Australia won the series, India won respect

Austrial wins

Jan 11: They huffed, they puffed, they tried all they knew. They created enough genuine chances – and some half-chances, some quarter-, some one-eighth-, some mirages for crazed optimists – but the Australian bowling attack was eventually held at bay by a worthy opponent. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood bowled well enough to fill local hearts with hope for years to come, but fulfilment will have to wait for another day. Through skill, application and the character they have shown throughout, India's batsmen saved a draw that reflected the balance between the teams. Australia won the series, India won respect.

Before taking the field and during their breaks, the Australians were doubtless talking about "creating chances". It's the kind of process-based talk that dominates sport. Rather than focus on winning, football teams talk about their structures, golfers talk about birdie chances (instead of actual birdies), swimmers talk about maintaining form. To concentrate on the end result is seen, with some justification, as placing too much of the wrong kind of pressure on the participant.

What it also does is introduce a kind of fatalism into the game, as if the creation of a certain number of chances will inevitably lead to conversion. But there is no such law. Adam Scott creates as many chances as Jack Nicklaus ever did, perhaps more. But Nicklaus did not concentrate his efforts on getting the ball on the green and letting probabilities take over; he focused on the numbers he needed to beat the other guy.

On day five, the Australian cricketers did create their chances; but they had done this in the first innings here, and in Melbourne too, while lacking the polish to convert them. Staunch batting from India also played a part. When creating chances does not lead to wickets, confidence begins to waver. The belief in that mystical equation – X chances equal Y wickets – is shaken.

By my count, Australia created seven chances of varying feasibility before the tea break on Saturday, of which they converted two. It took 10 overs for the first, when Murali Vijay outside-edged Nathan Lyon over a leaping Shane Watson, via Brad Haddin's thigh. Three overs later, K.L. Rahul advanced to smother Lyon and gloved a catch down the leg-side.

For the best part of two hours, as Vijay and Rohit Sharma dug in, only one more near-chance materialised, Sharma's glove bobbing a ball from Lyon wide of a wrong-footed Joe Burns at bat-pad. While no wickets came, this period produced some of the best cricket of the series. Hazlewood gave up a solitary single in his first five-over spell. Ryan Harris and Starc were similarly accurate, and Lyon teased. The Australian close fieldsmen kept up a steady flow of conversation with the batsmen, leading to the intervention of umpires whose faces could not have looked more helpless if they were the ones being gossiped about.

After 35 overs of Waiting for Watto, the all-rounder came on from the Randwick end and, as so often, brought about the subtle but telling change in the mood of the game. Shane Watson immediately induced false strokes from Sharma, and in the next over, Harris broke Vijay's concentration, a loose drive flying to Shaun Marsh at short cover. Marsh put down the chance, tough but graspable. Was it going to be that sort of day again, when faith in the creative process would only go part of the way to the desired output?

Next over, the Australian captain took the matter into his own hand. Watson got a ball to jump at Sharma, whose intention to guide the ball stylishly to the third man boundary became a horror-stricken edge into a gap closed by the acrobatic Steve Smith. Spidercam hovered at a safe distance as Smith provided the inspiring moment, the difference between chance and dismissal.

Virat Kohli and Vijay then batted from the 39th over to the 61st. They fought to reintroduce another idea of inevitability: the supremacy of bat over ball. No chances came from them, save for one edge from Kohli off Watson that not even Smith's telescoping right arm could reach, and an lbw appeal against Vijay to which Richard Kettleborough gave a rare poor decision.

But when the chances did come after tea, they cascaded. Seven in two sessions became nine in an hour. More importantly for Australia, the conversion rate followed the US dollar. After accelerating from 50 to 80, Vijay, perhaps entertaining his first thought of going for the win, edged Hazlewood. In the next ten minutes, the previously flawless Kohli popped a near-caught and bowled to Lyon, skewed a drive past gully, and finally edged Starc to be sharply caught by Watson at first slip. The hegemony of the bat left the field with the Indian master, and now, not only did chances come, they came with thud after thud like a monster down a staircase: Starc into Suresh Raina's pads, Lyon into Wriddhiman Saha's, Hazlewood into Ravi Ashwin's. Getting behind the line, for the Indian batsmen, now seemed not safe technique but the riskiest.

In the end, fine Indian batting had the last word, a fitting coda to a series flooded with run-scoring. This has been a summer for talented batsmen to fill their resumes with real, meaty scores. Bowlers have had to survive on the thinner stuff of chance and hope.

Madrid, Feb 23: Lionel Messi scored four goals and Barcelona reclaimed the top spot in the La Liga as Real Madrid suffered a surprise defeat by Levante last night, a week before the Clasico.

Madrid's nightmare afternoon was made worse by another injury to Eden Hazard, who was forced off in the second half of their 1-0 defeat in Valencia and is now doubtful to face Manchester City on Wednesday in the Champions League.

"It doesn't look good," said Real coach Zinedine Zidane afterwards.

Messi, meanwhile, ridiculed talk of a goal drought by scoring four against Eibar after four games without one, while emergency signing Martin Braithwaite made two assists off the bench, teeing up Messi and then Arthur Melo in injury-time.

Their 5-0 rout, coupled with Madrid's defeat, means Barca move back to the summit of La Liga, two points ahead of Zidane's side ahead of next Saturday's showdown at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It amounts to a considerable shift in momentum, with Barcelona away at Napoli in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

Madrid host City a day later and the plan had been for Hazard to regain form and fitness in what was only his second start since returning from three months out with a broken right foot.

But the Belgian sat in the dug-out with an ice pack around the same foot after going off and Zidane suggested it was a repeat injury after the match. "It can be weak where you've had an injury," he said.

For Madrid, playing catch-up again next weekend will be a particularly heavy psychological blow, especially given the series of off-field problems engulfing Barcelona in recent weeks.

Yet on the pitch, Messi showed no sign of distraction as the 32-year-old completed the second fastest of his now 36 league hat-tricks, after less than 40 minutes at Camp Nou.

"There's nothing left to do but stand up and applaud," Eibar wrote on Twitter afterwards.

"I won't wash my kit after hugging Messi," said Braithwaite.

Braithwaite's arrival from Leganes drew criticism after Barcelona capitalised on a curious La Liga rule that allows clubs to sign outside of the transfer window if they have lost a player to serious injury.

Brilliant Messi

Messi quickly got to work, scoring a brilliant first goal in the 14th minute after collecting the ball centrally, around 30 yards out. He had three Eibar defenders in front of him but found a way through, nutmegging Anaitz Arbilla before chipping delicately into the corner.

The second came in the 37th minute as Sergio Busquets found Arturo Vidal, who feathered a flick into Messi's path. Messi surged forward, past his stumbling opponents, and fired in.

His third, three minutes later, was the simplest of the trio and arrived only after he tried to play in Antoine Griezmann. His generosity was rewarded as a sloppy Griezmann touch meant the ball cannoned back to Messi, who apologetically poked in.

Coach Quique Setien was able to take Griezmann off with 18 minutes left and introduce Braithwaite for his debut. Braithwaite's first contribution was a skewed cross but things improved immeasurably from there, as two passes across goal gave Messi his fourth and Arthur his first.

Madrid were never in control of a chaotic contest against Levante but might have taken the lead if Hazard had done better with a long ball over the top from Marcelo, which he failed to control and then scuffed into the hands of Aitor Fernandez.

He limped off and Madrid lost their way, finally punished with 11 minutes left by a straight ball through to Morales. Luka Modric, exposed on the right side of Madrid's defence, was unable to recover and Morales caught Courtois by surprise by firing early past the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Belgrade, June 23: Novak Djokovic tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday after taking part in a tennis exhibition series he organized in Serbia and Croatia.

The top-ranked Serb is the fourth player to test positive for the virus after first playing in Belgrade and then again last weekend in Zadar, Croatia.

His wife also tested positive. “The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested. My result is positive, just as Jelena's, while the results of our children are negative," Djokovic said in a statement.

Djokovic has been criticized for organizing the tournament and bringing in players from other countries amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Viktor Troicki said Tuesday that he and his pregnant wife have both been diagnosed with the virus, while Grigor Dimitrov, a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist from Bulgaria, said Sunday he tested positive.

Borna Coric played Dimitrov on Saturday in Zadar and said Monday he has also tested positive. There were no social distancing measures observed at the matches in either country and Djokovic and other players were seen hugging each other and partying in night clubs and restaurants after the matches.

“Everything we did in the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions,” Djokovic said.

“Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region.” Djokovic, who has previously said he was against taking a vaccine for the virus even if it became mandatory to travel, was the face behind the Adria Tour, a series of exhibition events that started in the Serbian capital and then moved to Zadar.

He left Croatia after the final was canceled and was tested in Belgrade. The statement said Djokovic was showing no symptoms.

Despite the positive test, Djokovic defended the exhibition series. “It was all born with a philanthropic idea, to direct all raised funds towards people in need and it warmed my heart to see how everybody strongly responded to this,” Djokovic said.

"We organized the tournament at the moment when the virus has weakened, believing that the conditions for hosting the Tour had been met. “Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and it is a new reality that we are still learning to cope and live with.”

Djokovic said he will remain in self-isolation for 14 days and also apologized to anyone who became infected as a result of the series. Organizers of the Adria Tour said the third stage of the event, scheduled to held next week in Bosnia, has been cancelled.

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.
