Kasaragod, Oct 2: Days after the burglary attempt at Canara Bank’s ATM counter at Irikkur, unidentified miscreants made yet another abortive bid to loot cash from the bank’s ATM counter at Periye in Kasaragod district in the early hours of Sunday.
Two persons wearing masks and red-coloured overcoats were noticed during the inspection of CCTV footage in the presence of fingerprint experts, dog squad and police personnel, said Bekal Sub-Inspector Police U.T. Vipin, who is heading the probe into the burglary attempt.
Mr. Vipin said the burglary attempt could have taken place between 1 a.m. and 3.30 a.m. as the masked persons were found to have similarities in dress colour and physical appearance to those who had attempted to burgle the ATM counter at Irikkur on September 21.
The ATM was found to have suffered extensive damage as the miscreants in their frantic bid to execute their “job” spoilt several integral circuits of the hi-tech gadget, he said. Looting of cash, if any, could be ascertained only after experts from Mumbai reached here.
It is presumed that the machine at the time of the burglary attempt contained roughly Rs. 13 lakh in cash as the digital verification made it clear that the customers had withdrawn cash of Rs. 7 lakh after the ATM was stocked with Rs. 20 lakh cash a few days ago.
The police have registered cases under the provisions of IPC Section 461 (dishonestly breaking open boxes containing property) and 5-11 of 380 (attempt to commit offences). The robbers chose to break open the ATM ahead of two day bank recess on account of Sunday and Gandhi Jayanti.
