June 10, 2017

Bengaluru, Jun 10: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday surprised members cutting across parties in the Legislative Assembly when he displayed his hold over Kannada grammar.

When BJP MLA Y A Naray¬anaswamy complained in the Assembly that Kannada was suffering as a result of the trend of parents admitting their children to private English schools, Siddaramaiah sought to know whether his children studied in a private or government school.

“Do you have children? Where did your children study?...Why do you think only your children should study in convents?” he asked. Members burst into laughter when the BJP MLA mumbled an answer.

When BJP members, including Narayanaswamy, said it was a question of protecting Kannada, the chief minister, who is known for his witty retorts, then sought to know how many of them knew Kannada grammar. “A majority of you don't know Kannada grammar...Do you (Narayanaswamy) know what is a sandi (in Kannada grammar)?” he asked.

Siddaramaiah proved Narayanaswamy wrong when the latter replied saying that are two types of sandis. The chief minister dropped complicated names of all sandis and even explained some of them. “I have studied in a government school. My Kannada teacher taught grammar so well that even today I clearly remember it...But I am aware that the quality of teaching is not up to the mark now,” he stated.

K?S?Puttanaiah (Ind) jocularly said, “You (Siddaramaiah) passed through many sandis (also means passages) to become chief minister.” The chief minister retorted saying, “You too do the same.”

Udupi, Jun 5: Senior BJP leader and Lok Sabha member Shobha Karandlje accused members of Tablighi Jamaat of spreading Coronavirus, particularly in slums, in Bengaluru.

Speaking to newsmen here Friday night, she said that the members had intentionally spread the virus in Siddique Layout and Padarayanapura. Members had hatched a conspiracy to destroy the country. She would raise the issue with the central government.

She said that New Delhi and Maharashtra were responsible for rising Covid-19 cases in the country. Highlighting the programmes, introduced by Modi-led NDA government for the past six years, she blamed Covid-19 for the collapse of the economy. But for Covid-19 Modi government at the Centre would have been a leader in the world,” she added.

She said 13,541 people, stranded in other States and foreign countries, had returned to Udupi. “We have sufficient beds in the district to tackle the situation. But if more people decide to travel to Udupi, arranging quarantine facilities would be a huge challenge,” she added.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday asked Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar to be the government's spokesperson on the Novel Coronavirus crisis management effort, a move that is being seen as keeping too many cooks from spoiling the broth.

At a high-level meeting to review measures on COVID-19 containment, Mr Yediyurappa is said to have taken exception to his Cabinet colleagues making multiple, and often contradictory statements, leading to confusion.

''The CM has directed Mr Kumar to be the only one to brief the media on COVID-19,'' a source from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) confirmed.
