Australia score 123/0 at lunch on Day 1 of final Test

Sydney, Jan 6: Openers Chris Rogers and David Warner struck fluent fifties to help Australia get off to a rollicking start as the hosts reached 123 for no loss at lunch on day one of the fourth and final cricket Test against India at the SCG, in Sydney on Tuesday.

Electing to bat on a good pitch in hot conditions, Rogers (52 not out) and Warner (63 not out) set the tone right from the very start and helped the Steven Smith-led side maintain a healthy scoring rate of 4.39 in the first session of play.

Both the batsmen combined the right dose of caution and aggression to once again make the Indian pace attack look ordinary.

New-ball bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0-30) and Umesh Yadav (0-42) got the stick in the initial overs and Mohammed Shami’s introduction also did not help matters for the Virat Kohli-led side.

Shami (0-31) though was unlucky in his second over when the medium-pacer got Rogers to edge the ball to Lokesh Rahul at second slip and the youngster spilled the chance. Rogers was on 19.

The left-handed batsman made full use of the life to notch his 10th Test fifty and his fifth in this series.

But Warner it was who led the charge as the left-handed batsman scored at a strike rate of 85.13. The entertaining batsman got his 14th Test fifty in the 19th over of the innings.

The introduction of spin in the 14th over did help India check the scoring rate a bit as Ravichandran Ashwin (0-17) bowled well but Rogers and Warner stuck to their guns.

At the end of the session, if Australia were left smiling then Kohli, standing in his first game as regular captain, after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s retirement, got a little taste of leading the Indian side.

Northamptonshire, Jul 31: Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez has tested positive for coronavirus, and as a result, he will miss the British Grand Prix.

The Racing Point driver was absent from the circuit on Thursday after self-isolating following what his team called an "inconclusive" test. Perez then re-tested later in the day and it returned positive.

Formula 1 is following a strict testing regime as part of the safety protocols put in place when racing resumed earlier this month, and this is the first time a driver has tested positive.

"Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities," Formula 1 and the FIA said in a statement.

"With the assistance of the local organiser of the British Grand Prix, local health authorities and the FIA COVID-19 delegate, a full track and trace initiative has been undertaken and all close contacts have been quarantined," the statement added.

Dubai, Jan 15: India skipper and batting mainstay Virat Kohli was on Wednesday named captain of the International Cricket Council's ODI and Test teams of the year, capping off a memorable season for the world No.1.

Apart from Kohli, there were four other Indians who were picked in the ICC's Test and ODI Teams of the Year.

While the Test team featured double-centurion Mayank Agarwal, opener Rohit Sharma, speedster Mohammed Shami and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav found a place in the ODI side.

Kohli enjoyed a tremendous run in both the formats in 2019. The 31-year-old hit his seventh Test double hundred on the way to a career-best unbeaten 254 against South Africa in October last year.

It was a breakthrough year for opener Agarwal, who smashed two double tons, one century and went beyond the fifty-run mark twice. He hit a career-best score of 243 against Bangladesh in November.

Kuldeep, too, enjoyed a memorable year as he joined the golden list of bowlers with two hat-tricks. The chinaman claimed his second ODI hat-trick of his career against the West Indies last month.

In the absence of Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Shami rose to the occasion making the best in the business hop, skip and jump with his pace, swing and bounce through the season. He scalped 42 wickets in 21 ODIs over the last 12 months.

Aukland, Feb 5: Striker Navneet Kaur scored a brace to guide the Indian women's hockey team to a convincing 3-0 win over New Zealand in the last game of its five-match tour here on Wednesday.

Navneet found the net in the 45th and 58th minutes, while Sharmila scored a field goal in the 54th minute as India drew curtains on the New Zealand tour on a bright note.

After a goalless opening two quarters, Navneet finally broke the deadlock for India in the 45th minute.

Sharmila then doubled the lead when she struck a powerful shot past the New Zealand goalkeeper in the 54th minute. Navneet found the net again just two minutes from the final hooter with a beautiful field strike.

India began the tour by thrashing New Zealand Development squad 4-0 before suffering close 1-2 and 0-1 defeats to the home senior team.

In penultimate game of the tour, skipper Rani's lone strike handed India a 1-0 win over Great Britain.

"...I am happy we produced three goals against New Zealand in the last match. This tour gave us a good insight about where we need to improve and one of the things is to create faster play than we do now," said India's chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne.

Commenting on his side's performance during the tour, Marijne said, "Sometimes we tend to keep the ball too long on the stick and then we create pressure. We need to avoid that by passing faster.

"On the defence side, we need to be a bit more calmer and need to improve our tackling. We will have a four week camp after a short break when we return home and we will be working on these points."

The Indian team will return home on February 7.
