media, using unusually harsh language for a chief minister.

He demanded the suspension of the station house officers (SHO) of the Sagarpur and Malviya Nagar police stations and two assistant commissioners of police.

The Sagarpur SHO, he said, did not arrest members of a family who allegedly set their daughter-in-law on fire.

Kejriwal accused the SHO of Malviya Nagar of complicity with a bunch of foreigners in south Delhi allegedly involved in prostitution and drugs.

"People are not going to be mute spectators to what is going on," he said.

The chief minister denied the charge that his ministers were interfering in the work of Delhi Police, saying it was the duty of the ministers to speak and act if they witnessed crime.

"Delhi has security not because of Delhi Police," he said, demanding to know why there were so many incidents of rape in the national capital compared to other parts of India.

Mumbai, Jan 30: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Dr Kafeel Khan from Mumbai airport for allegedly making inflammatory statements at AMU during protests against the Citizenship Amendments Act (CAA) last month, officials said.

Khan was arrested on Wednesday night with assistance from Mumbai Police at the airport when he arrived in the city to attend anti-CAA protests, an official said.

"Officials of the UP STF arrested Dr Kafeel Khan in a case which was registered at Civil Lines Police Station under section 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) of IPC. Our police team helped our UP counterparts on their request," said an official from Mumbai Police.

He claimed that Khan had made inflammatory statements on December 12 last year during the protest near Bab e Syed Gate outside the Aligarh Muslim University in front of more than 600 students.

The official also alleged that the Gorakhpur doctor had made objectionable comments against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The FIR against Khan mentions that Swaraj India's president Yogendra Yadav was also present during the speech at AMU.

Following the arrest in the case, Khan was taken to the Sahar Police Station and after completing formalities he will be taken to UP on transit remand, the official said.

Khan, a paediatrician, had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, UP.

New Delhi, Jan 29: The Janata Dal (United) today expelled its vice-president Prashant Kishor and senior leader Pavan Kumar accusing them of "anti-party" activities.

Both the leaders have been attacking the party leadership over its pro-CAA stand.

The spat between Nitish Kumar and Kishor was out in the open yesterday when the former reminded the political strategist that he was inducted into the party on the recommendation of Union home minister Amit Shah.

It all began when Nitish, while talking to the media here, said, “I don’t have any problem if he (Kishor) wants to leave the party. But if he wants to stay, then he will have to follow the basic structure of the party.”

Varma had also questioned the JDU's alliance with the BJP in Delhi Assembly polls while Kishor has more than once voiced his differences with the party known on the issue of CAA and NRC.

New Delhi, Jul 28: India on Wednesday reported 47,704 more COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's count of coronavirus cases to 14,83,157, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Out of the total cases, there are 4,96,988 active cases in the country while the number of patients cured/discharged and migrated stands at 9,52,744.

With 654 deaths due to COVID-19 in the country reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll rises to 33,425.

The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients has increased to 64.23 per cent. The recoveries to deaths ratio is 96.6 per cent:3.4 per cent, informed the Centre.

As per the data provided by the Ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state from the infection with 1,48,905 active cases and 13,656 deaths due to COVID-19. Tamil Nadu has a total of 53,703 active cases and 3,494 deaths.

Delhi has a total of 11,904 active cases and 3,827 deaths.

The Health Ministry further informed that more than 5 lakh COVID-19 tests were conducted in a single day over two consecutive days. On 26th July, India tested a total of 5,15,000 samples and on 27th July, a total of 5,28,000 samples were tested.

The total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to July 27 is 1,73,34,885 including 5,28,082 samples tested yesterday, said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
